90 day Jane

The Alma Mater

I am going to kill myself in 90 days. What else should i say? This blog is not a cry for help or even to get attention. It's simply a public record of my last 90 days in existence. I'm not depressed and nothing extremely horrible has lead me to this decision. But, does it really have to? I mean, as an atheist I feel life has no greater purpose. My generation has had no great depression, no great war and our biggest obstacle is beating Halo 3. So, if I feel like saying "game over", why can't I? Anyway, I hope you enjoy my thoughts as the clock runs out. Also, if blogspot takes this down before i'm gone just go to www.90dayjane.com. Please don't attempt to "help" me. If you want to truly help, please send me ideas on how to do the deed. thx-Jane

So.. what do the good people of nationstates think of this ? Is it a hoax ? Is it serious ? Is she an attention whore ? Will she really do it ? Should blogspot remove her account ?

EDIT: blogspot did.

And are the people leaving nasty comments right ?

Well, for one thing Blogspot SHOULD remove her account, but as long as she's in the US she can say whatever the heck she likes...

That kinda sucks for her though, I bet she never followed a philosophy class...

Striving towards immortality ? Of course, that would nullify the "I'm not an attention seeker" claim.
Hoping to help others tke the same step (morbid.. but hey) ?

I'm thinking of setting up a new email and sending as many suicide techniques as i can think of, just to see what happens.
and if it is real and she picks one of mine, then like most people say, i should feel happy knowing i was able to help a person in need.

I was sent this a couple of days ago and I never opened it - I get a lot of 'check it out' mails and even though many are amazing, given the ones I actually do open, a certain ennui sets in and I don't bother opening many, so I didn't open this one.

Yet this is, simply...too many questions.

Whoever it is, I can't believe, now that this has happened, that they'll ever be anonymous again.

EDIT: It does scream viral but if so, it better be a seriously, impeccable charity or this is a PR disaster - could it be an art project?

They should remove her account, notify the authorities and hope her parents or someone intervenes (she is obviously young). What a shame she is so immersed in the "me world" that she can't think or care what something like this would do to those around her. She needs professional help obviously.

Mentally very young then....or so completely selfish it is still indicative of a mental issue.

Quite likely.
Then again, it is her life. She has every right to be selfish about it.

Naively assuming this is all real of course.

She did mention she had few friends and her family live far away, possibly indicating there's little contact. Then again, that may be her perception of it, it's very easy to construct very skewed views on who cares about you, especially when feeling lonely. If she's serious about it, then yes, she needs help.

Some of the comments are horrible, indeed. I might keep reading her posts just to see the development of it. Interesting social experiment, at least, similar situation to someone with a terminal illness I suppose but a voluntary ending. There's quite a bit of time to convince her otherwise.

[...] her comment that "as an atheist I feel life has no greater purpose" strikes me as phony. It sounds like what a religious person imagines that an atheist would say. Most atheists, I think, would say that they don't need a deity to have a fulfilling, meaningful existence... thank you, very much. Our relationships with other people and what we do with our life is what gives it meaning.

They may have a point. I don't recall ever hearing the phrase: 'As an atheist, I think...' from anyone.

Also, I think the whole thing is a little too well written and matter-of-fact to be genuine. Most people, even literate and well educated people, cannot write that coherently.

I don't know that the writing style is too much of an indicator. She probably also has a notebook of poetry that she'd be reluctant to show you but probably will.

The atheism thing rung a little false for me, too. Most of the time it results in a sense of, 'this is all you get, make the most of it.'

I guess you can feel pointless, but like what was said, that's usually a non-atheist's assumption of an atheist point of view.

Sounds good. If you need a hand just throw me a TG/PM. Also keep in mind that the power lists are a guideline and tend to be fairly flexible, and so I'd be willing to work with you to come up with a new power given an indication of what it does.

Weird. I mean, I hope she doesn't do it, whoever it is. A person committing suicide is a loss of a person who can empathise with other would-be-self-killers.

But there's definitely something... shall we say "sensationalist" about making a blog 3 months in advance. It's maybe a sad state of affairs that has led her to think making the blog might be useful, interesting or entertaining, but it's also quite cruelly exploitative in its passive-aggression.

I dunno. Maybe she just needs to be told firmly to grow up and get over her selfish anxiety, or maybe she could do with taking some time out of her current environment to find some sort of direction in life; both of which I would suggest whether the author's hoaxing or otherwise.

I have no knowledge of suicide, or how it works or whatever, but i've never heard of someone posting 90 days in advance, that's one well organised suicide.
I imagine if she didn't care about the world she go anytime she wanted and do a whole host of crazy stuff, then go.

It could be a trap, to get all the assholes who encourage suicide to post, then hack into their computer and effectively destroy it somehow. (as i've noticed alot of wankerish comments on that blog).
Hopefully she won't kill herself.

I was amussed that she said that because she was an athiest she feels she has no reason to live. Part of me thinks that this is some big religion converstion hoax where on day 87 she'll say "I found Christ so now I have a reason to live:):):):):):):):)" and expect everyone to be like "OMG I needz to find Gawd!"

Anybody suggest that she contact one of those cannibals who look for volunteer victims? That would be a pretty cool suicide.

But~ No sympathy for the suicidals from me, even less for the people who scream "OMG, totally gunna cut my wrists!!!11!!!"

Take everything on the internet with a grain of salt *shrugs* I've heard a lot of people 'kill' themselves in blogs. The stupidity of the people who believe them is what boggles my mind.

I don't know that the writing style is too much of an indicator.

Pop into your local newspaper and ask them if you can see a few of their latest letters to the editor (before they've been edited for publication). Say you're doing a project on standards of adult literacy or something. Bear in mind that these are people who have taken it upon themselves to write something, with a view to having it published. Chances are you will be appalled.

Another thing - when did you ever hear of anyone setting a date, three months in advance, for committing suicide? The whole thing is fishier than a penguin's breakfast.

If anyone looked at the site, you'll notice it ends on day 89, on wensday the 6th.

Um... wasn't it counting down?
