You heard right. Officials are worried over 1 billion gallons of contaminated water that is backed up in mine shafts and a partially collapsed drainage tunnel will blow out because of increased water pressure as the snow melts.

Man, this will be one big disaster. I wonder why they haven't done something about it before now.

"Due to the unknown condition of the tunnel blockage and the large volume of water behind the blockages, we are concerned that an uncontrolled, potentially-catastrophic release of water to the Arkansas River from (the tunnel) is likely at some point," said one EPA letter sent in November.

Stan Christensen, an EPA expert on the tunnel, said the likelihood that something catastrophic can happen increases the longer nothing is done.

Wait! Let's apply the lessons we learned from the New Orleans floods.

Let's start parking some trailers where they can be of absolutely no use. And render them useless when we do decide to use them.

Fail to make any plans to evacuate.

Blame the federal government for not taking over the state's role.

Clearly the priorities are right for a big disaster because how can it be a disaster without a mobile home park being destroyed?

Officials point out that a speaker system to broadcast evacuation notices has already been installed near a mobile home park that has 300 residents near the tunnel's portal.

Colorado has funny names for their towns.
My favorites are "Dotsero" and "Orestod". Dotsero was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande R.R. when they were building a shortcut connector-track: the base camp was at the location marked "dot zero" on the survey map. The other end of the track was named Dotsero spelled backwards.

I thought Fox didn't recognise changes to weather patterns?

The EPA's Christensen said the water table is rising regionwide and that his agency can't immediately reach the same conclusion.

If you edit the first post, you can fix the title, I think. Not sure, though.

Couldn't they just evacuate the town, seeing as its groundwater is evidently going to be full of heavy metals, which cause Very Bad Retardation And Such?

The problem isn't just the town that could be evacuated, but the fact that if and when it blows it will dump all that polluted water into the Arkansas river. :(
Oh, well in that case, why not create a new hole for it to escape out of (a couple of kilotons could probably do the trick), and shore he Arkansas River end up as much as possible?

Holy carp. Leadville? I've been there. It's neat.

But I'm not so sure this article in entirely trustworthy on everything it says...after all it is Fox News and I wouldn't trust Fox News if they said the sun rises in the east unless I had backup confirmation of that first.
