I was inspired to do this by a similar thread on the Star Destroyer. net forums.
Since most people always seem dissatisfied by the academy's choices, and have there own favorites, which films do you personaly think should win, and why? Or do you just think the whole concept of movie awards shows is readiculous?;) Please post which films you think should win what, and say why if you feel like. I'm a film student, so I'm very interested to hear what others think.

I'm going to say the only ones I feel confident about are Ellen Page for best actress in Juno. She was amazing, both in the sincerity with which she portrayed her character and also her impressive ability to make me forget she was acting. In many ways the actors in Cloverfield did much the same, except that they had a much easier time... most of the time they just had to be normal, or running like freaking crazy. Nothing else that I've actually seen this year has stood out for me... I imagine that'll change once I see Sweeny Todd though. I'll think about it.
EDIT: Oh, and Ratatouille for best animated feature. I did like that film a lot.

I've heard good things about that one with Daniel Day Lewis (the British guy who played the retarded Irish kid in that one movie - pretty good actor) but it's not on PirateBay yet, so I haven't seen it.
However, I did see the one where the dude was popping people with a pneumatic cow-killing bolt gun, which was pretty kickass. I'd vote that up for Best Picture. :)

The Daniel Day Lewis film is "There Will Be Blood", the other is "No Country For Old Men", which I saw. I seem to be one of the few who didn't like it. There just didn't seem to be any point to it.

Yeah, those titles sound right. As for "No Country," it might not have a "point," in that it wasn't a morality play in any meaningful way, but I thought it was outstanding as a movie - although to be honest, I've always been a fan of the Cohens, and I suppose Blood Simple and Fargo also lack a "point," really, even though those are often considered great movies. Either way, I'll say, without spoiling the ending, that the movie certainly broke with a lot of the standard Hollywood storylines that many of us are used to. :p

Before I forget, I'd also like to see the Polish movie "Katyn" win best foreign picture, because no video rental near me will have it otherwise, since I recall reading about it in history class in high school and I kinda wanted to see it. Not sure if it deserves to win, but the trailer looked pretty well-done, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWPIleYTjB4 .
