Ok here we go!

4.7 centered at 53.321°N, 0.314°W

Distances:

48 km (30 miles) S (178°) from Kingston upon Hull, England, UK

79 km (49 miles) E (94°) from Sheffield, England, UK

Yeah, if that one fault goes, everything between the Rockys and the Mississippi is fucked and west of the Mississippi is going to get shaky.

Yeah, I know! Stupid New Madrid fault. My city is about an hour north of the tip of that fault, and 30 minutes away from a smaller, dead fault. So, if a large enough quake hit, my town would probably be devastated.

You know, I didn't really even think it was that big of a deal, until I realized that all my friends from Northern Illinois didn't do earthquake drills like we did in the southern part of the state. I thought it was just a standard test everyone did. But I guess not.

OK, OK.

But 4.7 rounds up to 9, and 9 is CLOSE to 9.8, so I was basically right. And if you disagree, you can't do simple maths.

Also, as to dying -

Yeah, I bet. Much damage to your house? I am afraid of a big one to hit here, because it was a long time ago when the last major one hit, and consequently the building codes and not set to handle 'quakes. So, with my mom having a really old house, I am afraid of what the damage could be like.

The house we lived in at the time was over an area in Tacoma that happens to rest on one of the largest piece of granite in the world(according to the papers). Covers the whole Old Town and downtown areas. So that cushioned the blow. However down in the tide flats where the industrial area of Tacoma lies liquefied. Apparently it was very crazy there. Seattle also received some heavy structural damage to the old town. The good thing was right after the Army had black hawks in the air over Tacoma 10 min after the quake ready to assist. Was surprised the government was that quick.

Bear in mind my Yanqui friends that for many this will have been a first earthquake with a first earthquake buzz. Also nothing is earthquake proofed (not that at 4.7 you really need it)

Though, was there a quake in Kent in 07?
