Women + Weights

So many women (and men) think that if a woman does weights, she will bulk up and become the incredible hulk. However, free weights (and weight machines) are very useful in toning and contouring the body. Women do not have enough testosterone to bulk up, unless they're weight training every day, with very heavy weights, taking steroids and consuming well over the amount of protien they should. So...
What do you think of women doing weights?

incredibly sexy I would say though having a woman completely shattered isn't so fun
really I don't care :p
I think this thread is useless without pictures.

Why? Are you afraid the girl might be stronger than you?
I think it's a bad thing.
How long could we(men) keep women under the heel of our boots if they all start working out while we sit on the couch and watch boring sports programmes?

I believe you base your argument on a faulty premise: That women were placed on this Earth by God to help themselves.

How much does it really matter that they won't be bulking up? They're getting exercise, which is usually healthy, so it's good for both genders. That said I'm a guy and I don't lift weights... but I do use these things called "tension straps" that are KINDA like weights; though I don't use them very often...

Similarly with men it's fine and healthy up to a point where it becomes an obsession and repulsive to anyone looking at them.

I had a trainer for a year who taught me how to properly use them to avoid bulking up. There are some particular exercises that will bulk you up if that is your goal. I wanted a bigger bust but not bigger arms...it can be done.

An athletic woman is cool. However, you have to ask just how muscular one would become. If we're talking, say, a sprinter or an aerobics instructor, it's probably nothing. If we're talking Hellga from American Gladiators, it's probably a bit much.

Meh, I don't have an opinion on women doing weight lifting. I don't find muscular women attractive, but who am I to say what they should do with their body?
And if they use it just to stay in shape not to become like the woman in the photo, it's probably healthy and attractive, but I still don't see why a woman would need to take my preference for health and aesthetic preferences into account.

Afraid isn't the correct term I think. It is just ugly and most women don't intentionally do things to make themselves ugly. Don't forget women are women's worst critics. Btw I have a cousin who plays basketball professionally in Spain and she is bulked up, so are some of the gals in our fitness center. So yeah they do bulk up....at least more than I want to be. :p

How ironic that I log onto NS after a lecture in Gender and Politics, during which we mention biological determinism and social constructivism, and the first thing I see is this thread.
Anyway.
I'm very much an advocate of weight training for women, and that's proper weight training rather than the laughable compromise shoved down womens' throats (basically: take a weight approximating to zero, do a number of reps approximating to infinity, alternate with the odd sit-up that will MAGICALLY REDUCE YOUR BELLY FAT OH SHIT IT DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT). Besides being good for their overall health (and far, far too often the missing link within the stereotypical treadmill-hamster's routine) it's even actually rather complementary to many (though maybe not all) aesthetic goals (not least because lean muscle mass => increased metabolism => OMG YAY FAT LOSS).
I'm intrigued what the trainer of PelecanusQuicks had her do - guessing there was a significant role for chest isolation exercises (like flyes) in there?
Edit regarding her post: yes, women tend to be rather picky aesthetes regarding their own bodies (and it's when those perceptions become distorted that you get problems) and generally, their goals are focused with that in mind (it's not right, it's not wrong, but as far as I can tell it is true). It's all subjective, and I can't say I truly understand it; suffice to say, the fears are real, and even if we were to try and change them it'd take an awful lot of time.
It probably comes down, in many cases, to how people want to look in specific shiny garments... which in turn come in too many different styles to make that anything less than an individual affair.

I had a rotation of exercises to do daily with both machines and weights. For bust increase it was weights with a focus on not building up the back side of my arms or my back muscles. I'm no expert obviously I don't even know the muscle names or what the exercises are called, I just had a chart and a plan he wrote for me. I did what I was instructed and it worked well. He called all the stuff by name and explained to me all the respiration etc regarding each movement blahdiddy blah. Like I told him, you have the masters degree I have the cash...he asked me my goal in the original interview and I told him I wanted to look good nekkid. Which was meant as a funny, but in about five months I looked pretty good nekkid. :D It was hard work and it meant changing my diet and lifestyle but I never felt better.
I hired a trainer because I have had several surgeries on my abdominal and pelvic region and those muscles have been mutilated. I needed the guidance to not create problems in already problem areas. It was a great experience and I learned a lot about my body (even if I don't remember the proper names of things :p). A good trainer is worth the investment in my opinion.

I think there is far, far more pluralistic opinion amongst men over what is(n't) aesthetically appealing in a woman than the media might have you believe.
Differing degrees of muscularity is certainly a big area of divide. I can't say myself; I have little sexual attraction to either sex (to the point of considering myself asexual). But I can see the appeal in said basketball players - and also why they could be perhaps seen as ugly, which in that case may actually be subconscious code for 'threatening' perhaps?
I'm just wondering if guys find women like this ugly.
Sorry, women basketball players are way to big.

tbh I'm quite tall (but not freakishly) and I just don't find women taller than me attractive.

meh, personally I find -slender but not anorexia- women to be the most attractive, but there are more important things than the body type, even when it comes to the looks. A beautiful face for instance is way more important than the amount of fat or the hip-waist ratio or the size of breasts etc. (although it's probably even more complicated than that, but what about women isn't ;))

I started working out with weights with the help of The Fat Burning workout by Joyce Vedral, many years ago. (I did it for many months, until I got a full time job, and quit the workouts.)

The pic is her at 50, after starting the workout about 35 years of age, when she was getting rotund.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, if she wants to then she's not harming anyone.
And even when women do 'bulk up' and put on large amounts of muscle mass there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, if that's what they want to do then, sure.

Ugh... I'm not a fan of that, but an average woman would never be able to achieve that without steroids.
I think it's perfectly fine. Pretty much every member of my (women's only) gym does weights. I never realized it was a source of controversy before...
Quite a few guys (and girls) I know think girls aren't supposed to do weights. There are plenty of women who go to the gym and just do cardio or itty-bitty weights that don't do anything.

Ditto.
I am so sick of seeing girls lifting 10Kgs on the leg press and thinking that will make them lose weight. Number one, spot reducing is a myth. Number two, muscle mass increases your metabolism, just like you said.
I like doing weights. :) I can bench more than half the guys (and most of the girls) I know, and I'm not butch, I'm curvy!

I'm a girl, and I'm personally not a fan of the athletic-netballer-type look, but I definitely don't think it's unattractive. You can be fit, do weights, and still look "normal"... well, better than normal, because your body will be tight and toned.
