Favorite Monster/Weird Family?

So, I just got done watching some Addams Family re-runs (yay DVDs) and then I saw the Munster Family on TV Land (I think). I have to say, the Munster Family pales in comparison to the Addams Family. The Munster is just a rip off of the Addams Family with no character that are even remotely likeable. The Addams Family is just awesome, espically Morticia and Gomez Addams. Addams Family FTW!

Ditto!
I love Uncles Fester and It.

The Addams family had a much more original internal consistency that created a more immersive feel. The Munsters felt more like a bunch of generic horror movie icons jammed into the setting of 'Father Knows Best.'

The best thing about the (first 2) Addams Family movies was that they preserved the feel of the original series.

Well The Munsters was essentially a remake of the Addams Family, so what would you expect? Personally I like them both.

Why would anyone re-make the Addams Family though? The Addams Family is awesome, the Munster is like something in the Addam's Family toilet after Mexican Night.

Considering that both shows came out at the same time and aired for the same two years, it's hardly fair to call The Munsters a 'remake' of The Addams Family. In fact, during the two shows initial run, The Munsters had a larger Nielson share, so if we're to accuse one of following the other...

They both are, more or less, the product of cartoonists. The Addams Family coming from single panel New Yorker cartoons dating from the 30s and The Munsters from an idea by Bob Clampett to do a cartoon about traditional monsters living in suburbia in the 40s (during the rise of the suburb). While in tone and theme they are similar and thus open to comparison, they are distinct and different shows and to call one a 'rip off' of the other is reductive.

That being said, I prefer The Addams Family for its Marx Brothers' style humor (benefiting from Marx Brothers writer Nat Perrin) and subtler, more intricate subversiveness to the premise.

And while I knew most of what I based my objection on, I'm not some roving 60s macabre tv sitcom expert, I look up the details.

If you think about it, the Addamses are upper class strata while the Munsters are basically working-class stiffs for the most part.

The Munsters tried to imitate the Addams Family and they just couldn't pull it off. Sticking a bunch of movie monsters into a family and having them pretend to be normal people was really weak.

Once again for the non-readers: Both shows came out at the same time, and The Munsters had better ratings. Your order of discovery =/= the actual order of creation.

I feel the need to jump back into the discussion and admit to my mistake, I honestly thought that the Addams Family came first (I do also feel I should point out that its not because I 'discovered' them first, the opposite is actually true)

And let's hope everyone has NBC gear when Grandpa and Grandmama wage alchemical warfare.

I liked 'em both.

There was something funny about Fred Gwynn's nasally voice coming out of a 7ft tall monster.

I also liked the character Gomez.

They were both entertaining.

I don't believe that the Munsters were a rip-off of the Addams Family; it's like comparing the Three Stooges to Bob Newhart. The Addams Family was subtle, sarcastic and cerebral. The Munsters were slapstick.

The Munsters were lighter in tone while Addams were more darker (between the two)

I prefer Addams but I prefer the comic version than the TV show.

No no no, that's not the way of things these days. You have to chose and rate, one has to be better than the other and then you have to deride the loser. No finding value in different things, everything must be rated and sorted and all comparisons must be all or nothing, black and white. Where have you been? Appreciating things for what they are? What kind of monster are you?

We ARE terribly divided then. I guess I'm in a blue state- oh no-a red state.

If we arent at each other's throats, something must be wrong.

I'm liberal, but in the true sense of the word. Not its modern bastardization.
