Microsoft screws up again

A shock to all, I know.
This time with Vista SP1:

Microsoft warns on Vista update

Microsoft is warning Windows Vista users that a forthcoming service pack for the operating system may stop some third-party programs working.

The software giant has released a list of programs that may be broken by the SP1 update for Vista.

Most of the software hit by the upgrade are security programs that prevent Windows users falling prey to viruses, trojans and booby-trapped webpages.

The Windows Vista update will be released to the public in mid-March.

Update loop

Service Packs are among the biggest updates Microsoft issues for its various operating systems. The software firm said SP1 makes Vista more secure and reliable and introduces some new features.

The list of programs affected by SP1 is divided into three. Some will be blocked by the update, some will not run and others will lose some of their functions.

Of the 12 programs mentioned, six block viruses or keep an eye on the places someone visits online.

good ol' Microsoft. Forever making their products safe, reliable and immune to virus. No doubt, they'll next be assuring us not to worry: THEIR anti-virus software works perfectly with SP1. How 'convenient' that would be.

Certainly making me want to update to Vista even less than before.

Good old Microsoft, don't dare install an update from them til weeks or months after it's out. Bad stuff happens.

Shades of IE vs Netscape.

I imagine all those people waiting for SP1 before moving to Vista will be deciding to wait a little longer. At work we have abandoned the idea of moving to Vista, sticking with XP until Vista has been replaced by something that works. Surely this whole Vista disaster must be hitting Microsoft profits?

There's also the... issue some have been having with instant reboots upon booting windows after installing the upgrade. Quite the sign of quality! :D

I'm quite happy with my decision to get off the Windows bandwagon; XP is the last version I'll use for my compatibility needs, as I migrate, bit by bit, to my FreeBSD box. AMD64 coding awaits...

Ever since they started promoting that virus called Windows, things haven't been the same.

I use Zone Alarm, and my university use Novell on all of their hundreds of computers. Fortunately they're all still XP or SP1 would thoroughly fuck them in the ass.

Hey, XP SP2 wasn't any great update, either. As I recall, a number of MS programs weren't really compatible with it and the firewall made things even worse.

I use Zone Alarm at home and the network at the office uses Novell.
Good thing -even before this fiasco- Vista has been declared persona-no-grata by the boss,

My university actually sent out a campus wide e-mail requesting that XP users not install XP SP2 because it would seriously mess up their connection to the network.

We always get the XP Pro upgrade when we buy a PC that comes with Vista of any flavor.

This is what you get for not reading the fine print saying that Microsoft Vista isn't compatible with anything resembling a computer
