What wonderful symbolism in many ways! The symbol of a church many consider corrupt getting a biblcally symbolic punishment.

Sorry Daistallia, but you failed at the bold part. I am 100% sure that people were not struck down by lightning in the Bible.

That's a remarkably lucky photograph. Or is it a frame from someone video taping it?

The list of things that some hyper-religious people will say this happened because of will be soooooooo long...

And it was somehow caught on camera? What, were they watching the statue twenty-four seven with a camera, taking pictures and whatnot?

I find it hard to believe, especially seeing as its in the Daily Mail, which I'm reasonably certain is a tabloid or some other type of rag.

Plus, even if it did happen, it's coincidence. Nothing more.

And is it just me, or does the photo actually look like a bad Photoshop job? Look at where it strikes the statue...it doesn't look like a real lightning strike.

Besides, wouldn't the statue need something to attract the lightning? Doesn't it have to attract a static charge? Can concrete even do that?

Thor is displease with the "Jesus" statue and decides to put the young whipper snapper in his place. *nods*

Hence the label "symbolic". ;)

And good healthy skepticism CToaN and Kyronea. :)

Yes, I can assure you that was Photoshopped. That's actually a picture of me being electrocuted.

if i was god i wouldn't have waited this long. not that i would have anything against the guy, whome no one really knows, nor has for somewhat more then a thousand years, but how his channeling of the divine will has gotten so completely twisted into what is today, basically a huge personality cult.

Clearly, DEUS NON VULT. Although Misters Volta, Ampére, Faraday and Maxwell might have a say about it, too.

Bugger. I was quite hoping the lightning enervated the statue and Rio was now enjoying a gigantic Jesus stomping about the place crushing unbelievers...:(

All the same, delightfully symbolic.

It's a huge statue on top of an isolated hill. Doesn't it get struck by lightning weekly?

Wow. How amazing. A very tall structure, on the highest peak above the city, gets hit by lightning during a thunderstorm. And it's made of reinforced concrete, which would have metal rods running through it. Someone call the Guinness Book of World Records!

[breathy David Attenborough voice]....and here, on the boards of NSG, we catch a glimpse of the rare Jaded Mod in its natural habitat, scornfully devaluing every story with it's 'seen-it-all' attitude, a trait evolved over the years through having seen too many links to too many news stories.

Let's see if we can get a little closer...

Thank you for saving me the effort. I'll just add a bit of explanation:

Lightning is so intensely bright, that any ordinary video camera (like the one this still was taken from) is overwhelmed by the intensity and that gives the bolt it's hyper-realistic glow.
