I'm currently watching an anime series called Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl). The premise is fairly simple, if you want revenge on someone, simply call up this website at midnight, enter the name of the person you want gone, and they will be ferried straightforward into Hell (Japanese Hell, BTW, it's much more interesting). The cost of course is your own soul. You'll be able to live your life free from whomever it was you wanted revenge on, but when you die, your soul too will fall into Hell.

Question for you all, let's say the site is real, and let's say there's no price to pay for the service, just having to live with yourself.

Could you condemn someone to Hell? Eternal torment and pain?

Remember, the site only works when you have need for revenge...

First impulse, fuck yeah. On reflection, probably not.

Probably not. Revenge by proxy is never as satisfying as personally delivered revenge. But then the cost of doing so is usually feeling rather empty after expending all that effort.

Doesn't sound very interesting. Unlike on that show(probably), you don't get to see what happens to the jerk you send to hell. Nobody else knows he went to hell. Those would probably be the two best things about sending someone to hell and they don't exist.

So what we really need is video cameras in hell. We can probably get Roman Polanski to direct. :)

I wouldn't because the site would be in Japanese and it sounds like a stupid myth

plus Japanese hell sounds like being the only person sober in a Karaoke bar :p

I have no problem with telling someone to go to hell, but I wouldn't send someone to hell.

"Do you know why revenge murder leaves an empty feeling after it?

Because you feel like your target escaped. You can't inflict more pain on them after they die. That is why you feel empty. The only thing I want now is to be able to follow him to the afterlife and keep hitting him over and over. I felt empty the moment he died because I knew he wasn't feeling pain any more. I wanted to inflict more pain, more grief. Killing him wasn't enough. Do you really think I repent for what I did?"

(That is my paraphrasis, as I remember it, of a response I got in an interview early in my career, several years ago, from a woman who killed her own older brother after he raped to death both her son and daughter. Go and figure it out if she would send him to hell. Killing him with a hammer and burning his corpse wasn't enough. She wanted his eternal pain as a reward. However, I think she would happily say to your hypothetical webmaster to send her to hell with her brother right away, so she can punish him there personally. As a side note, she committed suicide several weeks afterwards. To try to follow him? Go and guess).

Only in a metaphorical, colloquial sense... casual usage. Non-literal... as in, "oh go to hell".

Most of the people that I know of who deserve Hell, are in some sense, already there. My ex-husband has become a reclusive racist whose children and current wife avoid him at all possible costs. My ex-boss has discovered that no one wants to work for her and that she can't replace the people who've quit or retired on her because the word has gone out (oh and her husband has left her and her foster son/nephew stole her identity and put sugar in her Lexus' gas tank). So, really, there would be no point in me doing anything. Gotta love Karma.

Is there any conceivable situation that you don't have an image or smilie prepared for? ;)
