So, I'm having an ABBA period, as I tend to every year, and I'm interested which of the following ABBA songs (my personal favourites in no special order) is the most popular:

Summer Night City (http://youtube.com/watch?v=5ZQ6b9Y-8lg)

Dancing Queen (http://youtube.com/watch?v=7GFpMb0sOaw)

The Winner Takes It All (http://youtube.com/watch?v=xK3mVxGfzPY)

Eagle (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Zjznl5WiFm8)

Voulez-vous (http://youtube.com/watch?v=5JDy1GltVLQ)

When I Kissed the Teacher (http://youtube.com/watch?v=SXpzPWwEFOI)

S.O.S. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=5jThpp-M-Tw)

Happy New Year (http://youtube.com/watch?v=dcLMH8pwusw)

Super Trouper (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR6H-LfKOpk)

Or perhaps you have your own favourite that didn't make it on my list?

While directly translated it is correct, we don't use it that way. "Ok, sötnos" would've been more Swedish.

That depends on whether or not you're treating ABBA as a singular group noun or a plural noun referring to the members of the group. If it's the latter, you're right. However, with the former it would be "ABBA rules," not "ABBA rule."

Typically, though I'm not sure this is strictly true, group nouns are treated as singular nouns. For instance, one might say SPS (the Society of Physics Students) did this or that. One might say that members of SPS do this or that, using the plural tense of the verb.

I'm going to plump for The Winner Takes It All.

Mostly because I'm a sucker for pretty ballads, and because too many other ABBA songs are written in an infuriatingly wide range thus meaning I can't sing along.

(He says, as The Wizard And I fades out... can't much sing along to that either, doesn't mean I won't try...)

Your assumption is wrong as far as I am concerned. Helloween did a couple of great Abba covers, and there has been a couple of Heavy Metal albums devoted to Abba covers by various bands. Therion covered 'summer night city'. Sinergy did 'Gimme Gimme Gimme'. Custard, yes a silly name for a band, covered Super Trouper. Spiral Tower did Chiquitita. I could go on.

ABBA was Swedens contribution of 70's bubble-gum pop, and therefore just as shit as any other band offering the same thing, from anywhere else. The only redeeming factors are mediocre song hooks, and decently done harmonies. I give proper respect to anyone who can make a shit-ton of cash doing something like that for a living, however. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it.

But it isnt particularly well written, nor is it musically spectacular.

and for the record....it would be "Fernando".

Corny? Cheesy? Almost vomit-inducingly sweet and sugary? Yep, a lot of the time ABBA match all of these. However, there's no denying that ABBA were, without question, the best at what they did and anyone who refuses to accept this is either in denial or has never actually listened to the songs and is just going on hearsay.

I treated ABBA with contempt for years, and then I married an ABBA nut and the pretence of contempt that I'd shown towards them just evaporated. I rarely choose to listen to them these days, but they're certainly worthy of attention if you happen to be in that sort of mood.

Oh, and Chiquitita, probably. Hard to pick one.

The Winner Takes it All - hands down.

I always think I like Fernando but when I listen to it, I don't.

Dancing Queen, I suspect, is the best song to be honest but it's too overplayed for me, The Winner Takes it All sounds fresher.

Or perhaps you have your own favourite that didn't make it on my list?

You have awful taste. Obviously, Summer Night City and Happy New Year are incredibly dreadful; Voulez-Vouz scraoes a close pass; Super Trooper and Dancing Queen are meh-ish heard-most-often choices, and When I Kissed the Teacher doesn't count because I don't know it.

You get bonus points for leaving out the abomination that is Fernando, but lose it immediately due to your failure to include "Does Your Mother Know", "I Have A Dream", "Take a Chance on Me", "Honey Honey" and "Name of the Game. (And, I must admit, the heard-most-often choice Waterloo - have you ever sampled the German version? Talking of which, have you ever lived through the German "Wer im Wartesaal der Liebe steht", which receives brain tumor points solely based on the abhorrent title already?)

If push comes to shove and I absolutely must decide, it's probably, in descending order:

Take a Chance on Me
Honey Honey
Does Your Mother Know
Name of the Game
I Have a Dream

...rest.

P.S. I forget Money Money Money! Shame on me. Tough it's not good enough to make the top five, it'd probably be in the top seven. And sometimes, but only when I'm in the mood, I'll appreciate The Day Before You Came.

I have spent the past day or so, since i first saw this thread, trying to decide exactly which of their immense repertoire is 'actually' my favourite. It is a very hard decision.

'One of us' is definately in the running, as it probably echoes the sentiments which led to the end of ABBA. The music is, in my opinion, 'timeless' as it does not really fit into any particular era.... and the lyrics are quite haunting too.

Gimme, Gimme, Gimme... This upbeat little number was always one of my favourites. When it was used as the title theme for the short-running british comedy series of the same name, it suddenly became popular again amongst a generation who had probably never heard it.

'Take A Chance On Me' is another that I like, but ironically I prefer Erasures cover. (probably because i actually owned Erasures version before I owned ABBAs version.)

In short.... curses upon you for making me dwell upon this difficult choice. I may have a final decision in a day or two.... or a week...
