Pointless, all radio and television broadcasts already leak into space.

Now, what other songs should NASA share with the galaxy?
My first choice: The Rolling Stones, "2000 Light-Years from Home".

Yes, but they are unfocused and thus loose strength and turn into static in the limitless static of the universe.
This, even being a waste of money, has the possibility of making it to Polaris without fading to static.

I can see the headlines now:
Beatle Mania hits Uranus!
And this is how the earth is destroyed! Aliens are going to be pissed off that we are sending some horrible sounds, and they decide to come to earth to kill us all to make it stop.
Thanks a lot NASA!

I do love Paul's reaction to it.
"Well done, Nasa," he added. "Send my love to the aliens. All the best, Paul."

No. Nobody disses the Beatles on my watch!
Besides my vehement feeling that they're quite easily the greatest band ever, seems like NASA should be broadcasting something more techno-popish...

Unfortunately a new calculation by SETI indicates that our signals degenerate into mere static noise within two light years...so our Beatles soundtrack won't even reach the closest star...

That might be true if NASA had beamed Ludacris or 50 Cent or some such (c)rap. With the Beatles, more likely they'll be coming here to find out how we created such excellent music ;)

It is now evident to me: NASA are official morons.
Why don't they do something useful? Like breed cockroaches or test the effects of 0 gravity on pea plants?

I've always been of the opinion that, if aliens are to come into contact with human music, the first thing they hear should be Aretha Franklin. I don't care who you are, that's gonna sound good. You only get one chance to make a first impression, after all :D

Erm i know my knowledge on Space-sound travel is limited, but i thought sound can't travel in space as there's no sound in it at all? So why bother playing music to space? is it something to do with radio frequencies that can travel in space and could be picked up by possible radio transmitters?

BEM's need music for their iPODS as well.
That's why. NASA is trying to be the Napster for Aliens. ;)
Radio waves can travel through space. it just degrades the farther it goes.
how do you think images from the probes get back to Earth?

I suppose the probes could deliver a canister containing the microchip the photos are saved to, then fire it towards earth when the right trajectory comes along. Or the probes could use a certain type of light that could contain information that could be transmitted across space, maybe?

That's if the signal is going out in all directions indiscriminately. NASA is sending a tightly focussed maser beam that should disperse much less.
The "Pioneer" spacecraft was carrying a Chuck Berry recording, but it would require incredible luck for any alien to intercept the craft.

Other songs-
Astronomy Domine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M-UtlpvBWk) Pink Floyd
Space Oddity (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D67kmFzSh_o&feature=related) David Bowie
Major Tom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1Hs2AQwDgA) - Peter Schilling
and, of course...
William Shatner's version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvQwXOCKNLY&feature=related) of Rocket Man...
Of course this might give them the impression that our space men are not very good at space travel but are very introspective about it, but I think that might play into our hands...
