Saudi Arabia sees red... or not

More silly shenanigans from everyone's favourite crazy fundamentalist state.

Saudis clamp down on valentines

Prices for black market roses are reported to be rising
Religious police in Saudi Arabia are banning the sale of Valentine's Day gifts including red roses, a local newspaper has reported.
The Saudi Gazette quoted shop workers as saying that officials had warned them to remove all red items including flowers and wrapping paper.

Black market prices for roses were already rising, the paper said.

Saudi authorities consider Valentine's Day, along with a host of other annual celebrations, as un-Islamic.

In addition to the prohibition on celebrating non-Islamic festivals, the authorities consider Valentine's Day as encouraging relations between men and women outside wedlock - punishable by law in the conservative kingdom.

The Saudi Gazette reported that some people placed orders with florists days or weeks before Valentine's Day in order to evade the ban.

"Sometimes we deliver the bouquets in the middle of the night or early morning, to avoid suspicion," one florist said.

Others were planning to travel to neighbouring Bahrain or Dubai to celebrate.

Saudi Arabian authorities impose a strict Islamic code that prevents men and women from mixing.

Women need a man's permission to marry, work, travel or be educated.

I wonder how a bunch of Mohammed cartoon valentines would go over?

must... resist... urge... to... create...

Oh, and on a mostly unrelated note;

"This Feb. 14th on the Western infidels' calendar, may all Americans receive no valentines from their beloved ones," bin Laden said. "May the homemade construction-paper mailboxes taped to the desks of the American schoolchildren remain empty, as well. May whomever you ask to 'bee yours' tell you to 'buzz off.'"

Bin Laden called for "romantic humiliation for all Americans of courting and betrothal age."

"Allah willing, embarrassment and tearful rejection shall rule this day," bin Laden said. "Paper hearts shall be rent and trod upon, and dreams of love delivered stillborn. Body language shall be misinterpreted, crushes unrequited, and sincere expressions of affection mocked. Invitations to dinner will be rejected, just as Americans have rejected Allah, the one true God."

And the funny thing about all this is that the world's most powerful country with an Islamic majority, Turkey, is beginning to celebrate Valentine's Day as global culture makes its presence more felt.

You gotta keep the people down, whether it be through litigation or using your religion as a rational, otherwise there may be a threat to your kingdom of oil and wealth as the masses may start wanting a better life for themselves....

But that's ok. America will always support its autocratic-theocratic oil rich ally in the mid-east...

From what I've read Turkey has a 31 billion USD arms deal with the US, that or its modernization plans underway call for 31bn USD. In either case they have a shitload more longterm assets than the Saudis. Industry, tourism, mining, and natural gas being among them.

well aside from the reasons for why the US is enemies with a number of nations being total bullshit, the Bush family has close business ties with the Saudies and they are investors in US defense firms not just sellers of oil.

Personally, I have always been a little confused as to why the U.S. is such good freinds with SA and enemies with Iraq and Iran?

Yeah, because the Iran Hostages were there just for kicks and Iranian gunboats shooting at US cruiser protecting unarmed US/UK/Iraqi merchant ships was a total misunderstanding.

Iraqi (saddam) running rape rooms and the like certain was a prince among men, not to mention the few American women and men tourists who were murdered/raped/tortured over the years was all a joke.

Now I am not saying the current war is right...but I understand (chris rock quote for the slow)

On a serious note though: it's a holiday about romance and love. Some of the best love stories came from ancient islamic writers, so what is wrong with showing your wife that you care for her in modern Islam? Just make it so only married men can purchase gifts for their wives if it is such a big deal.

This uproar has got to be a fundamentalist thing, hence why normal rational people do not understand the ban.
