Inducing a Trance

When you listen to a radio show like Coast to Coast AM for several years, you get to hear many strange things, and I've always heard about psychic, witches, mediums etc. going into Trances. I have alwas wanted to try this myself, but I dunno, in the past I wonder if I really was in a Trance or if I just have an overactive imagination. Now I don't want to hear from the "Trance is not real, it's all in your head" crowd, thank you for your imput but it's not wanted. Has anyone in here ever induced a trance, and if so how did you do it?

Oh it's real alright, and it's a gateway for demons.

And Marijuana makes you grow hair on your palms and rape women.

It's possible. You've never zoned out and blanked everything out including whatever was going on around you? It's all the same. Google "self-hypnosis."

Yea....the more I meditate and ponder my own Spirituality, I actually decided to reject the boogyman that are "demons" and "Devil". Sorry, but I won't be bullied into a religion, faith, or belief system.

Next.

What I have done is laid on my back on my bed in complete darkness, turn off my hearing aid, and do square breathing until it feels like I fall asleep, except I don't and I'm aware of everything that's happening around me.

I don't know if that's actually a trance or not.

either sensory deprivation or over-stimulation. your ordinary state of consciousness is mostly maintained by your ordinary I/O-levels.

Meh, po-tay-to, po-tah-to. If it's for spiritual healing and growth it's called self-hypnosis. If it's in boredom it's called spacing out. Hyper-religious folk call it a trance when speakin' o' the wicked. :)

No, but I've heard this guy speak:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mihaly_Csikszentmihalyi

His study of 'flow' seems to be close to the study of 'trance,' provided you're talking about a working trance rather than catatonia.

Getting into a creative "zone" from total concentration while playing music sometimes makes me feel one with the universe and unaware of my own existence all the while playing some real kickass lines; then I accidentally drool on myself or my instrument and I snap out of it.

Holy crap he even mentions jazz to illustrate his point.

Well it's all in your head, that doesn't make it fake. Try drugs.

I heard about an African tribe that would dance until their brain ran out of oxygen and then they would have dreams, which they thought were visions of the place where the gods lived.

I thought you die if your brain runs out of oxygen?

ran low on oxygen? The experiance of dancing into a trance was similar to those who had a near death experiance and also similar to astronauts who were spun around on training apparatus until they passed out.

so would i be able to replicate that by spinning around and around over and over? (not that i would)

You would share that viewpoint with Saint Augustine, who argued, based upon biblical accounts of Satan, that satan does not so much exist as a seperate entity as he does exist as the manifestation of all of our non-holy desires, fears, et cetera. Basically, Satan is nothing but what is worse and non-godly about us. Based upon this logic, Los Angeles and Consumerism would be far better gateways for demons then any trance or "witchcraft."

I guess what I'm trying to say is, you don't have to believe in that baloney to be a Christian, unless of course you want to argue that one of the greatest saints of the Catholic Church was not. I would love to see you try, if only out of curiosity.

I agree with St. Augustine on that point then.

I believe St. Augustine was a Christian and a devout Catholic. However, I also believe that the Christian Faith today (Catholicism included) do try to use the Devil and Demons to get people to join their church and to stay in their church. I mean what better way to motivate someone than fear?

It kind of is, actually.

Trances can be useful for meditating and for introspection. Some use it to practice creative visualization although from what I've read the lines between that and certain practices in witchcraft are blurry. Maybe it's just that witchcraft used perfectly 'mundane' trances. Not being a practitioner, I defer to anyone who knows better.

I personally find trances useful for just meditating, like I said. It can be very relaxing and restful, although if you're not getting enough quality sleep an effort to induce a trance can instead make you just fall asleep. ;)

I've heard this is a way of enabling things like out of body travel or planar travel and such. I don't know if those phenomena are true but if you were going to explore them..
