Would you go, or have you ever gone naked in public?

Looks like the Jessica's law thread had degenerated into a naked in public thread. So it is time to bring a naked in public thread back.

So, the questions are:
Would you ever go naked in public if it were legal?
Have you ever gone naked in public?
What is wrong with going naked?
Why are Americans hung up on naked = sex while the rest of the world recognizes nakedness as natural and not necessarily sexual?

Yes, I have gone naked on a public beach in Florida where public nudity was legal. Yes, I would go naked again in public if it were legal. Why? Clothes are to restricting and there is noting wrong with a naked human body.

Would you ever go naked in public if it were legal? - Nope. I care about the well being of others.

Have you ever gone naked in public? nope. I care about the well being of others

What is wrong with going naked? no where to put your change.

Would you ever go naked in public if it were legal? Maybe, if I had higher self esteem

Have you ever gone naked in public? No

What is wrong with going naked? People see things you don't enjoy seeing. And If you're male and a very attractive girl walks past...

Why are Americans hung up on naked = sex while the rest of the world recognizes nakedness as natural and not necessarily sexual? Because they're even more prudish than their British forebears.

I would if I was surrounded by other people doing it so as to not stick out.

But, if you are male, you might stick out. :p Which by the way is natural and normal and other males may also be sticking out so it isn't like you'd be the only one in the crowd. :p

Seems like those who wouldn't go naked in public have a low self esteem. In Jr. High School, High School, and the military the men had an open communinal shower so maybe the men are more inclined to go naked in public, or at least with other men around.

In school however, I understand the girls had "individual private showers." I wonder why? If communal shower were good enough for the guys, why not the girls?

Even better would have been communal shower for both the boys and girls. :D

Heh, well, in my high school locker room, the showers were so scary that no one used them at all - we just all tried to get gym scheduled at the end of the day so we could go home and clean ourselves in showers where cockroaches weren't as likely to come out of the spigot as water. *shudder*

(Or, alternatively, people like me simply limited our participation in gym class to "showing up and standing around," which made showering fairly unnecessary.)

Impossible in the late 1950's early 1960's school. The coaches insured each person participated in gym and each person took a shower. We had a U shaped shower. On the side you enter on the water was on full cold. On the side you exited from the water was on damn hot. Your ran through the full cold to the bottom of the U,rinsed well, then ran down the hot side. Hated those showers. :(

I don't think it's because that we're assigning some kind of false sexuality to nakedness - we're sexual animals and nakedness makes the functional differences obvious. I think it's because the English speaking world is less comfortable with the idea of gender. This probably related to the absence of grammatical gender from the language, which reinforces the gender-neutral mode of higher-level thought. But since we're still animals, the base urges assert themselves in the ways they can. As a consequence, we live in a gender-dysfunctional society-in-denial where overt differences are hidden and subliminal/sexual ones are exaggerated. For example, women are expected to wear lipstick and makeup to reinforce the feminine features of their face, but this fact is something that rarely reaches the forefront of the male mind, and is considered more aesthetic than sexual by women, which I think is form of denial. In the mass media, explicit lines are drawn, and TV shows cram themselves with sexual euphemisms, over-sexualized gender roles, and scanty, sexualized clothing that viewers are subconsciously trained to accept because they do not cross the line into their consciousness, but when Janet Jackson accidentally shows that nipple and the arbitrary line is crossed, sex jumps to the forefront of the repressed mind and everybody shouts to push it back in the closet.

Probably not, I tend to need protection from the elements such as sun, biting cold, pathogens, stinging insects, and slightly rabid individuals. Plus, imagine how odd it would look wearing shoes and no clothes..:p

No.
What is wrong with going naked?
There is nothing inherently wrong with it, but I don't want to see everything of everyone.
Why are Americans hung up on naked = sex while the rest of the world recognizes nakedness as natural and not necessarily sexual?
Because people are naked when they have sex(generally?). So everytime we see naked people, sex pops into our heads as a neon sign.

Obviously clothes are natural to me, so I like to wear them. I don't think I would go naked in public, but I'd sure as hell be shirtless a lot more often, since I live in Florida and I enjoy not wearing shirts.

Nothing is wrong with being naked in public, it's just not normal. But say, 1 out of 10 people did it for awhile, it wouldn't become so unnatural.

It's legal at the college I went to (UC Santa Cruz). In fact, every year during the first rain there's a huge naked procession called the Porter Run (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Rain) that goes through all of the colleges, originating, of course, at Porter. I know that's a local name for the exercise and I'm googling like crazy trying to find another name or some sort of visual reference.

Basically, it's a drill exercise involving three participants. The middle participant rolls toward one side. The participant on that side must dive over the roller and into a roll of his own. As the first roller stands up, the third participant then dives over the second roller, thus becoming the roller. The first roller now standing then dives over him as the second roller stands. The three weave between eachother at high speed, one always rolling, one always standing and one always diving into a roll.

