Super Bowl Prediction!

Dalmatia Cisalpina

I just want to see the Giants destroy the Patriots.
The Patriots are full of themselves, they cheat, and I strongly dislike their bandwagon.
Just kidding, but it would be nice to see them not be perfect. They're not the '72 Dolphins, even if they win the Super Bowl today. Besides, didn't the Giants come moderately close to beating them late in December?

EDIT: Timewarp for the win!

So tonight is the Super Bowl between the Giants and the Patriots at Arizona! Who is going to win?! Make your prediction right here, right now!

I think the Pats are going to win 33 to 30. They're going to win by one Field Goal in OT.

Um no. no and no. We go into Sudden Death Overtime in which one team has 15 minutes to score. If no one scores at the end of those 15 minutes, we go to another Overtime Quarter and keep going till there is a winner.

However, no super bowl has ever gone into Overtime and I am not expecting it to happen this year.

I think they've actually screwed with the rules so that there is some nightmarishly complicated overtime scenario.
But you're right, we won't see it. Patriots 42, Giants 24 or something absurd like that.

I get the distinct feeling AFC dominance will continue with a patriots romp of the Giants. (I get the feeling Eli wants to get out of his brother's shadow so much, it'll haunt him after 'this' game is done with.) Plus the Patriots have had too long to prepare, even more than they need for a Spygate bit. =^^=

35 - 10 Pats.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has laughed off Plaxico Burress's prediction that the New York Giants will beat the Pats 23-17 in Sunday's Super Bowl, mocking the Giants wide receiver for picking such alow score. "We're only going to score 17 points?" Brady chuckled at the Patriots' morning press conference. "OK. Is Plax playing defense? I wish he had said 45-42 and gave us a little credit for scoring more points."

Lol - how many laughs can you see in one paragraph?

Touchdown Giants! Burress completely flumoxes Ellis Hobbs with a clever route and finds himself all alone in the endzone. Manning doesn't miss and the Giants are 30 seconds from a huge upset.

To be honest, most of the commercials were trite and predictable, poorly written, and poorly executed. Many of the jokes fell flat and were out of place.

The three commercials that really stood out were the one about Chester Pitts, the floats in Manhattan, and the Jack-in-the-Box commercial with the swingers (Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah, let's make a jack sandwich! --- how they got away with that one, I don't know, but it was fucking classic).

You know what this makes me think about?

Michael Vick. Total opposite of Eli Manning in terms of playing style and attitude.

Vick had nothing but apologists and hype for his entire career. He got selected by a better team and his biggest accomplishment was beating Green Bay at home in a wildcard playoff game that they gift wrapped. People acted like he had won the Super Bowl.

Manning has had nothing but critics for his entire career. He got picked by a much inferior team and much inferior line and he not only beat a much better Green Bay team in the NFC championship in worse conditions, but managed two outstanding drives to beat an 18-0 team that they were heavily favored to lose.

Vick's in federal prison and Manning is the Super Bowl MVP.

Of course the differences were always glaring. Manning graduated from college with honors and Vick left ASAP with a piss poor academic record.

Vick was never anything but a runner --- his arm wasn't hyped, it was overhyped, being that he could only manage to lob it about 72 yards in the Quarterback Challenge (keep in mind that John Elway could launch them 91 yards, yet everybody kept insisting that Vick's was the strongest arm ever).

Mikey would've served himself much better being a Halfback or Wide Receiver, though it's unknown whether or not he could train himself to catch passes with any rate of success. Oh, and the whole criminal activity thing would've likely been a problem anyway, so it's probably all moot.

He won a shitload more than just about everybody else, as his record stands at 147 regular season wins. Okay, actually, Dan Marino wasn't far behind, with 146. But they were both pretty far ahead of Joe Montana, who had (if I remember correctly) 122 regular season wins in eighteen seasons. And don't forget that John made it to five Super Bowls and won two, back to back.

I never said that Eli was another John Elway. I just said that he was shadowing him there at the end, and he definitely was.

And while I know it's not quite the same thing, I have no qualms about a popular snack food being called a 'cracker'. :p

That's somewhat different, seeing as whites were never an oppressed minority and the slur was based on the food.

But then you know this and are making a joke because of it. Rest assured I do have a sense of humour. I just usually don't when it comes to racism.

