Obama's winning margins ranged from substantial to crushing.

He won roughly two-thirds of the vote in Washington state and Nebraska, and almost 90 percent in the Virgin Islands.
Yeah you go crush those other people Obama. Very diplomatic and all.:)

Her name is Hillary. Or since, we seem to refer to everyone else by their last name, Clinton. Or even Senator Clinton.

So, assuming Obama wins (a big assumption, I know), what’s going to change, in regards to both the US and the world in general?

Call me a cynic, but I don't see massive differences between most of the candidates.

And he's not that bad of a candidate.

Not very. Might want to compare the demographics, populations and delegate counts of NE, WA and LA to TX and OH, for example, where Hillary's money is.

"Wins?" Wins what, the nomination or the presidency? I'd bet Mac over Obama in the general election, but supposing he did win, it would be a matter of how he chooses to deal with the new Congress, and what it looks like.

Well, he’d have to win both to have any effect, surely.

Yes, but taking all these ifs and buts into account, what practical differences do you think I’m going to see between a Bush presidency and an Obama presidency?

Why?

McCain;s foreign policy is the same as Bush's, and will lead us into Iran, a Very Bad Thing.

Huckabee completely ignores the constitution, and will do his best to turn America into a theocracy, a Very Bad Thing.

Hillary is anti-video gaming, and her election will lead the Chinese government to step up it's aggression towards Taiwan, at least according to the Chinese businessmen I talk to. This could very easily lead to WWIII.

Again, why?

I like Obama's policy's the best.

Yes, but taking all these ifs and buts into account, what practical differences do you think I’m going to see between a Bush presidency and an Obama presidency?

Is that code for "Iraq?" :p Depends what upsets you about Bush to begin with - Iraq is the sole issue for most foreigners, along with (possibly) energy and the climate, which McCain is fairly 'progressive' on. Whether Obama's promise to retreat from Iraq will be applicable a year from now remains to be seen, with troop levels declining as it is. If there's progress over there, then his major differentiating factor over Hillary sort of cancels out.

It's not a case of my skin not being thick enough, seeing as I don't take personal offense. I don't support Senator Clinton in her bid for the Presidency. I, in fact, think she would be a really horrible choice.

But that doesn't mean I have to insult her. As I said, you can oppose without insulting. If you want to talk about having high standards, then act like it. You want moral superiority over your political opponents? Then be respectful whether you agree with someone or not. Don't be hypocritical.

I say the same about the insults pointed towards Ron Paul supporters. (I will admit I find certain ones, such as Paulitboro, amusing, but that's beside the point.)

The vast majority of us here are supposed to be left-wingers. We're supposed to be opposed to both the political positions of Republicans(and potentially Democrats as well, but beggars can't be choosers) and their tactics. Tactics like stressing Obama's middle name, or his name's similarity to Osama. Insults. Jeers. And so on.

Yet we do the very same thing. We make up terms like Bushivek, Billary Clinthulhu, and so on and so forth. If we are supposed to be better than that, why don't we FUCKING act like it?!

All (good) reasons for not wanting any of the above for President. But is Obama anything more than ‘not the above’?

I like Obama’s policy’s the best.

It could have.

Apologies.

This is what I'm getting at; plenty of people seem to be delighted with Obama and disgusted with Clinton, yet I find little difference between the two apart from superficialities. Obama is certainly more charismatic, but that hardly counts for much.

It was a nice blow though to them.

The link may stop working, so to make it simple, go to thomas.gov and do a search for bills sponsored by Obama. You can also search for votes on various bills there.

I would also recommend The Audacity of Hope for a broad view of the policies, but your apparent unwillingness to do even a cursory search makes it seem unlikely that you would bother with a book.

He was asking for the 'practical' differences between the candidates. Neither Obama's voting record or Sen. Clinton's are going to help much there (both quite short, and not a day longer than their presidential ambitions), and Obama's autobiography certainly wouldn't, especially to an outsider. :p

This forum is already miles more civil than most - not perfect, maybe, but it's a Sunday picnic compared to many others. The namecalling might not be helpful, but it's only coming from a handful of people from what I can tell, and it's usually nothing like the rage-inspired stuff you see elsewhere. The best way to stop it is to ignore it and make politeness the norm, I would think.

Heres the difference...

No one here is saying "Zomg we cant vote for Hillary Clinton because her last name can be changed into something resembling Cthullu!!!"

Dipshit right wing talking heads a'la Sean Hannity are saying we shouldnt vote for Obama because of his middle name (a clever ploy of Hannity's Im sure to attempt to hide the fact that the real reason he dislikes Obama is because he's black).

Do I really think Hillary Clinton devours souls? No...well...maybe ;). Its all in fun.

Pffft. You expect me to search!?! On teh interweb!?!?!?!

Seriously though, what’s so bad about asking NS:G for it’s opinions? Plenty of Obama supporters here.

http://www.ontheissues.org/Barack_Obama.htm
So, from what I can see, differences are:
support for stem cell research
opposition to the death penalty
close Guantanamo
nods towards gay rights, while placating the religious by leaving marriage alone
some awareness that the US economy is a bit screwed
possible support for free higher education
slightly friendlier foreign policy, but no major changes except Iraq
possible support for freer movement of labour/friendlier policy towards immigration
some provision for cheap/free healthcare for the not-rich
Apart from the first three, and obviously Iraq, it’s not exactly the same, but hardly massive differences; which is what he’s portrayed to be. Though perhaps that’s unfair. Maybe I’m taking a view that’s too non-American.

But: still in the pocket of big business; still harping on about terrorism; still increasing armed forces...

I would also recommend The Audacity of Hope for a broad view of the policies, but your apparent unwillingness to do even a cursory search makes it seem unlikely that you would bother with a book.
I’m unlikely to read a book with such a bullshit title.

The delegates are representing *party members* not the population as a whole. At the Republican convention, it is the blue states that don't get many delegates in proportion to their size.
