Tax refunds are essentially change. Thats like buying a $1 piece of candy with a five and then going "OMG I got paid $4!"

yep.

Tax time. or for me, Tax Refund Time!

so... I just mailed back my forms and I figure after setting aside some, I'll have a lot of money to spend.

Last year, I bought a DS and PSP (and a shitload of games for both). and have been happy since then.

so this year, I am pondering what to buy.
A larger setup for my soon to be realized crayfish farm?
A next gen console? and if so which one?
A new computer system? (tho I am happy with mine)
or something else...

what would you spend a grand on? :D

Tax time. or for me, Tax Refund Time!
F**k. I knew there was something I was supposed to do this month (the UK Date just passed).

Oh well. I probably only got about £100 or so anyway.

Anyway, on topic, all my money these days is going on rent, food, books and air travel. I'm not exactly poor (my inheritance comes into effect once I've finished my degree, which should clear off my loans) but I'm not exactly financially secure either. So that $1000 would go towards funding my year off, which I'm very much looking for.

Its basically the same for Canadians to. I am expecting allot back this year (5 grand). I am going to put it towards either a car or computer. Depends on how much I make this year.

I usually get a tiny refund (less than $100) but this year by design it was cut even closer so I owe the IRS $7 I intend to pay it as soon as I send in my return, so that I don't incur any interest or anything like that :p

My state return isn't so predictable, so I have to give it more leeway, I am getting back about $600, it will be split evenly between my children and put into their "I want to buy something useless and expensive while we're on vacation" fund. :D

I think you should go on a vacation.

:p I was just thinking he works really hard and needs some down time, with $1K he could probably have a lot of fun....or stay somewhere nice and sleep for a while.

alcoholic candy floss. What an idea! genius....pure genius!

As for tax refunds, we don't get them here in HK. But then our max tax rate is 15% and that's for earning over ~$USD26K /year. Under that, first $13K is tax-free, next $13K is max tax of $900USD.
That said, they did give a tax rebate last year due to their burgeoning surplus. I got ~$2000USD (1/3 of my tax bill). This year they're expected to issue another one, but this time up to (and perhaps more than) 50% of one's tax bill.
So yeah, some times I really like living and working here in HK.

I just finished my taxes today. (thank God for computerized tax programs.)

I'll get back $1,559.00 from the feds and $1,307.00 from the state. :)

The bad news is I paid;

$11,716.00 in federal taxes.
$3,029.00 in state taxes.
$3,312.78 in Social Security taxes.
$774.76 in Medicare taxes.
---------------------------------
Total taxes paid are $18,832.54 :) and that doesn't include property tax, sales tax, gasoline tax, etc.,
etc. :(

And what really sucks is the roads and bridges are worse this year than last year.

Oh, the refund will go into savings and be used to purchase our retirement home. :)

Have more taken out of your pay each pay day. Why not loan it to the feds.:p

Looking at your location, I'm surprised you didn't have to pay more. Don't you folks in the Big Apple have to pay a city tax on your income?

Yes, that was $1,416.67.

thats what I did. I figure, I give more to the Gov then I don't have to worry about scrambling for the money when I gotta pay.

I do enjoy a good weekend of tax refund-blowing. My tentative list:

Movie Tickets (haven't been to one in about 5 years)
New dissection trays (good steel ones, not plastic)
New guitar strings (again, it's been about 5 years)
Gas money

That about sums it up. :)

I'd spend a Grand on putting it in the bank.
If that wasn't an option then i'd buy lots of food.

I foresee that this will soon degrade into a : "if I had $1k"...

But...I'd buy $1000 of pudding. Pure chocolate pudding. You should do that, too...