Right. :p

Anyway: back in the real world - I was pretty happy to see the Giants take it. Manning's last drive was pretty kickass, especially that off-kilter toss the receiver caught against his helmet to keep it alive for them. I was glad that working 'til 6:00 tonight didn't keep me from enjoying the last 10 min of the game, and that those last minutes were the most important. I had pretty much counted on missing the show, but things work out sometimes. :)

Redskins is offensive eh? Normally I don't care when something offends someone for the sake of laziness, but now I don't care for the sake of hating nitpickers.

i predict there will be or has been such a contest, whatever the hell it is.
i predict i will not/did not watch it.
i predict i would have been quite joyously unawaire of its existence or at least its timing and contestants, had not this thread brought its existence to my attention.

i predict i will now blissfully return to not giving a rats ass about any such contests in future.

How can it be a slur if it's not negative? The word itself does not conjure up negative imagery (I doubt most would hear "Redskin" today and think about anything other than the football team, let alone having a negative thought), and a sports team name is supposed to be positive, something you'd *want* to associate yourself with- certainly the Redskins didn't pick the name with any intent to be malicious.

If you're going to complain about "Redskins" you might as well complain to Michigan State about "the Spartans" and Southern California about "the Trojans" since those names could very easily offend the Greeks.

Was it just me or did the Patriots go into the game thinking all they had to do was show up and they'd win? Seriously, who goes for it on 4th and 13 down by three points and in field goal range? Also, did Tom Brady have any other play except a deep pass in the last 30 seconds of play with all of his timeouts? Not to take anything away from the Giants- they played phenomenal- but I do think the Patriots just as easily lost the game as the Giants (and Eli Manning) won it.

Everybody catch Patriots #72 yelling "FUCK!" ?
Classic. If it ain't Janet titty or Bono saying "fuck" in one context, this one certainly works out well :p

I completely agree. I think the Patriots let the whole "They're going to win the Super Bowl" go straight to their head.

Eli manning is no Jonh Elway and NO he did not win all the time.

John Elway didn't win all the time. Just ask the 1982 California Golden Bears (college).

Try calling a Native American a redskin. You'll see then that yes, it's pretty fucking offensive. You can also piss them off by calling them "Injuns."

Maybe "redskin" is not quite the level of "******," but it is certainly as offensive as chink, gook, kike, wetback, spic, beaner, wop, or mick.

"Spartans" and "Trojans" aren't offensive because they reference specific nations. Redskins, on the other hand, was and still is used as a racial slur. That's why it's offensive and names like "The Illini" and "The Seminoles" aren't. The latter reference specific nations, whereas the former is a pejorative.

Since this is a discussion (I think) for another thread I'll just leave my opinions at this and that's it. Anyway, I understand "Redskin" was commonly known as a pejorative in the 18th and 19th centuries and can still be known in that regard today, but I think the only people who know it's a pejorative are Native Americans, their friends, families, most likely people who deal with them and anyone else who's bothered to look it up- overwhelmingly, for most North Americans, they only know it as a nickname for a football team. Its use as a pejorative has been so disused (and its use as a nickname for Washington's football team) for such a long time that the meaning of the word won't be associated by many with anything other than football. I mean, it's not like Dan Snyder picked the name today or even a decade ago- the Redskins have been so named since 1933.

Besides, word meanings change- perhaps, since a sports team name is supposed to be positive, "Redskin" can become positive as well (if it hasn't done so already).

(I realized I made a mistake in my previous post...the Patriots were up 7-3 facing 4th and 13 on the Giants' 32, not down three...anyway)

You know, "going for it" on 4th and 13 at that point in the game is something I do in Madden 08 when I'm frustrated my drive didn't work in that particular moment of the game. I mean, yeah you could argue the Patriots' offence was video-game like anyway, but you don't win unless you're grounded in reality, and there should have been no shame in collecting three at that very moment- it would have made the score 10-3, perhaps put New York on its back foot a little (maybe forcing more mistakes from Eli Manning) and, at worst, if the Giants get a touchdown they'll tie the game. The decision wreaked of, at the very least, frustration (if not downright arrogance) and certainly didn't indicate a team (or a coach) that had been to "the big game" once or thrice before. You don't try "kick-starting the offence" in the Super Bowl- you do that in Madden, the preseason or, at the very least, a meaningless regular season game. The stakes are just too high for a blunder like that.
