Is Resident Evil 4 as scary as the rest?

I was playing Resident Evil 4 today, and even though it IS a good game, I really don't think it's as scary as the rest. I mean sure some of the creatures are spooky, and the atmosphere is creepy, but I think it's more of an action game then horror. Part of the problem is probably the camera angle ( Over the shoulder instead of a creepy fixed angle), but I think it's more than that, instead of jumping out at you they just shout and swarm. I remember in the first resident evil, you'd be walking down a hallway... SMASH! A zombie grabs you! The closest thing to that in this game is the camoflauged bugs who sneak up, but the music still gives them away. Thoughts?

Scariest game I've ever played is System Shock 2.

I can't get past the second level since those ice throwing monkeys just freak me out way too much.

*shudder*

I've always considered the Resident Evil series more action than horror.

Maybe the later ones, but the first ones were undoubtable horror.

Fatal Frame series is much scarier.

the start where you massacre a village is freaking insane after that its just another shooter with the odd "omg headcase with a sack and a chainsaw who can only be stopped with a shotgun!" moment

well there are other siege parts which are also good however these are rather far apart and more a case of lobbing grenades out windows and down stairs

Same, yeah. They tend to work on shocks rather than horror as such. Silent Hill was always rather better for horror, though it's down to yourself which one you'd prefer to actually play.

Even the first ones. because to me, if you have a gun, it's not that scary. but if you don't...

those are, without a doubt, horror.

No. RE2 is probably the scariest game because the zombies just come at you out of nowhere. Plus there's this one part in one of the RE2 dungeons where hands suddenly grab you through a boarded up window if you walk past, which is a good scare. XD

Or when a zombie dog thing jumps out at you through the mirror. Nothing like that in RE4.

I think the first one is much worse. Walking along lalalalalal-OH GOD! (Decapitation) :D I love that. Oh, and the horrible acting.

The general consensus among fans is that it doesn't count as a Resident Evil game, but I've only ever played RE4 so I wouldn't know. I never really got scared though, I jumped a few times when I got attacked by dogs but that was about it.
