That's right, Planet Rock, the UK's home of Classic Rock is on sale or will be closed down. its a horribly sad day, as while the station had only been going for 3 years, i listen for hours a day, wake up to it, and barely turn it off at the weekend... i love that station :(

if anyone else in the UK likes their rock, check out the article here: http://www.planetrock.co.uk/Article.asp?id=580251&spid= (and don't forget to fire off an email complaining about it!)

edit: also here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7238768.stm

yeah most of them are available nationwide, but there's usually some regional offerings as well. plus many of the national stations have regional sub-stations (if that's the right word)

but Planet Rock is a proper national station.

we're switching over to Digital TV entirely soon, but it seems digital radio just hasn't taken off over here, and digital-only radio stations just aren't financially viable as advertising supported media.

you guys in america have fund-drives for your radio stations, right? we should do that for Planet Rock...

Ahh...okay. Yeah, we seem to be in a weird state of having both HDradio and standard radio...I don't see HD catching on that fast tho.

As for US funding, it depends on the station. Most of our stations are owned by private companies and rely entirely on advertising (Clear Channel is probably the biggest of these companies)

NPR (national public radio) is partly funded by fund raisers (about 1/3 of their funds). The rest comes from corporate ads and the like, and grants

Kerrang! is a midlands FM station, and a national digital station. They play rock, indie, some metal (usually in the evenings) and punk, etc. Alice cooper in the mornings is not an unusual occurence :P

Don't tune in pre 10am- the breakfast presenter, Tim Shaw, is an idiot. After that, all the presenters are pretty cool.

yeah, i know about Kerrang... i just prefer the mix of music they have on PR. no punk, no indie, just classic rock (Hendrix, Cream, Led Zep, Thin Lizzie, Rush, Flloyd, Yes, etc)

plus Alice Cooper is their morning breakfast DJ ;)

Kerrang may have to do in the future...

Haha...I don't even know what I based my assumption on, so you're a step above me.

And a show like his (iirc, a talk psychology show) would definatly be an NPR type thing...most commercial stations are music with shock jocks and DJ's

Damn Planet Rock is always on the radio in the hangar at the weekends. It always makes packing way more bearable especially when you have about 20 people singing along to the good bits

Well he was once... ¬.¬

Kerrang always struck me as a bit commercial and childish, really.

Video killed a radio star,
video killed a radio star,
in my mind and in my car,
countrywide we've gone to far,
do do do do do do do do.

Good one Call to Power.

Unlucky mate, it's the government, shutting down all the good music for their corporate scams, they don't like hippies that think for themselves.
Anarchy all the way!

Although I wasn’t ever really a fan (frankly, the partnership of Guitar Hero III and Planet Rock pumps out far too much classic rock into my flat for my liking), my flatmates will certainly mourn.

What about Arrow Rock as an alternative for fans?

EDIT: I just read the BBC article, and was rather taken aback.

I was very much under the impression (still am, actually) that DAB was really quite popular among punters nowadays. Wee portable DABs are everywhere nowadays, and DABs are packaged into loads of electronic products.
