The fourth movie in the "Terminator" franchise will hit cinemas next year, according to US reports.

"Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" will be released on May 22, 2009 in American cinemas, the Hollywood Reporter has announced.

Christian Bale stars as John Connor

Christian Bale will star as rebel leader John Connor in the film, which is scheduled to begin production in the spring in New Mexico.

Also, this article (http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7010164641) says it'll be part of a new trilogy...

Hopefully this movie won't suck, I'd love to see another good Terminator movie

OK, it's official: T:SCC and the films after T2 have diverged.

I'm going to be a little confused, since I'm a T:SCC fan, and I was quite content with declaring T3 to be non-canon.

But Christian Bale is involved, so I'm not too worried.

Personally, I don't care if people make bad sequels to movies I like. Some people seem to feel it 'ruins' the older ones for them, but I don't. Of course, I still want it to be good.

I haven't been overwhelmed by The Sarah Connor Chronicles, so I don't know. I don't know that it matters because I'll likely see it anyway, though I did manage to resist the second attempt at Alien vs Predator, so there is hope (except that I did watch Transformers, Rise of the Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider, and Dragon Wars...so I shouldn't pat myself on the back for being 'discerning'...)

Of course the implications of the series are that if Cameron hadn't been sent back and jumped the Conners into the present T3 would have remained canon.

I wasn't very impressed by T2, to be honest. The whole "good Terminator" thing wasn't a good idea then, (though Arnie carried it off well, TBH), and isn't a great idea now (even if Summer Glau is wonderful eye candy). T3 brought a little of the sense of inevitability back to the franchise, and I liked seeing the technologies of the HKs and other Skynet weapons prefaced at the military base.

Personally, I loved the Terminator trilogy, all three of them. Number 2 was definitely the best, but 3 wasn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be. I thought it was quite good, going slightly deeper into the origins of Skynet etc as well as the neat "downer" ending.

I look forward to a fourth film.

As far as the Sarah Connor Chronicles are concerned. I've only seen the first episode, and I already hate it. Especially the new teenage girl Terminator. The actress doesn't portray the character robotically enough. All she seems to have mastered is an expressionless face, and that's it. The writing for her isn't terribly good either. She constantly uses relaxed pronunciation like "gonna", amongst other aspects of her language which just destroys the image that she is a machine.

Using a teenage girl Termie also makes for some really cheap and stupid sexual tension with John Connor.

The writing for her is terribly inconsistent. In the first episode she is able to 'pass,' she is relaxed and able to pretend to be an average teenage girl to gain John's confidence. But then in later episodes she is suddenly clumsy and unable to blend with that wide-eyed literalism. What happened to her ability to convince John she was normal? Did that program get corrupted by a blow to the head during one of the fights? They haven't decided whether they want to play the 'is she alive' chord or the 'clumsy robot in a human world' chord and so they go back and forth.

It might have helped if they'd established which type of Terminator she was, so they'd have some kind of guideline. I noticed in the very first episode, John asks her this very question, but she doesn't bother to answer him.

If she was established as an offshoot of the T-800 i.e "Arnie", then they could have gone down that road i.e robotic, clumsy, emotionless, logical. If she was established as an advanced TX, then they could have gone down the questionably sentient advanced android route.

I wouldn't have minded either, as neither are particularly new character concepts. Just as long as the character was consistent.

Is there really such a thing as a realistic lightsaber duel?

Lightsabers in themselves are not realistic. But, if they were, the people using them would behave in a certain way, especially since dueling with them would have been a millennium-old art. They would not swing about wildly with them, like the characters in Episode I do. In Episodes II/III the combatants use excessive energy and are fighting more to show-off then to avoid death. The participants in each duel appear to have never held a sword before (with exception of Dooku, who seems like he had two months training), as they miss several openings. With Episode IV, the duel would not have lasted more than ten seconds. In Episode VI Luke would have had his ass handed to him because of his tendency to pull-back before he strikes. Real lightsaber (supposing one could exist) fighting would look something like the duels in Yojimbo. Episode V is a battle where Luke is cocky and inexperienced with dueling, as one can see by his style. Vader has multiple opportunities to kill him, but clearly refrains on purpose. Vader's style is calm and precise, as it should be, and becomes more believable because he holds his (exceedingly light) weapon with one hand.

Edit: The prime example of poor sword-play in Star Wars is executed when Mace Windu has Palpatine down. Windu's blade is a hair away from his adversary's throat. http://www.bothan-online.com/IMG/jpg/mace_windu.jpg Someone who had trained as long as Windu had would have simply skewered Palpy's jugular. What does Windu do? He pulls back his weapon with two hands like five-year-old, and consequently has the appendages chopped-off.

T1-Excellent movie.
T2- Great sequel to T1, also an excellent movie.
T3-The sequel to the sequel. It didn't need to be made, it murdered the storyline. It was allright leaning towards poor.Good action, bad storyline.
T4-Needs to be made to wrap up the mess of T3. Could be good if they make the future look cool enough. Thay should either finnaly end it(has to be a decent, reasonable ending to make it a worthwhile movie) or finish with a leave us hanging sort of ending. There shouldn't be a t5 or a need for a T5, or even a hint at there will be a T5. If they really want to carry it on they can use that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles(not a bad show by the way, it works the Terminator storyline pretty well) to rap it up.

With something like the Terminator series, you can't completely rule out any of the films (or novels for that matter) as apocryphal since they all represent possible futures and outcomes. The saga is basically about Humanity and Skynet slugging it out in a localized Time War, and every movie represents calculations made by each side and the possible outcome. The SCC basically represents a countermove by TechCom to intercept the Connors and prevent the timeline as represented in T3 from happening.
