*Edit: legit news source: http://www.wbay.com/global/story.asp?s=7963395

Since I know there's a population of gamer-geeks on this board, I figured I pass on the news.

For those of you who don't know, Gary Gygax was the creator of Dungeons and Dragons.

I haven't played DnD in ages or gamed in general for almost a year now, but I'm still a fan. This sucks.

No Google links to any recent announcements of any kind for GG come up, but it isn't as though he was a national figure to anyone pretty or mainstream enough to work for a TV news agency.

Yeah, that's why I went ahead and took the risk in posting it here with source I had. I'm not afraid to bite the bullet if it turns out to be false.

Well goody for you. Now how about a little respect for the possibly dead?

Aw, skip it. Carp away -- the socially maladroit shouldn't have to consider their words just because it might be a solemn occasion.

You are being rude just for nothing. I'd suggest you tone down a bit. He said he respected the guy but had his criticism.

I invented a system too, and modified several that some people prefer to play instead of the original ones. I haven't published them because my line of work has proven satisfactory and I do not need or want to get money out of my hobby for now.

His criticism was what was being rude for no reason. "Oh, it's a thread about D&D, I better tell the forum that the system is crappy!" Never mind that the thread isn't about the system. Parkus is another of a long line of gifted and talented students who have gifts and talents everywhere except in actually knowing when and how to speak or how to address the topic at hand. As for Gygax, I re-iterate: He pioneered an immensely enjoyable pastime, for which I am indebted to him. However, I do not enjoy his system in comparison to later ones. But I do not hate him for. It was the first system. The Wright Brothers' plane does not hold candle to modern ones.

It's rude at best and a threadjack to boot.

If you want to keep your conversation private send him a telegram, sensitive. That way you won't be bothered by people "butting in". If you don't like comments to the thread, then ask the moderators to close it after you have written and read what you liked. Grow some skin, bullyboy.

His criticism wasn't excessively rude. He said "I respect him as a RPG pioneer, but there are better systems".

You are a worst student in the same school as Parkus, as far as I can see in your posts.

What is the point? Voicing yourself. He didn't said "I'm glad he is dead", or "His work sucked big time, I can't see why are you mourning". If you are hurt by what he wrote, then mature a little, extrageek.

It is not rude, and is not a threadjack. Gary Gygax is being commented here because he made D&D, commenting D&D is a natural reaction. Without D&D Gygax would be just another unnamed John Doe with a weird name.

Well, nuts. If it's true, then it is a sad day.

The only thing I dread is when it DOES become reported by mainstream media outlets, 'cause we all know what they'll do. They'll pick the geekiest gamers they can find -- the kind who dress the parts they play either while gaming or while walking to Target for more caffeinated beverages -- and interview them. They'll cover a somber story while backgrounding it with mockery.

Yeah, gaming jocks such a yourself never get enough attention, right?

I could send you the rules. My greatest one is the "Miracle" system. It just uses percentage dice. There are ten possible results on a roll; rolls away from the medium (Mediocre and Disappointing) get progressively fewer percentage points and become less likely.

What do you play, too?

I placed a link to one game I play just a bit up. I also do a bit of GURPS, though that has some problems with it too.

How is that the game's fault? Clearly he was in desperate need of some kind of mental health intervention -- any outlet could have given that behavior an avenue. Be glad it was D&D and not, say, Gamma World or Top Secret, where guns are part of the milieu.
It was the game's fault because the game made him that way. Obviously. Don't you pay attention to these kinds of things?

No, it didn't. He was clearly channeling the daemons from the game when he tried to set me on fire. He was chanting all sorts of odd things, like "You rolled a one on your saving roll!"

Psst. I'm being sarcastic. I'm trying to parody a religious fundamentalist.

Oh, ffs, I had to deal with this kind of religious horseshit when I played in school. The kids who flipped were going to flip no matter what. Gygax's invention didn't create or release any demons. Only people can do that.

Well done. You had me for a second. Perfect tone and everything. Mention witches, and you'll really get it going.

Everyone I admire has died hundreds of years ago, and I do not complain if they are spoken "dismissively" of.

A fellow fencer said some nasty things about Cesare Borgia, but I did not blow the trumpet and send in the verbal cavalry.

Again, fair enough. Realize, however, that most people don't appreciate such intentional tweaking of their traditional sense of propriety. I suppose that if you're picking your battles, an online forum isn't the worst place to be deliberately contrarian. I hope you're not like that in public, or if you are, you spend most of your time hanging around those who appreciate your dry wit and abrasive intellectualism.

No. It created a place for social outcasts to be cast out too. And unless he lit you on fire with sulpher and bat guano, it wasn't the game that did it.

I had my disagreements with the system he devised and modified, but they were with specific points not with the base system. ( though honestly it's been coons ages since I played an unmodified by some one AD&D game much less the original system ( yea gads can I say 1975 ish? )

I read about it in the paper this morning (featured obituary).

I'm a huge gamer, and I am indebted to Gary Gygax for what he has created. I may even owe him a friendship - I met my best friend at a D&D game. Our first interactions involved me helping her with her character and chemistry homework. Yeah, I would probably have met her elsewhere, but we might not have bonded so quickly.

I hereby dedicate the crit I got on Monday to him.

I actually got the news while I was DM'ing. It was at a baseball card shop in LA (the owner is in my group), and one of the regulars there came in and asked if we'd heard the news.

I didn't realize he was as old as he was, but in hindsight it's no surprise, considering how long D&D has been around.

The surprising thing to me was that the next day, his passing was noted on the Jim Rome sports talk show!

Rest in peace.

God does not play dice with the universe: He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players , to being involved in an obscure and complex variant of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who *[I]smiles all the time*.
