Pizza: Chain or local?

Local when available, but I usually end up going with chain.

Do you prefer to order pizza from a national chain (Pizza Hut, Domino's, Papa John's, etc.) or from local mom and pop pizzerias?

Seems like every time I find a really great local pizzeria, it never lasts. Within a few years, they start cutting corners and the the consistent quality of their pizza becomes highly variable quality(sometimes great, sometimes lousy). On the other hand, national chains while inferior, are much more consistent. I'll never get a great piza from Domino's, but I'll almost always get a good pizza.

Poll coming.

Local. Definitely. In a wood burning oven. Thin crust. For the proverbial win.

Depends. The Local pizza around here sucks, frankly. When the best local pizza has a pool of oil laying on the top, it's a problem. I mostly order from Gumby's, a chain based around college campuses.

One of the best pizza places in my home town closed last year. I move away to go to school, and they close after being open for... I think longer than I had been alive. :/ However, they are still selling frozen versions of their pizzas at a local grocery. It's definitely worth the drive to the other end of town. My gentleman-friend works at another local pizza place, which does pretty good lasagna, massive calzones, and from what I understand good pizza (I've never had their pizza... I was loyal to the other place).

However, here at school, no one really does local. :/ Local coffee places seem to fold as soon as they open, and we finally have a local-owned pizza place but I've been too broke to try it. We have a Mellow Mushroom, which I love, but it wasn't the same as the place from back home. Hopefully the new local pizza place here at school will be epic and will actually stay open.

Where's the "in between" option?

We don't really get many "nationwide chain" pizza makers around here (okay, so we do have Pizza Hut, but I don't think anybody would ever consider getting their pizza delivered from them), but it's not exactly "mom and pop" pizza makers either - AFAIK the ones we usually call have, like, three stores, here and in neighboring towns.

That, and we often enough make pizza ourselves, but that's a far cry from what one gets from the 'professionals', if you ask me - but don't let my flatmates and fellow pizzamakers hear that.

What about local chains? Chicago's full of them. The wife loves a particular local place, I could take it or leave it, preferring one of the local chains (at least, I think Nancy's is a local chain...it's been awhile and my brains kinda in a fog right now...)

'Course, I used to work at a Pizza Hut, so my standards are pretty low.

Local; great one nearby, and it's kept its quality for as long as I've eaten their pizzas.

Actually, there's not even much in the way of pizza chains here; there's a couple of ubiquitous chains for fast food in general, but not so much for pizza. Lots of local places - goes for most food - though.

It depends on my mood really. If local I go with Mama's Pizza, if Chain it's usually Pizza GoGo or Domino's.

However should I go for a takeawy I now go with mexican food. A gfreat place opened near campus and they use fresh ingredients. Their burritos are excellent and their tacos are delicious.

I'm so ordering a mexican takeawy when I get back to uni on Sunday.

At college? I order from the on-campus pizzeria. See, they will deliver pizza to a specific room, anywhere on campus.

Local -- either the place near my house or if I'm up near campus, I pick up a pizza at the Varsity, which has been there for something like 75+ years. (They at least been consistent for the 20 years I've lived around here.) I honestly can't remember the last time I bought a pizza at a chain.

I like making it, too. It's fun and easy and tasty.

We have an exceptional local pizza parlor, Bambinelli's. I like theirs best as far as quality.

I will settle for less for delivered on stormy nights though, so Papa John's or Pizza Hut gets more of our orders.

Mellow Mushroom wins occassionally in our house my hubby loves theirs best, I think they suck. Oh well marriage is about compromise. :p

I grew up next to a Round Table that used to be a locally owned place and had a brick oven, so I thought chain pizzas were awesome, but for some reason other Round Tables weren't as awesome.

I do as much of my business as I can at locally owned places. In Santa Cruz that was easy to do because they hate chains. Local pizza is leaps and bounds better (and sometimes worse, but I only go to those places once...SF Pizza, bleh!). In general I'm an advocate for doing your business in the community.

we really don't have much in the way of local pizzaria's round here. we have italian restaurants, and their pizzas are way better than Domino's (who i usually use), but they don't deliver. and most probably don't do takeout, come to think of it.

besides, the best thing about Dominos is the ability to order online, so i don't even have to leave my fatass chair :D

There's a spot in my town called Piece's that does some of the best pizza by the slice I've ever had. Real flippin good, and one slice is a meal. Plus, they use pesto as a sauce on some pizza's...delicious.

Oh, and they're open till 2:30 in the morning on weekends...Great for late night pizza runs after the bars close.

OSU, by virtue of being a college, has the blessing of having a highly concentrated college student population, which leaves and breathes pizza. Thus, there are at least two top-notch local pizza places, such as Catfish Biff's and The Flying Pizza (which is technically a chain, but it doesn't even have ten stores, and the sign is hand painted on a gigantic piece of particle board.)

They've both been around since before history began, so it would seem that their quality level is locked in at maximum delicious.

Local or chain? Put your hands together:

Pizza Pagliacci in Seattle.

As for individual joints, I've never had a better slice than at Village Pizza in Roslyn, WA (just over the Cascades, it's where they filmed the TV show Northern Exposure). Any place where garlic is a topping, and when you ask for it, they say "light, medium or heavy?" is my idea of heaven. There's no dessert on the menu, but there are bottles of locally-produced honey at each table. That's because the crust is so good, you eat down to it and then for dessert, you squeeze some honey on the crusts and MMMmmm!

