What is "guilt"?
Sagittarya

I am now at the point where I'm essentially an adult, and in retrospect I have come to a revelation - I have very rarely ever felt "guilt".
"Guilt" is essentially feeling bad for something you have done. And I just have never felt it to a great extent. I always felt like people feel guilt far too easily. Then again, I've never really done anything that bad. I'm not a killer, I'm not a rapist, I'm not a pedophile, I don't hurt people unless they hurt me first. Occassionally I've had incidents with my friends and family where I felt remorse for the way I acted, but I always made up for what I did and never let thoughts of it linger. I'm on good terms with my family, on good terms with my friends. If someone is meaningful to me, I treat them right.
And I just don't understand how people feel guilt so easily. For example, go back to 6th grade. If you stepped inside my 11 year old mind, you would see my very different outlook on things. A kid in my class could cheat on a test, and then tell me they felt "guilty" about doing it. My mind just couldn't comprehend it. In my mind, I'm going "Guilty? It's a fucking piece of paper. It's a fucking school that doesn't give a shit about you? How can you feel guilt over something so damn trivial, you must have mental disease". Or in my early and mid teens when friends would lie to their parents and say they felt guilt about it, I would just think "So fucking what? Everyone lies. They lie to you, you lie to them. Even if they knew you were lying, it's just another part of life. Your parents will still love you, they won't take a trivial lie to their grave". If someone stole a pack of gum from a store, I'd just think "It's a huge corporation, no one is suffering from this. As long as you don't get caught why give a fuck?".
I just don't get it. And apparently me thinking guilt should be reserved for real crimes makes me what - a psychopath? I have lots of love, I love my family, love my friends. I'm kind to animals, I give money to homeless people, I offer meaningful advice to total strangers. I'm not detached from humanity, I just don't feel "guilt". Is there something wrong with me?

The feeling associated in western cultures with not living up to your "ought" values. It's associated with a questioning of one's own self worth, because of this failure.

You're young yet. Just wait, you'll feel guilty, really guilty, over something you'll wind up doing. And you will OUGHT to feel guilty, cuz that something will be pretty bad. I mean, damn, that kind of thing is so bad it makes ME feel guilty.

Guilt stems from the mistaken assumption that one is the original author of one's actions.
And, Sagittarya, you're not a psychopath, you're just very good at rationalizing your behaviour. Or not very good at seeing how hollow your rationalizations are.

Are my rationalizations hollow?
I think I might be an Aspie. I have never been to a psychiatrist so I woudln't know. Probably not though, I'm a mental disorder exclusive hypochondriac.

Right, you know how in the universe, there is matter, and anti-matter?
There is also fun, and anti-fun. Anti-fun is guilt.

For example, there is also the pain of having someone kick you in the testicles.
Don't forget the pleasure of having someone lick you on the testicles. For some reason a lot of people feel guilt over that. Kooky!

Guilt is anti-fun, but not all anti-fun is guilt. For example, there is also the pain of having someone kick you in the testicles.

I have no regrets, only a huge to-do list, part of which involves going back in time.

I do have a near Catholic guilt complex. Still I silence it with reason and Ice-cream.

According to mighty Wikipedia.org, guilt is:
...the fact, state, or verdict (by a court or other tribunal), of an offence, crime, violation, or wrong committed, especially against moral or penal law. Guilt is also a cognitive and an emotional experience that occurs when a person realizes that he or she has violated a moral standard and is responsible for that violation.
Tori Amos uses a phrase I absolutely love, and I think it could surmize what GUILT is, to many. I mean, if you go with the religious connotations of it.

"Guilt" is essentially feeling bad for something you have done.Technically, that's remorse.
Then again, I've never really done anything that bad.Oh, then guilt is surely at work. You're just confused over definitions.
If someone stole a pack of gum from a store, I'd just think "It's a huge corporation, no one is suffering from this. As long as you don't get caught why give a fuck?"So you have a sense of justice, which is really a political expression of guilt. Guilt is what makes hurting people--or even thinking about hurting people--feel "bad." If you would feel bad to think of hurting someone, then you feel guilt... and it's that sense that keeps you from hurting them.
If you convince yourself (rightly or wrongly) that an action does no harm, then you sidestep guilt. But from the sound of it, guilt is perfectly happy with its hold on you. You're basically a good person.
I have lots of love, I love my family, love my friends. I'm kind to animals, I give money to homeless people, I offer meaningful advice to total strangers. I'm not detached from humanity, I just don't feel "guilt". Is there something wrong with me?Probably, but there's something wrong with all of us.
As far as guilt goes, though, I think the common (mis)understanding has simply clouded your thoughts. Most people have a very confused conception of guilt, remorse, and shame; three related but very distinct phenomena.

Guilt is ridiculous really. I mean, realistically shouldn't we all feel guilty that we waste time posting on forums when we should be out solving world hunger and that global warming nonsense? ;)

Yes.
Yes, I did too. But then I thought that no one could really be interested in knowing what a ¨quilt¨ is so (cuz I guess most of know what it is, right?), the obvious second choice was guilt. LOL!
