A Strange Social Experiment At Uni Today - Speed Dating

In the first workshop for one of my classes today, we were forced to engage in some sort of... social experiment, if you could call it that.
The class focuses on learning to work in an interdisciplinary manner, which basically means using a variety of art forms in a collaborative manner. Part of the assesment is based on group work.
We had to "speed date" and then rate each other based on certain critera. We had to talk a little about our creative experiences, our focus at uni, our ability to work in groups and our overall persona for 2 minutes, then swap and listen to the other person. Afterwards we had to rate:
1. Whether we'd work with this person - 1-5 (5 being very likely)
2. This person's knowledge of their discilpine - 1-5
3. Whether they'd be better in a team as: creative, logistics, leader or mediator.
4. And describe them in 3 words.
I was quite surprised at my results, to be honest. I've never been one to love arkward social situations where I'm being JUDGED, but apart from the "marks" I recieved from a pretentious bitch I went to highschool with, I ranked relatively high.
This obviously means I put across a good "first impression". But, is this impression lasting? Is this really an effective way of working out someone's ability to work in a group? Can you really get to know someone in 2 minutes?
So:
What do you think of this "speed dating" as a university thing?
& What do you think of "speed dating" in general?

Eh, never really tried, it, so I've had no real reason to evaluate it.
But, is this impression lasting?
Yes, probably longer than we think.
Is this really an effective way of working out someone's ability to work in a group?
no, I don't think so
Can you really get to know someone in 2 minutes?
a little bit
What do you think of this "speed dating" as a university thing?
Might be an interesting way to learn what first impression you give to people.
& What do you think of "speed dating" in general?
quite stupid, but it might work. At least you know that all persons you will talk to are looking for a relationship or something similar, which should increase your efficiency. But I'd rather find a relationship in a different way.

I've been a lot of speed dates.
The girl takes one look at me and leaves.
I have found that I never really get to know a person in one day let alone two minutes. IMO, you have to see what people do rather than listen to what they have to say in order to truly get to know them.

This obviously means I put across a good "first impression". But, is this impression lasting?
Not to the pretentious bitch, apparently.
It's 50/50, a lot of decisions are made relatively quickly. And if you make a bad first impression it's a real uphill battle to get anything done. However, if you only kind of kick ass but make a bad first impression your kinda ass kicking will make you look like some sort of super hero. Ah, the benefit of low expectations.
So...guess what kind of first impression I make...
The reverse is true as well. If you make a good first impression but in fact suck, while they might give you the benefit of the doubt for a while, eventually your sucking will be extra proportional.
But you're hardly going to find people advocating that your first impression be accurate. They always say, "Good."

That wasn't a first impression. Like I said, I already knew her.

And no i've never tried speed dating, sounds funny though.

I know, that's what I meant. She knew you for a long time and apparently didn't like you so your good first impression didn't last with her.It was a jokey aside, I have no idea what her first impression of you was, it was just the only example of someone who knew you for a while in your OP

Well as I was reading a blog the other day (I think it was "The sneeze") and apparently some psychologist wrote a book stating that the first four minutes you spend with a person influences your relationship with them forever. So yeah, I'd say a good first impression does last :)
Offtopic, I also read that thing someplace. Apparently, throw in an extra 30 minutes of pretty much just staring at eachother, and you're seventysomething percent sure to fall in love with that person (and viceversa).
The mind boggles.
One of the bars on campus is holding a speed dating event. Might go along for the laughs plus its raising money for charity.

LOL Good lord, if you knew how terribly awkward my first four minutes were with my fiance, you'd be shocked that I AM affianced!

Going to the speed dating meetings is a great way to get laid in college. The kind of girls that go to them are looking to hook up without getting picked up by the regular guys that hang out in bars.
Granted most of the girls that go are plain or ugly, at least at my university, but there is usually at least a girl or two that is worth checking it out for. Usually the cute, but Phi Beta Kappa nerdy types.

You can find what a person is all about by having a less than five minute conversation with them. It is right there you will find if you 'click' or not.
You really think you can learn about a person in 5 minutes? Even less? Next you'll think the "Easy" button exists like in that commercial...

You're telling me. First time I ever met or spoke with my SO, he creeped the hell out of me. Second time I talked to him, I was still so bothered from the first experience that I almost walked out of the room.
As for speed dating, I don't know what I think of it - having never tried it. Sometimes, people click right off the bat, and sometimes they don't; it'd probably be a good way to secure a couple of follow-up dates, and THEN see how it goes, but I'd not base a relationship off those five minutes.

I'm sorry, I don't generally go for creepy men. :p Nice try, though.
Granted, you are cute. Bonus points? (And then subtract seven million, five hundred and forty-two thousand, six hundred and sixty... one points for the whole pants thing.)

What do you think of this "speed dating" as a university thing?
'Tis a very interesting experiment on how you project yourself to others; and it'll help if you ever get into a job where you'll be required to evaluate someone else.
Not that I'd be "gung-ho" about participating in it...getting "tested" always gets me antsy for some reason.
What do you think of "speed dating" in general?
Never tried it, but I have thought about it. Probably not useful for a relationship but it'd be good to see if there's dating potential anyway. Very rarely have I ever had some kind of a lasting relationship with someone that I didn't have that "spark" with initially, and speed dating would be informative in that regard.

Well, as a Uni device I'm not sure.
In General however, it can work. After all, when meeting people you size them up quick, and then end up with Trenchant views of the person anyway, so what's different?

Ooh! I love it! I've been speed dating several times in the last three years. The issue is, you have to know how to approach it.
1.) You will not meet the love of your life here.
2.) Probably, you will not be matched with anyone (that is, they will not pick you or you will not pick them. It has to be mutual).
3.) You can make some friends there, and you will be able to meet some other people.
If you remember the three points, it rules! Plus, when my college does it, we get free sandwiches and mocktails ...

I have a really funny and pathetic anecdote about this one girl who flustered me a-way-back in high school, but this isn't the time for it.
As far as SO's go, i can just leave it that there's a vibe or there isn't, and people who move within people's vibes know what i'm talking about. The only people i've ever spent any significant energy on were instant attraction for more than just visage (on both parties' parts).
Nice sig, btw. :p

Speed dating on NS would be awesome, especially given the time warps.
I've never tried speed dating in any seriousness (but i have done it in jest, and that ROCKS)
I'm really good at leaving lasting impressions upon people, for which now i simply reply in the likes of Lester Burnham:

Why mocktails? Because, officially, the university doesn't support alcohol.
I go looking for friends because, as an engineer, I only see 25-30 people on a regular basis. Yeah, it's hard to actually make connections. Last time I went was more successful than any time before since I actually managed to make a connection (we both put each other down). I thought there might be a friendship there, but I seem to have be wrong. Regardless, I did have a lot of fun.

That we have similar expectations from the entire thing and had the same the response to the experience. Could have been the poster couple for it's benefits.
I've had to work in groups pretty much as long as I can remember, and yes, I do think that first impressions are lasting, and fairly accurate. Every single time I've second guessed my first impression of someone, I've gone wrong.
Mind you, there are those that simply don't give a 'first impression' right off the bat, for whatever reason...you don't notice them because you're too busy or what have you...but that doesn't mean you're not making a first impression on THEM.
I'm not saying people don't change. They do. But put people into a group and very quickly you will see what kind of people you're dealing with.
