Everyone loves NSG, and everyone loves science. Ergo, everyone is bound to love...NSGOLOGY! (As you know, putting "-ology" on the end of words makes the new word science.)

Nsgology is the study of how threads begin, develop, and die on NSG. It explains the waves of similarly themed threads, or the devolution of threads into pointless drivel.

Does anyone have any over arching theories that can explain the various phenomena?

we seem to have periodic waves of new people showing up, in addition to the stead trickle in and out. not sure what the cause is of that - something to do with school schedules maybe? we also get invasive species from time to time, with colonization events from other forums sparked off by contact of some sort. luckily, most of the most noxious invasives have only a short term fitness advantage.

If it is a hypothetical that no one can possibly answer, it will provoke fierce debate with everyone involved thinking that they alone know what really would have happened. If the hypothetical involves any kind of military, this counts double.

If libertarians are involved, you can expect threads to escalate even more horribly than when a whole busload of born again critters are loudly hailing Jesus as a substitute for using actual arguments in a discussion.

Also keep in mind that trolls are inevitable on this forum. They are like a morbidly obese, cellar-dwelling force of nature.

1. Pies will be mentioned (okay, maybe this is more wishful thinking than fact, but it should be in the NSG constitution somewhere).

2. If accompanied by a poll, there will be a joke option. 90% chance that option will not be funny.

3. Any argument between two members that exceeds two pages will eventually dissolve into snarky commentary on incorrect spelling/grammar/diction.

4. LG/Straughn/Jhahannam/Katganistan/etc. will make timely use of sarcasm and/or silliness and save the rest of us from tearing our hair out in frustration at how dumb (insert name here)'s arguments are.

I find that somebody, generally but not always a supporter of some silly monotheistic religion, will inevitably misuse the word 'theory' as if to discredit things like The Big Bang Theory.

This same misuse also causes my blood pressure to soar, but that's another story.

Inevitably, there will be two threads on any 'significant' topic on the front page. This can range from Israel attacking Hamas again, something the USA did to some other country, or something the USA did to itself.

Nsgology is the study of how threads begin

Out of single person boredom.

, develop,

Out of collective boredom.

and die on NSG

Out of... well... boredom.

It explains the waves of similarly themed threads

Hmmm, can't blame boredom for that, maybe plain stupidity?

, or the devolution of threads into pointless drivel.
Definitely stupid boredom! :p

Alot do turn into drivel, that's because the Internet in general is more a valve to let off steam or to distract the mind from other things.
Alot of these threads repeat because information will pass quicker in some parts of the world, and news sites such as the BBC or CNN, also have a tendancy to talk about elections over and over this is reflected in NSG where i guess about 3 threads on US elections are made every day.

Also because no-one knows what other people know about here, so only general conversation about politics or big events in the past will gain enough people to read them, as they are what all people will recognise.

So i predict that this will continue, and as such will make as many humerous comments as possible, with occaisional questions on things i do not know.

There was a lull after he left when it rose to 20 pages - it's not a constant factor. Still, back in the day it was constant enough for this to be created:

Hear ye, hear ye, the word of the LORD.

If thou findest a thread that hath pass'd a score pages, then ye shall pass by the first and not stop 'till ye haveth reached the last. Verily, I say unto thee, thou shalt find it Spammed, and the Spam shall be good. Do not post, lest ye forfeit what sanity ye may retain.

Assuredly, such a post will add to the glory of thine bountiful Postcount, but beware as ye may feel the Wrath of the LORD and suffer upon thine head the anger and righteous indignation of a thousand primate-clad Spammers armed with plugs of Cotton.

Such is the will and the word of the LORD.

A thread is a hypothesis.

If I follow this ideology, then you will disagree.

This is the ideal gas law, no? That would apply to NSG, where people give off a lot of hot air, i.e., gas.

Here's another law I think works with NSG:
F=GMm/r^2.

In this instance, F is the "force" of the thread, which one can take to me its excellence, longevity, or something similar. G is the Generalite constant. M is the total mass of the users on one side of the discussion, m is the mass of those arguing the opposite. The constant "r" measures how much the subject of the thread actually affects the posters.

In my branch of the study of Nsgology, that of dynamic negatives, I have found the following:

If something cogent, relevant, witty and siggable is said it gets ignored.
If something stupid, irrelevant, and totally without redeeming qualities is said everyone leaps on it and yells.

I note that this observation is universally applicable.
