Just a thought

Anadyr Islands

I've always wanted to live away from society (not civilization, though... I do like the arts, medicine, etc.) because I've come to feel that all the modern world has become a self-supporting system where a person's happiness is a not the paramount goal in one's life. Furthermore, it isn't even a system that attempts to be fair or ideal, but almost coldly pragmatic.

Wouldn't it be an interesting idea if I, with a group of like-minded people, took to living somewhere relatively rural, like a tropical island or something, outside the rule of arbitrary governments and a failing world? I realize Lord of the Flies comes to mind, but like I said, this is assuming people on the island must be those of good character (which I think is indeed subjective but generally fairly easy to sort out) with a small population. All the beneficial advantages of the modern world ( electricity through solar generators, etc.) could be brought there but without the problems like money and all of that. People who are born there can leave at anytime, if they want. No official religion and legal organization based on small-scale communal discussions and meeting to settle problems. Kind of like John Lennon's Imagine. :)

Quixotic, I know. But, one can always wonder. I'm probably going to have half the forum telling me what an idiot I am quite soon, though. :D

I have the same thoughts, but it just isn't truly possible in today's world, nothing is separated or private anymore. This island you're suggesting would have to be some obscure Pacific island that no country really keeps an eye on. Good Utopia idea, wish it could work, but it's not probable.

Tiny isolated groups like that don't seem to have a good chance of working in the long run. For example Easter Island built these really cool stone heads, but they chopped down every single tree on their island to build those heads, and without trees their ecosystem and society fell apart.

Tikopia. Its an island about a mile long, and people have been living there for thousands of years.

To the OP:

That'd be fun! I wouldn't want to live on an island though, and take out the electricity. Then we'd be getting somewhere.

I think I would rather just be a crazy old hermit. Less aggravation that way.

You're most of the way there now (you just need to add the hermit part)

Frankly I can't blame you for feeling this way, what with modern civilisation seemingly losing its head lately.

Modern society is becoming so festered and rotten that I'm beginning to wonder whether it's better to burn and start again.

NB: I am not condoning terrorism.

Can we have it in the mountains instead of on an island? Mountains are nice and secluded too! :)
