Cottage Pie. Mmmm. Mashed potato and mince... Lovely.

Since my last pie thread dealt only with sweet pies, I hereby create this thread for those who prefer savory pies. And yes, there will be a poll.

Edit: Ah, shit, shepherd's pie and cottage pie are the same thing!? :headbang:

I saw them both listed here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pie#Savoury_pies) and assumed they were different things.

No. They're different, at least where I come from. Shepards Pie tends to have carrots and other vegetable mixed in with the meat and potato. Cottage pie is pure mince and tatties.

EDIT: Alert! Alert! Incoming time warp!

The fact that piroshky (or pirogue, or any other spelling of the Russian/Balto-Slavic savory pie) didn't make your poll is a travesty of meaty-pie goodness. You haven't tasted YUMMY until you've had a smoked salmon piroshky from Pike Place Market in Seattle.

We don't eat meat pies in this country, beyond chicken pot pie. Maybe turkey pot pie, or a shepherd's pie. Empanadas are basically meat pies, but that's as close as it gets.

So I guess I'd vote for chicken pot pie.

Speak for yourself, please. Besides, the US is full of meat pie wannabees, like Hot Pockets.

I am still standing by the piroshky.

My favourite is probably a bastardised Shepherd's Pie where you remove the lamb and use venison instead.

The gamey venison is neatly cut by the potatoes and vegetables.

Shepherd's pie almost, almost allows me to forgive the English for all of the other culinary calamities they have forced upon the world. I think the saddest day in imperial history was the day the first Indian was forced to eat English "curry."

I chose steak & kidney pie, out of the listed options (and steak & kidney pudding is pretty good, too...), but if you haven't tried a steak & stilton pie yet then you've missed a real treat...

the kind of meat and potatoe pie, supposedly from cornwall, that place over in gb, however its spelled, called pasties. sometimes called pot pies too. only without all the soupy gravey. which is ok, but pasties are all solid stuff to bite into.

while not tecnically pies, i also like spring rolls and egg rolls and hum bao. the last i kind of bun with meat in it. that may have a number of other names where it's from.

and yes, i do like those meat pie kind of things more then i like desert pies. just as i also like meat dishes generally more then most deserts.
