So Straughn finally got around to propagating the species with his spouse. Congrats to him. Now the question is. What should the child be named? Feel free to suggest names for a boy and girl and your comments about them. I hope he sees this it might give him ideas.

Boy: Mark
Girl: Josephina

Those are my recommendations.

Obviously you don't know me. Mark because Straughn apparently has a hard time hitting the mark. And Josephina is an inside joke...though Donna would be a funny suggestion to me as well...

Second trimester. ;) It's the second trimester you look forward to.

First, you have to get through the morning sickness, and by the third, I bet she'll feel so large and unbearably hot and uncomfortable in her own skin that sex will not be the first and foremost thought on her mind.

She says she'd trade morning sickness for the horniness *any* day. As in, *any day now*.
She also says that she can't understand a guy's sexual attraction to a woman who is, in essence, being more manly than womanly, what with the constant gas, lethargy, inability to wash clothes and other graces in appearance and accomplishment.

For all things good, gooey, and Elky, do NOT, under any circumstances, do any of the following:

name your kid with some sort of trendy name

name your kid after a family member

name your kid after any sort of movie/book/comic/whatever character that anyone else might know

pick a name that you have a previous attachment to another person with, be it positive or negative

make the 'meaning' of the name the main reason for picking it

choose a name unusual for the sex of the kid

choose an all too "peculiar" / outlandish / whatever name. If you really feel the need to do this, at leat have the decency and mercy to tack on an all-round normal middle name they can revert to.

forget that the naming is not a process intended to allow your wife+you to let your creativity and oh so quirky personalities run free and express themselves, but it's supposed to give a name to the child that it'll be able to live with comfortably. This is for the kid, not for you.

My parents tell me that having your child turn around and take another name than the one you gave to them is a very hurtful experience (and I can say the same from the child's perspective), so don't provoke it by doing any of the above.

name your kid after a family memberDitto.

name your kid after any sort of movie/book/comic/whatever character that anyone else might knowNot even Yossarian? :(

pick a name that you have a previous attachment to another person with, be it positive or negativeThis is all around good advice in most relationship circumstances. *nods emphatically*

Oh, this i know, i know. There's been some good advice about that here so far. :)

My parents tell me that having your child turn around and take another name than the one you gave to them is a very hurtful experience (and I can say the same from the child's perspective), so don't provoke it by doing any of the above.Like i was saying, as a kid i almost did the same for $100. I didn't though, since it occurred to me that people will nickname me whatever for whatever reasons, often for what i do. Same likely circumstances for the kid as well, which is why the middle name will be as important as the first one. :)

I have had a menagerie of pets before, and of course, some of the more interesting names have come up for them.

Congratulations!! I fear for the world, but still. Yay.

I haven't read the whole thread because, come on, really. Life is short.

I couldn't possibly help you pick a name without knowing your surname, because they really do have to match well, but I do think it is important that you NOT pick certain names.

In addition to the No Parental Creative Self-Expression, No Dead Relatives' Names, and No Weird Spellings rules, I also urge you not to pick any names that could be euphemisms. In addition to Finley (I agree, there's something suggestively vague about that), this would include names like Fanny, Dick, and Peter, etc. Also, try to avoid naming your child after famous pains in the ass, because names have a way of enforcing their own destiny on a person. Also, please don't pick gender neutral names, for the sake of others. Gender neutral names are a major annoyance when trying to address a business letter, having nothing for reference but a business card that doesn't show a Mr/Ms by the name. What is the salutation supposed to be -- Dear Mr/Ms/Sir/Madam/Other?

And whatever you do, don't be like my uncle Fred, who fathered a whole tribe and named them all after characters from Wagner operas. I'm not kidding. Don't do that.

I was going to propose something similar in a light-hearted manner, but thinking about it, just plain Straughn is actually a realistic sounding name. As long as he (or she, it would work with a girl almost as well) never found where it comes from, he/she will probably be happy with it.

