What If...?

WHAT IF....

...on midnight 2000 when everyone was celebrating the new millennium New York City vanished. It was thrown back 500 years to 1500. Everything and everyone in New York vanishes. This includes Geosynchronous satellites, planes and anything else within NY.

How does this effect the US government? How does this effect 9/11? But most important of all how does it effect the New Yorkers transported back 500 years?

A couple of notes:
The US gov will receive the part of Staten Island that NY covers now from 500 years ago.
NY will just be transported back 500 years, it will not be moved.

I believe a variation on this was covered in a sci.fi. novel by a man named, if I'm remembering correctly, Stirlling. The modern world didn't notice, largely because the amputated section of the US changed history.

If it was thrown back to the past, then it could hardly come as a surprise.. People would have 500 years to anticipate it being thrown back. I bet the people 500 year ago would be mildly surprised though.
Smallpox and starvation would kill off a good deal of the new yorkers not bright enough to have left the city.

does time split or do we cease to exist due to the fundamental change of history?

'Island in the Sea of Time', is Stirling's book. It's about the Isle of Nantucket disapearing to about 2000 BC or something like that. What happens is that the people on the island, plus one naval vessel offshore, have to try to find a way to survive without the massive infrastructure of the late 20th century. The Islanders later expanded and influenced the rest of the world to create a completely different world.

However, a seperate series details what happens back in 'the original timeline', when Nantucket changes places with it's 2000 BC counterpart. A 'change' occurs throughout the world that destroys humanity's ability to used most modern technology; essentially anything that relies on a chemical reaction or combustion. In that series, the reliance on modern technology and infrastructure backfires and causes a worldwide famine, and such.

Cool books really.

Errr...

You know that it wasn't even there 500 years ago, right?

It was only built by the Dutch around 1610, officially settled from 1624 onwards, and wasn't particularly large until the 18th century, as it was basically just a place for people to collect beaver skins and castoreum.

If we went back 500 years, you'd have a couple of thousand Indians around, and not that much more.

If it was sent back 500 years, there would be thousands of changes. Nobody can know what would happen because if that did happen, then everything now would be changed...and...and... Well, none of this would have ver been thought of, heck, the US might still be colonies of Britain!

NY will just be transported back 500 years, it will not be moved.

one possible outcome would be that New York would be the capital of the USA.

the indians would probably be slaughtered beyond recovery since they would view NY as the work of evil spirits and the amount of weapons still left in NY would still do it's work.

once the situation is fully realized, alot of changes would be made. including the reforming of the constitution which now doesn't exist. one can only wonder what this new consititution will include. Perhaps making Chrisitanity the Nation's Religion, or banning all weapons altogether. we can only speculate.

however, with technology jump started with what is in NY... America would be a tech wonder. if they work on it, they could keep that advantage, can you imagine the damage that would do?

given that the New USA would know about the other countries, but they won't know about us, we would definiately have the advantage. add to that should they actually find fuel substitutes as well as have a naval fleet and submarines...

They would have 300 years to carve out their nation which could mean that Canada could possibly not exist as well as Central America and parts, if not all, of South America.

if they do manage to keep their fleet (they could have a fleet of steam powered Ironclads) then Britian, France, Spain could also be part of the USA.

in truth, the possiblitites would be myrad, both good and bad, and the cycle would continue when the technology advanced NY is once more transported back to the 1500 when they once more, get to 2000.

Nonono. You misunderstood. It's not that we go back in time to the place where New York City currently exists, but we send the actual city itself back in time.
