This is the latest in a long laundry list of idiotic BS that both this state, and the fundie morons in this country have committed.

Kansas HS refuses female official
St. Mary's Acad. says woman cannot ref boys game (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/highschool/02/13/female.official.ap/index.html?cnn=yes)

Now, I'm a religious person. But, this is going miles over the line. And other christians stand in wonderment over why others don't like them??? What is it with these last few years that has made the weirdos think it's okay to start acting like this publically? Seriously, the woman mentioned in the article had been officiating games at this particular school for TEN YEARS previous to this event. So, what up with the ugly head rearing itself since GWB? I'm utterly ashamed by proxy.

Yeah, it's that weird off shoot of the Catholic church that decided to take it 'old school.'

I read this yesterday, thought it was damn stupid. I dig the response of the whateveryoucallit..."That's your rule, fine. You can play basketball against yourself then, fuckers." I wasn't clear on whether or not the third referee that was called in finally called the game or not. I know at first he said he wouldn't, but I couldn't tell if he stuck to that. Haven't read the linked articles, just remembering the one stumble showed me yesterday, a blogger implied that he did, but then the article didn't seem to say if he did or not.

I just figured we ought to give credit where credit is due, and note that the conservative Protestants who make up most of Kansas may cheerfully agree to, say, literally redefine "science" in order to teach complete nonsense in public schools, but they at least have yet to demand that none of the people teaching that complete nonsense have vaginas. :p

Yeah, Kansas has had a long and storied history of doing really stupid stuff. I'm not going to get into everything, but before they were even a state it was basically a battleground where pro- and anti- slavery groups led genocides against each other so that when the referendum came up there would be less people voting for the other side. wow.

edit: Maybe it's something in the soil.

Read the article. It was a private High School in the State of Kansas. It's the Kansan Government who is investigating this because the Kansan Government does not think that this is right.

Since when does the action of a single High School show that all Kansans are like that, in the same way when one Muslim blows herself up all Muslims are suicide bombers and hate Westerners?

Your double standard sucks balls.

If God has any real feeling of dealing some justice to the world, a tornado would strike that school right about now....
What? And kill all of the students and teachers? That's a really insensitive thing to say about people in Kansas when you wish them to die of a tornado. That's like telling a South African to go die of AIDS, a person from New Orleans to go die from a hurricane, and so on.

I wonder if Kansassians are surprised by the reputation their state has...
No, but I'm also surprised that you actually believe. It's Kansan, btw.

And as a Christian Protestant living within Kansas, I believe in Evolution, that safe sex should be taught and that abstinence although admirable is a bunch of crock to teach in school, blowing your dumbass stereotype out of the water.

Here's my word of advice for ya'll:

Start thinking for yourself for a change, and don't let the media's representation of Kansas fool you. You're a fools if you that stereotype of Christians who live in Kansas are misogynistic idiots who never received a proper education, and that we all don't believe in evolution is true. Well, I think that people were responding to Kansas' long and well documented history of being a bit unbalanced. It's good that the government is looking into this, but in the past (and here as well) it has been the citizens of Kansas that really caused the problem, with perhaps the notable exception of Brown V. Up until now I've had a positive opinion of the Society of Pius X overall, especially their opposition to Novus Ordo and other excesses of Vatican II, but this is just silly.

They should be concerned with things like restoring traditional Catholic liturgy to the Church at large and purging the Church of child molesters, perverts and sexual deviants and their enablers and protectors, not nonsense like this.

Oh, shush. I'm a Missourian; I'm morally obligated to make fun of Kansas. :p

Besides, I really wasn't using a stereotype. I believe I pointed to the fact that the MAJORITY approved a school board that was happy to redefine "science" as a means towards their stupid agenda, which is true. It would be inane to suggest that all Kansans think that way. Because there is a long history of uncontested validation here, where there isn't the same in those other situations. I don't really believe that all people in Kansas act this way, but rather that there is a higher than average incidence rate including these viewpoints and this behavior, and that people from Kansas shouldn't be quite so defensive when they are faced with their history.

