Gigs and Concerts and Festivals

So what gigs, concerts and festivals are you planning to go to in the near future and which recent ones have you been to?

The last gig I went to was one held by the SU for small bands such as The Vibrants and The Colours. It wasa good night.

The next gig I plan to go to is the NME Awards 2008 Big Gig where The Cribs, Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, Manic Street Preachers and Klaxons will be playing which is in two weeks.

This summer I plan to go the Glastonbury where it has been confirmed that The Verve, Jay Z and Kings of Leon will be headlining and then Reading festival where it is rumoured RATM will be headlining.

So all in all it seems like a good line up so far.

I'll hopefully be going to Reading as well. Apart from RATM, Metallica and Queens of the Stone Age are also rumoured. And NOFX. Could be a good 'un. I was intending on going to Download, but looking at the headliners (Kiss, Lostprophets and the Offspring) I don't think I'll bother.

Gigs - Bossk in Nottingham tomorrow, then a cool local math rock band at the end of February, and 65daysofstatic when they tour in April. Nothing else planned at the moment.

Reading is just sounding better and better! I cannot wait for the NME Awards Big Gig though. Bloc Party are one of my favourite bands of all time. Shall be good.

Leeds Fest. I seriously need to get a job, though, so as to afford a ticket straight away.

Bah! I can't afford to see anybody in the near future. I was hoping to see Arch Enemy and Opeth play at Brixton Academy. I saw Arch Enemy in November there playing with Trivium (who sucked), Dragonforce (who also sucked) and Machine Head (who were alright but the sound mixing thing was a bit off).

I'm planning one as a final work for my school. It's a Rockrace followed DJ-Contest in Brussels, where each Dutch-speaking college in Brussel will sent it best band and deejay. We aim on around 600-800 people.

I don't mind an international crowd. ;)

Check www.efestivals.com for all the rumours for practically every festival. Keeping an eye on Roskilde and Rock am Ring as well, as they're generally pretty good too.

If I find the money and the time I'd like to go to Dour festival and Pukkelpop festival. I'll probably also go to some smaller ones. The last "concert" I went to was radio soulwax-mas a few months ago. Mainly dj-sets, so I don't know if it counts. It was kind of disappointing. After that I had exams until two weeks ago.

If all goes according to plan, I'll be seeing some band called Cara on the seventh, A Nile/Unexpect/Nachtmystium show soon afterwards, and Paganfest in may. Beyond that, nothing is planned.

They moved the Vineland Festival, a mere thirty minute drive from here, to next year. It sucks because we were all going. It would have been a last hurrah for our seniors before college.

Saw Iron Maiden last week, and Rage Against the Machine a week or two before that. :)

I think i'll be seeing the Stiff Little Fingers in May...I know Sonic Youth are doing a Daydream Nation set this coming Wednesday but i'm probably too late to get tickets.

I go to as many bluegrass music events as I can. Most (though not all) rock bands don't sound good live and without the aid of studio technology.

I really really wanted to go to Graspop (http://www.graspop.be/) again this year, but then I realised I'd already bought Radiohead tickets, and they fall on the same weekend :( I'd be happy to give up my Radiohead tickets and go to Belgium, but my friends don't feel the same way, so I'd be going by myself.

However, I volunteer for Oxfam, so chances are I'm going to get sent off to some British festivals anyway. They won't be as good though :(

Saw the anniversary show of The Misfits a month or so back. Terrible sound at the place they were playing (not their fault, they did fine), and i kept antagonising the critic about various aspects of the show although i didn't read the review later. Perhaps i'll go find it or something.

Not a lot goes on here in HK which is a real pain.
However, I'm seriously considering going to the Fuji Rock festival (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuji_Rock_Festival) this year. Last year they had:
Ash, The Ataris, Beastie Boys, Blonde Redhead, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Chemical Brothers, The Cure, Fountains of Wayne, Friction, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Iggy Pop & The Stooges, The John Butler Trio, Jonathan Richman, Justice, Kaiser Chiefs, Kemuri, Kula Shaker, Less Than Jake, Mika, Muse, Ocean Colour Scene, The Omar Rodriguez-Lopez Group, Ratatat, The Shins, and Simian Mobile Disco.

It's 250 Euros for a 3 day pass which is a tad steep but the trip alone would be worth it.

I just got back from a concert where several local metal bands played, including my friend's band, Stonehaven, who kick major ass. If you like metal, check out Stonehaven on my space. (www.myspace.com/kcstonehaven)

It was a great show.

Hopefully I'll get to go to Paganfest down in Tulsa, Oklahoma, or Chicago, Illinois in May. Four amazing bands are coming from Europe too play around the US. They are Ensiferum, Tyr, Turisas, and Eluveitie. It will be an absolutely amazing show.

Man, I can't wait!

Gigs I have been to this year:
Linkin Park @ the O2 arena
Dark Tranquility @ Birmingham Barfly
Kerrang Tour (Circa Survive, Fightstar, Medina Lake and COHEED AND CAMBRIA!!!) @ Birmingham Acadamy

Gigs I am going to soon:

Turisas @ The electric ballroom

Festivals I am attending:

Bloodstock Open Air @ Catton Hall

I was going to go to download as well, but the line-up looks crap this year :(

They probably would be, but I'm unfamiliar with their work.

Mm, definitely worth checking out, they're one of the bands that convinced me to get into the whole stoner rock thing so i'd jump at the opportunity to see them. In Search Of... is their best album, IMO, and The Action is Go is pretty good too...but avoid California Crossing. All of their other albums are decent enough. But yeah, I think they're something you'd be able to get into. :)

They're proper good live. Sadly they're not coming to Leicester next month so I'll be missing out.

It's actually the first time they've ever been to Australia, so I probably should go. Don't think I have any friends into them though. :(

I'm not sure. I'm definitely going to see Drop Dead Gorgeous, Every Time I Die and Scary Kids Scaring Kids in Colchester, and York, as well as Poison the Well in York.

I saw You Me at Six, We are the Ocean and All Forgotten at York last Friday, and Saosin last term.

As for festivals, I'm definitely not doing Glastonbury (Jay-Z is not my idea of money well spent) or Give it a Name (Paramore are sooooo wank). I may do Reading, if the line-up is an improvement on last year, and thus less mainstream, but realistically I'm looking at Download I think.

Reading is a (possibly the biggest, bar Glastonbury) mainstream festival...

And I wouldn't be surprised if Download doesn't sell out this year. I mean, obviously it's sold out already...;)

Meh. Reading did at least previously have more alternative acts than it did mainstream. I think last year, when I was generally given venomous looks by families out for a day to see the Chili's, was the limit.

Is that Reel Big Fish with SB6 supporting? *jealous*

Ooh, Fairport Convention!

Before Christmas, I saw: Travis, supported by Maximo Park - both of whom excellent, but Travis surpassed themselves. I also saw Avenged Sevenfold, supported by Atreyu, and some other random bands. A7X were excellent, but I was most surprised by Atryeu - previously I'd hated them, but they put on a really good show. Very impressive.

Later this month we go to Savannah to see GMEA All State Orchestra perform. :p

(We are orch geeks needless to say!)

This fall, as in every fall, we will go see Tran-Siberian Orchestra when they come here.

As far as last year, errrm we saw Roger Waters, which sadly was the most disappointing concert I have ever attended.

A couple of years ago, we saw Nickleback, Three Doors Down, Puddle of Mud and 12 Stones all in concert together. Too much fun!
