Well, it is official. After thirteen years at the top, Bill Gates has been dethroned as the world's richest man - in fact, he is now third, behind Buffett and Mexican Carlos Slim.
Personally, I believe that Warren Buffett deserves the honour. He has certainly worked hard to make his money work hard for him and the investors of Berkshire Hathaway.
Oh, and before you accuse me of making it up, here is the article

Gotta hand it to Carlos for having the best name. "Warren Buffet" just wouldn't work as a Bond villain. Carlos Slim, on the other hand... :p

Where'd he make his money?
Apart from just telling you to look up wiki, here's what I'll give you.
He's Mexican, he got into telecommunications when he finished his education. His family was fairly middle class, he's the youngest. He made shit loads of money running Mexico's telco and even more during the various privatisation deals done in Latin America over the past decade or so. Whether that makes him a shady character in your eyes, I don't know. What's clear is that he knows his industry and he has always known who to talk to.
As for Buffett, the man is a genius by virtue of keeping it simple.
