To keep out riff raff. *nod*

As time goes by, that plan becomes less and less effective. :p

CMOS checksum error - Default Loaded

Please re-setting CPU Frequency in CMOS Setup

press F1 to continue DEL to go to Setup

With only IDE cable I have my DVD drive and harddrive hooked up to it. It will pick up my DVD drive but not my harddrive (even if I have just one hooked up) is that an issue?

Also it will not pick up my keyboard (a USB keyboard) So I have not been able to continue or go to setup. If I do go to setup is it hard to figure out what it wants done?

I just got the stuff I needed today and I get this! *sob*

Aside from making sure that the drive has power, are you sure that the PATA controller is supported by your OS? If it's a new motherboard and an old OS, the answer to that question might be no. Can you at least see it in the BIOS?

Check power connection. Does the drive spin up when you switch the machine on?

no, you would, the BIOS is part of the motherboard.

As for help, check your jumpers, make sure you have them set correctly.

I mean, check the power connection to the drive itself.
When you switch on the machine, get your ear as close to the drive as you can an listen for any noise coming from it. Try to ignore fans and other drives.

The BIOS isn't picking up the drive at all yet. Check master/slave jumpers on the back of the drive as mentioned by rolling squid.

Computers do get more complicated over time =P But hey for college work, youtube, and the occasional dabble in Fable Lost Chapters (yes i know its an old game) I really dont' have any problems.

That is not an old game. :p

In my experience, computers get more and more unreliable. My old Pentium II was much more reliable than some of the new computers I've worked with.

It was let to take the postion it was on the cable, it is the master now.:D

but the still leaves the BIOS issue apparently.

huh. usually BIos only pops up if your computer can't find your OP. This may seem a really stupid question, but you're sure the operating system is installed?

My standard responce to a question like this was to quote a friend of mine when we both worked in tech support, 'See, there's this demon, and it lives inside your computer; and it doesn't like you!'

Best answer out of any. ;)

Why must computers be complicated?

Simple. Without problems to fix, nerds would get absolutely nothing. This is why engineers continue to proliferate: they create easier ways of doing things, but only do the job half-assed. In doing so, they make their lives much, much easier, and allow others to follow in their footsteps and fix the problems, thereby getting some action for themselves. These engineers then talk to each other, decrying the loss of action once the problems are solved, and then begin formulating a new way to make life easier. With the sudden attention, they rush to completion to minimize their efforts and maximize the reward ratio, leaving glitches for others to fix.

This is called the ellipse of life. Engineers are always quick to point out the fact that since planetary orbits are elliptical, and the planets themselves are ellipeses when a cross section is taken along the supplementary longitude lines, then the cycle of their lives is also elliptical. That, and the fact that at any point in the cycle, their level of getting action can be expressed using the sum of the distance between the focus that is their ability to repair and the focus that is their ability to advance. Fear them, for they are mighty.

A walk in, and yes.

and that begs the question of did the caller believe him?
Well... she looked at the both of us for a minute or two and then slowly said that she could believe it. Then we got to work in recovering her file and gave the standard lecture about saving, back-ups, and never trusting floppy disks that you just found with your 500 page thesis.

sounds to me like you need to check your BIOS settings, but without a functioning keybord that's not really possible is it?

possible things:
jumpers (on non-SATA drives)
power
BIOS settings
faulty drive

The "Technology is the work of the devil!!!"-stereotype is old, it's not funny any more.
:p Who said that?
Richard Cook said that according to this list of programming quotes (http://xona.com/quotes/programming.html).

I think the main reason why it's difficult to understand computers is that while our minds are designed to understand the physical world and have extensive experience of living in the physical world computer software lives in the virtual/digital world that seems different, weird, odd and mysterious to us humans.
