Iran has opened a new space centre that will launch its first home-built research satellite, saying the inauguration marked another step forward in its battle against Western dominance.
A rocket was fired into space at the remote desert centre in northern Iran to mark the event, the second time the Islamic republic has attempted to fire a rocket into space.
"We witness today that Iran has taken its first step in space very firmly, precisely and with awareness," President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said as he gave the order for the launch.

This seems good, after the turmoil of the revolution and the war in Iraq, one could be forgiven for thinking that Iran would leave scientific development behind.

What the hell does that have to do with "Western Dominance". Can't be of space, because Asia is already there. maybe he just likes to make every policy a war against the west.

Apart from China, all space activity HAS been Western nations, pretty much, and I'm pretty sure they lump Russia with the west.

I still don't get why Russia is usually considered a Western country, it is pretty much in Asia.
It should at least get its own continent, they can even call it Russia. The precedent was already set by those damn Australians with their own continent.
Edit: Japan has also gone to space, they just did a very poor job.
No doubt it was liberally bathed in Uranium and stuffed full of nukes and other goodies. For the children.

Sad thing is, stuff like that has happened. I think a good deal of experimental rockets and such, or satellites with nuclear generators on them carried large amounts of radioactive(obviously) substances to power them. When they fall back to earth eventually and re-enter the atmosphere, this radioactive waste gets sprayed over large regions of land. Which causes all sorts of issues for the people living beneath the "spray-radius".
Because culturally they are closer to the west than to Asian countries.
Actually the USSR was a very multi-ethnic nation just so you know.

The CCCP, yes, but Russia itself was much closer, culturally, to the West. Furthermore, most of its population was congregated--and still is, as far as I am aware--in the European part of the country.
That's not to say that there is only one ethnicity in the country, but it's not as widely varied as the CCCP was.

Iran is a powerful nation and culture. Persia had one of the leading empires in the world. This is not at all a surprise. If anything, it help legitimize them more with their nuclear program. Maybe they really are just looking for scientific progress. Why do we want them to stay in the past, which we always criticize them for? I applaud and congratulate Iran.

Okay in order:
1: You killed my emoticon.
2: Culture doesn't determine what continent you're in, its purely superficial lines. And even so, to label it the West still doesn't make any sense, unless we are using culture to determine what hemisphere people are in.

Not really. But as I said, most of the population of Russia is congregated in the European part of the country.

You asked why they're considered a western nation; I told you why, it's not my problem if you don't like it.

Well I think I've thread-jacked enough and we'll just leave it at that.

Yes, I am aware of that... It would have been better stated as their rulers have been culturally closer to the west

Great, now they'll start getting into orbital weaponry and aim it at all the western nations. :(

Is it scientific development, or is it something else, a cloak, perhaps, for a long range offensive missile program, mayhaps? After all, the US and USSR used developments derived from their space programs in their ballistic missiles, (and vice versa). After all, the R7 and Jupiter rockets were what they both used to loft their first satellites...

Maybe the US can use this as an excuse to give NASA a substantial funding boost! :D
Would be awefully nice. NASA deserves a shot in the arm.
