Pakistan bans YouTube
http://pakistaniat.com/2008/02/22/youtube-blocked-in-pakistan-why
To summarize it all:
Pakistan has banned access to YouTube because of what it deems blasphemous (I.E. anti-Islamic) material posted on the website.
What do you think? Acceptable or not?
A dictatorship cracking down on the freedom of communication!
Say it ain't so!
Apparently, it's not going to be a dictatorship for long...
But anyway, I don't think that even Saudi Arabia has banned YouTube. I have been told by Muslims that Pakistan is a corrupt nation (from Islam's point of view). I have also been told by Pakistanis (who may or may not be Muslim) that the country is one of the most liberal Islamic states out there. That's why this reason for banning it comes as a shock.

Some posters on Slashdot thinks it's just a cover story for blocking information about vote rigging in Pakistan, and, as we all know, Slashdot is always right.
There is apparently a couple of videos up on youtube about that. I looked at one of them, and I'm sure it would have been very enlightening if only I understood the language.

Update: Not only have they banned access, they were also accidently responsible for the site being down everywhere else in the world (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7262071.stm) for about an hour earlier today.

Wow.
Users are quite upset. They're screaming at ISPs which can't do anything.
I find this very encouraging. If there's anything that will solve ignorance and intolerance, it's the internet and other means of effectively communicating with the rest of the world, and of course the will to do it.

It is rather strange. There are mullahs and such that I could see protesting YouTube for it's supposed corrupting effect, but I cannot see the government bowing down to their demands on this issue. I would say it's not for religious/moral reasons, but political ones.

Anyone who finds this surprising just hasn't been paying attention.
The only thing that is surprising is that the Land of the Impure and the other territories unfortunate enough to have been overrun by the world's most intolerant creed have taken this long to pull up the latest weed of free expression poking up through the rubble of Moslem oppression.
Clearly, free thought is to Islam as kryptonite is to Superman.

I seriously, seriously doubt this is due to Islamic fanaticism and significantly more likley to be Musharrif desperatly trying to hold onto some last shreds of power before the new government no confidences him and throws him out (possibly by trying to appeal to the fanatical element)
The Pakistani government is not really on the side islamic extremist groups:

It does. There is an element of achieving 'purity' behind how the state of Pakistan has evolved from getting rid of hindus and sikhs in '47 to ahmadis in 60s to shias in 80s and now even barelvi sunnis are targetted by salafi-deobandis sunnis.

^ just ignore trolls. Why feed them. This type of attention only spurs them to post more.
Meanwhile, Qari Saifullah Akhtar (the man Benazir accused of plotting her death) has been arrested.
He is no small fish in the pond. He is up there among the big sharks. He planned a coup to bring an islamic dictatorship in 95. Also involved in the Pearl killing. He was released from prison from Musharraf. His ties with ISI is very deep and until now he was untouchable.
Expect bombings in retaliation.

By blokin' freedom of communication they keep people ignorant and docile. Letting the ones with power stay in power, the rich get rich, the poor stay poor that's how it goes, everybody knows...
