How many glasses a day?

Wilgrove

So, I've started drinking four glasses of water a day, apparently my urologist was concern about the state of my urine and wanted me to drink more water. So I am now drinking four glasses of water a day. So far it's going really well, I don't like the taste of the water out of the fridge, but whatever.

So how many glasses of water a day do you people drink?

More than four probably. However, I don't exactly fill my glasses to the brim, so it's hard to tell.

Hard to say, I keep a sport bottle-type-thingy filled with water in the fridge so I always have cold water on hand. Though it's probably in the neighborhood of as little as 2 glasses to as many as 6.

Well, you should heed your urologists' advice on this one, since, speaking from personal experience, you really don't want to attempt shooting a few stones out the ol' tubes. $16 grand and some funny torture stories later .... and the advice of displacing 2 gallons of water a day.

Apparently 2L (8 glasses) per day is good to remain hydrated but it really depends on how much liquids you lose during the day someone who exerts a lot energy and will be sweating a lot may need more someone who sits on the computer reading NSG all day may need less.

Basically one thing doctors say to check on how well you maintain hydrated, the way to check this is look at your pee when you go to the toilet (or wherever you go), if it is clear then you are fully hydrated, if it is a dark yellow then you are severely dehydrated basically the clearer it is the more hydrated you are.

I have a graph somewhere on my work email account that was distributed by the doctors from the medical centre and is plastered on the toilets if I find it I will post it

You need to take in roughly the equivalent of 8 glasses of water each day, but that need not be in "pure"-form. For one thing, unless you eat a diet consisting exclusively of cured meats and dry oatmeal, your body can extract a decent amount of fluid just from your food.
Also, water with other stuff in it (ie, soft drinks) hydrates you, though caffeinated beverages also dehydrate you. So that works out some how.

I drink 8 or 9 glasses of water/day. I don't think that much is "necessary" per se, but it helps me avoid munching on junk.

The pee-color rule of thumb someone mentioned seems to work for determining what's really needed.

I don't like the taste of the water out of the fridge,The cheapest solution for that is to run it from the tap and then put it in the fridge to cool in an airtight, tasteless/scentless container. That way it can't collect any nasty flavors/odors during cooling.

Apparently, according to the link provided by the always serious Fiddles, this is not true. We retain 2/3s of coffee and tea and, for those who drink it regularly, even more.

It does seem as though alcohol causes a net loss but you need to drink more than, at least, 1 glass.

As others have said, we take in water in a variety of ways so to specifically drink 7-8 glasses a day isn't necessary.

Having said that, even though it's not necessary, I find drinking plenty of water is overall good for me - no medical evidence but I simply feel better.

So, in answer, about a litre a day, I sometimes add a touch of Ribena, especially to my bedside glass but I actually enjoy cold water alone.

Roughly 3 quarts of water a day, varies though. Get a water filter, city water around here smells like bleach from all the chlorine, filter gets rid of it and makes it taste better.

I drink a heck of a lot as well, but here in HK I would guess we tend to lose more water than elsewhere, due to the heat and humidity. First year here, I'd look like someone had chucked a bucket of water at me I was sweating so much. It was awfully unpleasant.
I drink a fair bit. I can easily lose 2-3 pounds in an hour exercising, most of which would just be water loss. If I don't drink enough I get splitting headaches (such as the one I had today cause I only had 3 glasses of water + 1 cup of coffee up until 5pm).
rough guess, I'd say I drink around 3l.

i don't use glasses, except to see across the street with. i drink out of what i call cups. some people call them mugs. the kind of cups that hold a full cup or more and stand on their own without a saucer.

as for water consumption, a quart, four cups, 32 liquid ounces, a day? certainly, though i've never kept track and don't intend to, has to be an absolute minimum.

that's just water itself from the jug i keep in the fridge, with maybe a little lemon squeezinz in it occasionally. half the time i just gulp it from the pitcher so there's no measuring of it anyway. i think i fill the pitcher at least once a day, and it holds at least half a gallon, more like 2/3. but there's two of us all day, and sometimes there's a third comes over in the evening and has some too.

so i don't have an accurate measure, just that as a general idea.

but i also consume a lot of water based liquids in other ways too.

at least a couple of cups of milk, mixed with chocklet and coffee, by itself or on cerial.

and then the staple of my diet is pasta in broth. lots and lots of broth. with a bit of lemon squeezinz in all of it.

so all in all, as a guestimate, i'd say i probably on average consume somewhere in the neighborhood of twice that.

i find that slightly strange because as for me, neither fruit juces nor carbonated beverages help with thirst at all.

i can understand not liking the taste of it though. really depends upon where you are. it doesn't just not taste the same everywhere, it actually totally has completely different amounts of different things, sometimes even completely different things, in it.

the water off of rocks and moss way up in the tops of mountains and directly from the snow melt, not only tastes, but IS WAY different then anything that comes out of the tap in ANY city.

bottled water is mostly though, just filtered tap water.
real spring water, for actual artesian springs, is also another thing entirely from any of those already mentioned.

you almost certainly WON'T find REAL spring or snow pack runoff water in ANY kind of stores anywhere.

and if you've never tasted the real thing, you have every reason to think i'm nuts until you do.

i only know about such things because i grew up way out in the boonies and near the tops of some fairly respectable mountains, and that at a time, when human population levels were MUCH lower.

I'd say about 60 ounces a day would be very good of water alone -- not counting other means. If you exert yourself more then you know you need more salts, which can easily come from canned veges. And you'd need more water. I don't think we really require as much as we are told though. But you should try to keep yourself hydrated enough for your own body and needs.