Why make a thread about this

How many times are you going to post that objection? This is NationStates GENERAL, under the heading of ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. If a thread is deemed spam by the Mods (peace be upon them), they will move the thread to that part of the forum.

Meanwhile, why not try listing or explaining your objection to the subject or the arguments thereabout instead of re-posting the same inane question? Better yet -- if you don't like the thread, ignore it and don't post in it.

Example -- every year, a whole lot of baseball-related threads appear. I loathe Major League Baseball and damn near everything associated with it. And I used to go into those threads and post sarcastic musings about why anyone would bother wasting their time writing about something I thought was so stupid. The answer finally came to me: because they don't think it's stupid, and I have no right to walk in and piss all over someone's thread just because I think it's a waste of time. It made me look like an asshole, and I try to avoid that whenever possible.

Long story short, avoid looking like an asshole and either constructively address the topic or just ignore it. Please?

Not that ALL (or even most) Texans or Alabamans are like that, but some of our states do have lamentable tendencies toward particular varieties of religious lunatic.
So it's perfectly acceptable to refer to black guys as gang members because obviously they aren't all gang members?
If you are referring to some black guys who are, in fact, gang members? Is it politically incorrect to note that gangs do, in fact, exist? How about mentioning that some white guys in prison really are neo-Nazis?

Yeah, Kansas has had a long and storied history of doing really stupid stuff. I'm not going to get into everything, but before they were even a state it was basically a battleground where pro- and anti- slavery groups led genocides against each other so that when the referendum came up there would be less people voting for the other side. wow.

edit: Maybe it's something in the soil.

well i have lived in Kansas for most of my life and i can attest to the fact that 99 percent of the people are normal people that arent sexust. unfortunatly there are the 1 percent of people that have to go and give the place a bad name. also Kansas was never a Genocidal place for slavery wars. what happened was that 3000 plus people from surrounding slave states came in and cast their pro slavery votes illegaly which upset the vote. There was never a huge battle.
but I suppose its in peoples nature to be wrong most of the time and heavily judgmental because i have lived in Kansas and Pennsylvania and let me tell you people in Pennsylvania think that Kansas is backwards but its not. We never had to pay many taxes and KANSAS's schools are ranked higher than many schools in Pennsylvania .
finally if you people would actually read you would have noticed that this so called School was private and in no way affiliated with the state so many people would appreciate it if you wouldnt jump to conclusions so fast and spreading stupid stereotipical lies because you probably have never lived in Kansas so how can you possibly form a valid opinion?

Really? Care to back that up with more than anecdotal evidence? Care to prove that those states have more nutjobs than other states?

No, I'm talking about generalizations like you are so avidly supporting and making. So if the news story was "Person gunned down in south/ central LA by a black perpetrator" it would be okay to say: "What do you expect? It's black people. It's south/ central. I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often." It's okay to say that then?

Uh...not just those things, but Creationism/ID officially replacing evolution, and lots more stuff. Only one or two people here posted that anything resembling "all" Kansans are nuts, and they were addressed as the drive-by generalizers that they were for posting them. Relax.

(Besides, "Now."? Really? Or what? What will you do? Glare at those drive-by posters' names with rabid intensity while thinking really bad thoughts about them? Even you can't be a subscriber to threats in an online forum.)

Ah, that. I wasn't in the state for high school (other than freshman year), so I never encountered ID in school. No one I know actually believes in Creationism. I'm back now, and in my (college) classes we learned Evolution. And lots of it.

I live in Kansas.

I heard about this in one of my classes the other day, and everyone in the class was shocked, as was I.

This group is an 'old school' Catholic group, which is not representative of Kansas.

Same here. Somehow people seem to think we're full of Phelpsians who believe only in creationism and believe women should still be at home making babies. Not that I don't realize why they do. We've built up a nasty reputation.

The majority of Kansans with the exception of Phelps-followers and this 'old school' Catholic group are open-minded people. And my schools have always taught evolution, as well. We are NOT full of sexist morons. Though I have seen more than a few hicks in Western Kansas....:p

Your double standard sucks balls.

