Web disrupted 'across Mid-East'
Internet services have been disrupted in parts of the Middle East following damage to an undersea cable in the Mediterranean, according to reports.
There was disruption to 70% of the nationwide network in Egypt, a government official told Reuters.
There was also disruption in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, reported the Associated Press.
India also suffered up to 60% disruption, a national industry body told Reuters news agency.
The Internet Service Providers' Association of India blamed a breakdown in an international undersea cable network.
One Indian internet service provider, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL), linked the problem to the Egyptian disruption.
Egypt's Telecommunications Ministry said it would probably take several days for internet services to return to normal following the disruption on Wednesday.
Emergency teams were trying to find alternative communication routes, including satellites, AP was told.
The ministry's Rafaat Hindy said: "Despite this being an international cable affecting many Gulf and Arab countries, we are closest to it and so we have a lot of responsibility.
"We are working as fast as we can."
'Degraded performance'
In Dubai, one of the two internet service providers (ISP) was completely down, reported AP.
An official at the provider, DU, told AP that a fault in a cable between Alexandria, Egypt, and Palermo, Italy, was to blame.
Both DU and the state's other carrier, Etisalat, said international telephone services were also affected.
In Kuwait, the Gulfnet International Company apologised by e-mail to customers for "degraded performance in internet browsing". (:p)
Saudi Arabia users complained that the internet was slow or totally down, while there were complaints of slow services in Bahrain and Qatar, reported AP.
so it appears the middle east will soon descend into utter anarchy! I'm already hearing very reliable sources of carts pulling horses and complete stability in Iraq
so I ask: how do you survive when the internet is down? I personally get drunk and have to deal with all those people who have done things with their lives instead of posting on NSG
or I watch television (in that watching crap way people used to do before we had cables which in my world means keeping up appearances repeats)
