Wow... just wow. It must have been easily a year since I last had Gummibaerchen, and what can I say? Somebody must have been fiddling around with the recipe.

The white ones used to taste like pineapple, now they taste like honeydew melon.
The red ones used to tase like berries, now they taste like grapes.
The green ones - well, the green ones are back, after having been declared extinct nearly two decades ago!!! But they're no longer tasting like Waldmeister, they taste like lime now...

What's going on there?

I know that in the US Haribo Gummibaerchen come in raspberry (red), orange, strawberry (green), and lemon (yellow). How strawberry got assigned to green, I don't know.

Strawberry? Green? Wow, that's weird.
No, the green ones have always been Waldmeister, my favourite. Now they're lime and I don't really care for them too much any more :(
I would have understood if those were Irish Gummibaerchen, but it's a German pack...

Oh, dear.

Yeah, I, for one, smuggled about five pounds of Gummibaerchen back home with me last time I paid a visit to D-land. Deliciousness! My sisters were astonished. I knew the glory, though, because throughout my time as a student of German, we had a steady stream of real Gummibaerchen coming to us from teachers.

Our Latin-teacher usually spent all his lunch break in the shop round the corner from school comparing Gummibaerchen bags to find the one that had the most red Gummibaerchen in it.
When we left school, we bought 20 packs, and put 5 bags of solid red Gummibaerchen together for him. :D

(if you look closely, you'll notice there's two types of "red" now)

He searches my face for news of his fate. His expression is echoed in scores of tiny faces pressing against clear plastic - panting faces of every imaginable colour, creed and non-Aryan origin fogging up the bag like the windows of a Polish bathhouse. *ugh* I stumbled naked through the ruins back towards blander, less complicated confections leaving in my wake a trail of rainbow carnage. You guys have absolutely no clue, especially you, Cabra. That's what you get for emigrating.

Here's the factual Gummibär-brief for all of you:

Up until 2007 (when the Gummibärchen celebrated its 85th birthday), they came in five colors (red, yellow, white, green, orange) with the respective flavors raspberry, lemon, pineapple, strawberry, and orange. (Yes, this means the green ones were never absent from the mix, wherever that strange rumor came from - I ought to know because I'm one of the few who always pick out the green and white ones first because I adore them above all the rest. That, and they've never been Waldmeister-flavored).

Since recently, they added a new color (light red; I personally find it very hard to distinguish from the other red but it's there if you have good lighting and are looking for it) which took over the strawberry taste from the green ones, and the green ones got reassigned the flavor of "apple", which I must say is most excellent.

That, and they also altered the face so that they are all smiling now, but I guess nobody notices that, even with good lighting.

It's been so long since I've last had a Tüte Gummibärchen - I don't even know how they taste like anymore.