There's this odd inside story that only a few posters know about this particular issue, that maybe i'll go on about at some point.

Given his posting style, I think the name Link would be apt.Heh. Weird how i kept thinking of video games when i saw that ... then i was on another thread doing just exactly that, and figured it out. *duh*
Also - wifey and i watch Prison Break :p

I've always liked the idea of naming a boy Plato - I'd like to be called Plato. Not a bad one at all. First thought was Ira Plato from NPR, second was Beetle Bailey, neither of which are bad connotations at all. :)

For a girl, with my keen sense of the prevailing future fashions I'm going to recommend: Mathilda.Fashion? Tell me more. My wife has been watching far too much of that lately.

I doubt that guy is a puppet. Sadly enough, really.

i liked the way Corny did it better. At least he had a maneuver named after him. *shakes head*:p

It is true. Not lying for dramatic effect. I don't know how many people had bets going. My dad says he never thought i'd be able to be cool through it, but i sang Jeff Buckley's "You & I" to her that day, and he said he'd basically lost all his doubts about me. I told him it was good that he doubt, for through the right process, it would steel his resolve. :)

20 eBucks says it's "Reinhardt" or something along those lines. I'm always amused by people who desperately need some sort of 'meaning' in their name and will feel oh so much better knowing that they're not jus named "Schmitt" and that's it, but oh no, their name is an old derivation from the smith!

Buh? Since when is it not?

It is, doll, it is, just as "hardt" is "Herz" and all that crap. I don't contest that probably most of our surnames come from some 'meaningful' moniker or the other, I just like to mock the people who feel the need to find that meaningful root in their name no matter how far or deep they have to dig, just in order to show their 'meaningful name'.

;) Way to dream big dreams, man.
I've always planned that my kid will be an unlikely hero who is thrust into a crusade to avenge me when I'm taken from him by raiders/space aliens. Throughout his harrowing journey into a strange new world, audiences will laugh, cry, and learn valuable lessons about life. He'll come to my rescue just as the pirate ship/Death Star is about to explode, and we'll forgive each other our past wrongs, and I'll tell him that I can't go on with him, and that he has to carry on my legacy. As he leaves me behind, the audience will be reminded of the symbolism present in father/son relationships, and movie reviewers will try to keep their eyes dry- but to no avail.
Then, during the celebration, I'll appear as a Force ghost and high-five him, saying: "You earned it. Let's have a beer."
Cheerful music will crescendo, the camera will fade out, and the credits will roll up.

...

At the least, I expect him to get a job when he turns sixteen.

Whereas, of course, you're iconoclastic, and have a singular title such as "Cher"

I don't contest that probably most of our surnames come from some 'meaningful' moniker or the other,Good, because you would lose that contest.
I just like to mock the people who feel the need to find that meaningful root in their name no matter how far or deep they have to dig, just in order to show their 'meaningful name'.And the funny part is, you're soliciting your "important" opinion about it, on all things, a thread about names!
Show some class. There's a few different reasons why i posted that, none of which are out of line nor really meriting a superficial approach such as yours. You can go back to your own nom-de-nihil now and feel free to give mockery elsewhere.

EDIT : Just noticed your sig, and in light of that, i would be well advised to take everything you say as equally meaningless, so for certain no one should take you more seriously than yourself. :p

No, no. It's a strong, dynamic name.

If you're not keen on Trevor, you could make it Johnnylicious, Katelicious or Chloelicious for example. Framboise = raspberry in French & Xcalibur was King Arthur's magic sword. A name like that will bring prosperity & good fortune to anyone who bears it. It will open many doors for your child. :)

No history really, Chutney is just a relish or sauce. I just think it's a great word that has never been used as a name - but kind of sounds like one. Sounds like a character in a Harry Potter book. It would be a good name for a chubby English schoolboy.

But then again, I am legally insane in most countries. So feel free to disregard the suggestion.
