May I say that "I listen to bands you've never heard of" is about the cheapest attempt to be pretentious EVER.

You should qualify an artist's worth not by obscurity but by talent. And, hopefully, if they're talented... they're not that obscure.

Example: I like Victor Wooten, bassist for Béla Fleck & the Flecktones (who I also like). While it's kinda pretentious, they're a mostly-touring band and I know Victor is crazy popular among bassists (at least the ones that I know). None of those mentioned are that obscure... and they have talent.

Plus, acts like Eric Clapton and John Mayer are crazy popular... and talented. (Though I feel like I could be opening a can of worms by putting Clapton and Mayer next to each other. If Mayer matures, he could be as big as Clapton is- though he's already pretty good.)

But, you know. Back to the gays causing economic recessions and all the troubles of the world and all! :P

I rarely watch T.V at all, but occassionally catch an episode of Survivorman or Mythbusters. I listen to good music. Good music = music that I think sounds good, regardless of genre, band, or who or where it is advertised. I wear clothes that are cheap and comfortable, so mostly not name-brand stuff. (though everything is technically a brand) What can I say, I'm cheap. Would you say that I am controlled by pop culture; being a suburban, white, middle-class male?

I wasn't specifically talking about your post, which was more neutral.

Someone has an opinion... he would back it up by claiming that he feels God is punishing Israel for their sins... which is something that has happened in Jewish history, quite a bit actually. His viewpoint (which is really, just homophobia) expresses a sentiment that should in general be more prevalent with JEws, as much of their experience with God's changing favour/disfavour.

Can't help but think this would explain the Earthquakes in Britain of late.

How? By making fun of his comments? I feel that as individuals with free speech we have a right to do that if we consider someone's opinion to be ridiculous, same as we have the right to refute it by making comparisons to another discriminated group who may be closer to his heart.

Actually, discrepancy between established facts and the stated belief DO make a person's belief inaccurate.

If you believe, as the MP presumably does, that tolerance of gays directly caused god to become angry and smite Israel with earthquakes, then just like him, you are dressing up a belief as an assertion of fact. If you are going to make an assertion of fact, then, just like him, you should be prepared to be able to back up your assertion by proving the facts.

Merely saying you believe it is not proof that it is true, as a matter of fact.

Therefore, it is accurate to dismiss the MP's remarks as unfounded and inaccurate, because there are no facts in support of an assertion that the earthquakes were caused by a god being angry about a social attitude, whereas there are plenty of facts about seismological causes of the earthquakes.

I don't know about grammar, but the spelling rules can get pretty wonky. "I before E except after C unless it sounds like A - or unless we just plain feel like it" for example. And what the hell is the point of letters like C? Unless you pair it with another letter it simply duplicates either K or S. Q is another good example, if you want to spell queen you could just as easily spell it kween, or q could make the "kwuh" sound without needing the letter u paired with it. So in point of fact english spelling is quite arcane, you're just used to it.

That was entirely against the wishes of the British HQ in the area, as you would know if you'd actually researched it. The Paras were originally told to open fire on anyone attacking them, as there were snipers in the area, and it was thought that they might attack British troops. They were told to cease fire after the first fatality, but did not obey this order.

The events of Bloody Sunday were not what the British desired, and it's entirely irresponsible to blame that on the British in general.

Aye, the kind of massacre where three people die after a crowd attacked Britsih troops. They didn't have rubber bullets in those days and that the soldiers were quite so restrained is a testament to their excellent discipline in this case.

Simply untrue. Africa is poor because it has too many people, and too many crap dictators, neither of which are our fault. We left Africa nigh-on 45 years ago in most countries' cases. That's three generations in most African states. That they've yet to sort their countries out is no longer our fault.

North America is not poor, nor is Europe. India and China are quickly becoming global superpowers, and were not really aversely affected by British rule as much as some claim. South America has too many mountains, jungles, and areas of tundra to really facilitate the creation of wealth.

As I posted, my rant was directed at AW. I apologize if my words offended anyone, and yes, we can't blame others for what their ancestors have done. I'm calm now, but AW's posts against England just pushed me to the limit (and coming from someone who isn't living in Ireland and probably understands zilch of British/Irish politics). To me, his ideas came from a sole source, and this source defends a particular cause. He only goes by what the IRA (be that a web site or a paper he once read) has to say.