Also, the Roslyn Brewery is right across the street, and their dark lager is the best pizza accompaniment I've ever quaffed. *sigh* My college days in Ellensburg, how I miss them.

Good call. I'd add Giordanos (for deep-dish) and Eduardos (for thin crust) to the list. There are a bunch of great small chains out there.

My local pizza places have been basically wiped out lately - bought out by clueless Chinese and Arab owners (not to blame the ethnicity there, but they just don't seem to *get* pizza). Three of my favorites are useless now, and one is just plain unsanitary. So, I'll bake one at home on occasion, or get a 5$ chain pizza when they're on special.

The closest real chain pizza shop is probably 30 minutes away, so we get local a lot more. That, and my gram owns a bar, so I get free pizzas from her. They're awesome and tasty. It really depends on if we feel like driving or not, and if mom gets pizza on her way home from work.

The pizza in the states aren't as great. Dominos, Papa Johns, etc are good, but not amazing. We have a store called Shakespeare's pizza, and while they're somewhat mediocre, they have a special pizza called peppercheese, which is the most amazing flavour of pizza, ever. :D

Connecticut's got the best pizza around, bar-none (well, perhaps except for Italy, but that goes without saying).

I grew up with Connecticut-style pizza. Back home in Port Aransas (Texas, oddly enough, though it's a tourist town), that's really all there was. This one place right on the beach, in particular, had the best in town, though it was more a lodge/bar than a pizza parlor.

See, this guy named Eddie from Connecticut (New Haven, if I recall correctly) ran the kitchen. He'd been cooking for decades, and everything was top-notch. Everything. But what was head-and-shoulders above all of the other stuff on the menu? The pizza. It was perfect. Fresh cheese, home-made sauce, fresh toppings... The works. He even put his own special blend of seasonings and cheeses in the dough, so it was that much richer.

It was the best. It still is, as he's holding on, healthy as ever (and about 80 years old, too). Makes me want to go back and have another right now.

Local is the way to go I find most of the chains pizza are either too greasy not enough topping on them or not evenly distributed (a meat lovers pizza with all the salami only covering three slices). Whereas with most locals they are good pizzas maybe a bit more expensive but a hell of a lot nicer with more topping and tastes much more fresher than picking one up from say Pizza Hut.

In saying that through a few years ago I lived in a small country town that had 4 pizza shops 3 chain and one local, the local was great and I always had it while it cost about 25% more it was worth it and many many people would buy their pizzas from there. About two years before I left the original owner (owner for 45 years) sold off the shop and since that time the new owners have put up the prices and the quality has dropped both in the way it is made and the quality of the ingredients, and I along with many other people stopped buying our pizzas from there as it was poor. I now live in a much bigger city where I have a range of local pizza shops and will select which one depending on specials that they have and what I am in the mood for these places have gourmet pizzas and are well worth the extra cost usually about $2-$3

Local here... is not a good idea. The Japanese have some very strange ideas about what looks good on a pizza and will often times just add them to be nice. Attempting to order the special in Japan can be an interesting culinary experience that will probably get you toppings that include corn kernels, dried and shredded seaweed, whole crab claws, and possibly squid ink. Oh, and mayonnaise, which the Japanese insist is THE perfect thing to dip your pizza in.

You HAVE been warned!

Chain stores for me (Well, US) would be Pizza Hut about 45 minutes away, expensive, and with a lot of extras that I really don't want (Octopus is NOT a pizza topping!) and the closest Domino's is in Tokyo so...

Hand made (And I mean hand made, yeast for the dough and everything) is the order of the day. I'd kill for actual pepperoni though.

Do you prefer to order pizza from a national chain (Pizza Hut, Domino's, Papa John's, etc.) or from local mom and pop pizzerias?

Seems like every time I find a really great local pizzeria, it never lasts. Within a few years, they start cutting corners and the consistent quality of their pizza becomes highly variable quality(sometimes great, sometimes lousy). On the other hand, national chains while inferior, are much more consistent. I'll never get a great pizza from Domino's, but I'll almost always get a good pizza.

Poll coming.

Both have their place. I think for multiple pizzas (if you have company over, for example), a national chain as this would allow some consistency between pizzas. The local pizza places are good if you only want a slice or two, or if they have one coming out of the oven that looks good that you can buy.

Cheapest pizza.

That usually excludes chains.

I'm from CT as well, about 20 minutes out of Hartford, (although everything in CT is about 20 minutes from there, we're so small of a state). We have some spectacular pizza here. My only complaint is that high quality Chicago Style Deep Dish is too hard to find. I disagree on Pepe's though....they are so horribly overrated. My town, (emphasis on TOWN, not CITY), has about 24-28 pizza places in it, and we have only 45,000 citizens or so.

Local pizza would be nicer than the somewhat blander chain variety but I don't really know of any local pizza places around where I live.

The best pizza imaginable can be found in the Mediterranean, particularly from Italy itself. Go to a proper little pizzeria there and you'll almost certainly be delighted. No local or chain pizza restaurants have anything on them.

Unfortunately, there isn't even a local pizzeria around here, so I'm lumbered with Pizza Hut. But if anybody ever tries to tell you that the stuff you get from there is 'pizza', they're wrong.

I buy local because it is better, and delivered by a very friendly chap. I have boycotted Domino's for years because it is run by a pro-life arsehole.