Yep, quite a lot, usually on holidays on the beach.

Nothing at all. If it's warm enough and not too sunny, it just feels perfect.

Why are Americans hung up on naked = sex while the rest of the world recognizes nakedness as natural and not necessarily sexual?

I've NO idea, to be honest. Especially the being seen naked by a kid = sex offender notion is something I personally just can't get my head around. It would be so hilarious if it wasn't so deeply sad.
I think by being so hysterical about nakedness, society instills a clear sense of panic about being seen naked in public. I would imagine that this would inevitably lead to more general insecurity and a very unhealthy detached feeling towards one's own body... not very good. I think humans have enough sexual hang-ups without such paranoia being poured on them...

Define "in public". I've already been naked in the back garden of people I didn't know (friends of friends), in front of friends and people I didn't know.

More specifically, I was standing naked holding my underpants over an (empty) barbecue stand in a somewhat inefficient attempt to dry them.

This was a while ago. Well, about three years. :p

On another occasion, I collapsed naked and drunk in the corridor of a hotel. That was in 2003, in Sydney. I stopped drinking (almost completely) after that.

Perhaps. I might go naked at the beach, or in the pool. I can't see a point in going to the shops/clubbing/university/work naked. I'd burn! Clothes are partially to protect you from the elements, you know.

Have you ever gone naked in public?

After the age of three, probably not. The closest thing I've been to naked in public is naked under covers on my balcony...

What is wrong with going naked?

Nothing, really. The naked body is a natural thing. However, I'd choose not to go naked because I wouldn't feel comfortable. I already dislike my body in clothes.

Why are Americans hung up on naked = sex while the rest of the world recognizes nakedness as natural and not necessarily sexual?

I'm sure every single American is hung up on nakedness.

I'm so sick of these generalisations. Why don't you say "USA's society" or something less ignorant.

Anyway, I'm sure the reason why their society is more concerned with nakedness is because their government is quite conservative and - like many countries - laws are in place to attempt to prevent any sort of commotion.

Why are Americans hung up on naked = sex while the rest of the world recognizes nakedness as natural and not necessarily sexual?Well, not all cultures are as free about showing skin as the US are. While Europe clearly pwns the US in that, the US are still a lot more liberal than a lot of Arab countries, Saudi Arabia in particular. From what I've heard from people that worked in the oil fields over there, the Americans had seperate beaches because the Saudi men would go bathing in long pants or shirts while the Saudi women didn't go bathing at all and it caused problems when the Saudis were subjected to bathing suits.

To be honest, I went through the same, being made feel ashamed of my body for not looking absolutely perfect. Only I now, after getting over these complexes, I believe everyone is beautiful in their own way, and it doesn't matter if they're fat or skinny, old or young, male or female. It's just something we, as a society, seem to have forgotten. We focus on a set of ideals, and everything else is immediately dismissed. :(

that sounds awful

we didn't have time to shower after gym (about 4 minutes to get dressed on a good day), so we got into trouble for doing california rolls in mud (I told them the field looked wet still...)

I prefer mud too. :)

Social conditioning, I guess.Hardly. If anything, my dad was trying to condition me into showering naked in public pools again.

People tend to overestimate the influence parents have on children, and underestimate the influence other kids have on kids. ;)

Do you think you would have felt the same if nobody ever told you there was anything wrong with being naked in public?People haven't told me there was anything wrong with being naked in public, though.

Let's just say that in my more wild and carefree college days, I had on more than one occassion but in my defense...I typically wasn't alone.

I have never liked clothing and am naked whenever I have the opportunity. Of course in Michigan the weather demands a lot of clothing, most of the time. Indoors I prefer not to wear antyhing.

I would not disrobe where it was illegal, as getting arrested is not where my preferences lie. Provided it were legal, I might go nude in an area where it would not pose any health risks, and it was not too cold.

As for "decency", the whole concept about parts of our body being "evil" is a bunch of cackle.

I don't feel comfortable naked even in my own home. So no.

In just my underwear, however? If I weren't so flabby, I would do just about anything in just my skivvies.

Probably not. Even if it were legal and weather permitted, I'd still be wearing my shoes at very least (especially on Hike Naked Day). And if in a public area where I'd have to sit in places frequented by others, such as public transport or restaurants, I'd probably have a towel so as not to bring my exposed posterior into contact with places where other exposed (or even clothed) posteriors have been. Exceptions include nude beaches in the early morning -- by afternoon the sand will be too hot to walk barefoot -- and private property, my own or a friend's.

Plus, I'll need to have someplace to put my keys, money, mechanical pencils, compass, whistle, and pocket calculator.

Ironic that God created human form yet the churches are really prudish...
