Scientific proof of no global warming this year.

It's official. There is no global warming this year. The great Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow Saturday, leading the groundhog to forecast six more weeks of winter. Obviously scientific proof that there is no global warming this year. :D

Ok, so do you think Phil is right and we will have six more weeks of winter, or is he full of it?
So far this year has been up and down here in Oklahoma and the forecast for this week is more up and down. Monday it will be about 70 degrees F and plunging down to 30 degrees on Tuesday, then back up into the 40's and 50's later in the week.

Naw uhh, there was global warming and Puxsutawney Phil stopped it with his magical groundhog powers. Groundhogs can do those things, you know.
Dosen't the global warming theory say that the earth's climate will increase in temperature over decades or hundreds of years? I think the IPCC's report said like a 7 degree increase over the next 1,000 would be a worse case scenario.

So what its all a bunch of over exagerated crap. Yes, man has had some effect, but We are in the space bewteen Ice Ages. I mean come on. Think about that. The earth has cycles, it goes from cold, to hot, to cold, to hot, to cold. I am not denying that we have affected it, but not only are we in the space between ice ages, we are fresh off a few hundred year long mini-ice age.

And tell me, who gathered the information that allowed you to make those statements? Who were the ones who studied climate enough to explain the idea of cycles and what have you?
Climatologists.
So why doubt how they interpret their data now? Why accept only so much of what they say and dismiss the rest?

My boss, not knowing that i am quite familiar with the drastic climate change issue, started bitching about the cold yesterday (8 degrees ... as compared with last weeks' 45 degrees) in similar fashion, and said he'd buy a lawn chair for any "global warming believers" to sit out in the balmy weather in the parking lot. I said i'd do it, and pointed out me and a few friends did that one winter a while back while i was in college. He didn't take me up on it. *shrug*
Tragically enough, he's got eight different photos of polar bears on his walls in his office. :(

It may be what we've seen here many, many times ... they misinterpret a statement until it seems to say something that they already agreed with ... and they don't bother reading the rest, because they feel they're already educated - what with it reflecting their opinion, and all.

Are people actually ignorant of the idea that an overall increase in global temperatures can have many different effects on local climates? That global warming might be the case, and some areas might become rainy rather than warm? Or very cold? Or very dry?
I think we should get rid of the word "global warming" and use "global climate change" instead.

Are people actually ignorant of the idea that an overall increase in global temperatures can have many different effects on local climates?
Yep, it would appear so. Whether they're genuinely ignorant because they've never read or considered any of the myriad reports and peer-reviewed papers that exist, or are more wilfully ignorant as a result of cherry-picking the little bits and pieces of data that appear to confirm their own stance on the subject, is another question.
I think we should get rid of the word "global warming" and use "global climate change" instead.
Yeah, that would be nice. We've been trying, but it seems that the whole "global warming" schtick is too far ingrained in peoples' heads. Perhaps it's because it makes it easier to build jokes around.

Or...
Pollution?
At its base that is what it is. It's good, old pumping pollutants into the air in vast quantities; it's dumping toxic chemicals into water systems; it's clearing entire environments from forests to river systems; it's driving entire species into extinction.
No one can argue it's a good thing to heavily pollute the planet, to so drastically alter our ecosystems; and no one can argue that we shouldn't lessen pollution.
If we pollute less, concentrate on efficiency over waste, that can only be a 'good thing'© - it has the added benefit of alleviating climate change while making the debate over - to what extent we're changing our world - irrelevant.
The debate should be about ways to pollute our planet less.

We're actually already at about the warmest it's supposed to get in Earth's cycle. So, yeah, the fact that it's still warming up, at an increasing rate at that, is a bit of a problem.

That's a pretty tame worst case scenario.
"The earth is covered in 1000-degree hot, really angry Komodo Dragons with jetpack feet, the sea turns into a mass of liquid nitrogen, also the sun blows up in our collective face"