What? And kill all of the students and teachers? That's a really insensitive thing to say about people in Kansas when you wish them to die of a tornado. That's like telling a South African to go die of AIDS, a person from New Orleans to go die from a hurricane, and so on.

What I was saying was not that they have "more" nutjobs (that would be hard to gather statistics on, without a rigorous definition of "nutjob") but that each place has nutjobs of its own particular type, and concerning the types I mentioned, the statistics are irrefutable:
NUMBER OF SELF-PROCLAIMED MESSIAHS WHO BURNED DOWN A COMPOUND TO AVOID SURRENDERING GUNS, in Texas: 1
NUMBER OF SELF-PROCLAIMED MESSIAHS WHO BURNED DOWN A COMPOUND TO AVOID SURRENDERING GUNS, in other 49 states combined: 0
NUMBER OF SUPREME COURT CHIEF JUSTICES WHO GAVE UP JOB TO AVOID TAKING DOWN 10 COMMANDMENTS ICON, in Alabama: 1
NUMBER OF SUPREME COURT CHIEF JUSTICES WHO GAVE UP JOB TO AVOID TAKING DOWN 10 COMMANDMENTS ICON, in other 49 states combined: 0

I would, indeed, shrug and be completely unsurprised by such a story. I live in Detroit, and hear about senseless killings on the local news with depressing frequency: it would be senseless to pretend that this is not a problem in Detroit.

Aw, don't mock the hicks, love. XD

Ah, I'm just kidding, anyway...

As for the whole 'woman should not have authority over men' thing, that's really wrong. We are a nation of equality, and even though you can have whatever religion you can think up, you must respect other's rights.

Although, I'm neither a Christian or a Catholic, or any religion near them, I was a Christian awhile back. I find it rather wrong that there is a directed hate toward Christians and Catholics. Not all of them are fringe lunatic groups.

Now I do not know how they assign games in Kansas but in PA, the schools get the list of officials who are officiating their games in advance.

As a licensed highschool/middle school official, I find this insulting to all officials be it male or female.

And that proves that there's no crazy people in other states how exactly? Putting something in caps doesn't somehow make this not anecdotal. Show me some sort of evidence that this doesn't happen in other states. Show me some evidence that there's no equal insanity that comes from other states.

Vatican II wasn't a bad thing. Unless you think anti-semitism has a place in the Catholic Church.

False dichotomy, my friend. The choice isn't "Vatican II and no more references to "perfidious Jews"" or "no Vatican II and anti-Semitism."

And my exact statement referred to "Novus Ordo and other excesses of Vatican II", not to Vatican II in general.

I will now abort this potential thread hi-jack :D

No, YOU are not reading. Apparently, if I put part of my post in caps, this prevents you from seeing any of the rest of it. Try re-reading the opening sentence of what you quoted.
I DID NOT EVER, EVER SAY THAT "THERE'S NO CRAZY PEOPLE IN OTHER STATES."
I DID NOT EVER, EVER SAY THAT THERE ARE "MORE" CRAZY PEOPLE IN TEXAS/ALABAMA/KANSAS THAN IN OTHER STATES, IN FACT I SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMED THAT.
I SAID THAT EACH PARTICULAR PLACE TENDS TO HAVE ITS OWN PARTICULAR KIND OF CRAZY PEOPLE.
In Detroit there are some crazy teens who will insult, beat, or even shoot other teens for their choice of stylish shoes. This is not "all" Detroiters, or "most" Detroiters, or "any significant fraction of 1% of" Detroiters. Nor can I be sure that this "never" occurs elsewhere. However, I would bet that this particular form of crazy is much rarer in Kansas.

Id be surprised if this was an isolated incident.

then you shouldn't have said. "Theyre Christians." that implies the whole Religion.

even "Theyre Christians in Kansas" is attacking the religion.

now if you said, "Theyre Religious Nutcases" then that wouldn't be an attack on the religion.
