Most shocking event in a video game (SPOILER ALERT)

What would you name as the most shocking event in a video game that you have experienced?

For me, there are two that stand head-and-shoulders above the rest. The first is the boss battle in Halo 3. I did not see that coming!

However, the prize has to go to the finale of Half Life 2: Episode Two. Admittedly, I haven't actually played Episode Two due to graphics issues. But since I own the Orange Box, I feel I have a right to know what happens. And the death of Eli Vance was one of the most shocking events I have ever seen. His last words, the horrific manner in which he was killed, and the fact that his daughter was watching, helpless to interfere, made this an unforgettable death.

I hope the advisors meet their punishment in Episode Three. And that punishment should take the form of Gordon holding them paralyzed with the Dark Energy Gravity Gun while Alyx beats them to death with a crowbar.

That was well done. The dialogue was well done, and it was... I was watching and it was no doubt way out of left field. Completely unexpected, and definitely well done. It made the story much more interesting.

I respect that they kept on theme with that this is a fight and not all fights have a happy ending.

Most shocking moment? Realising just how much chaos one can cause when playing free style in Elder Scrolls Oblivion and GTA: San Andreas. :) Woohoo! CARNAGE!!

OMG AERIS DIED WAAH.

If this was about the event that most shocked me in a video game, I would have to say the AI malfunctioning in MGS2 and the discovery of what I had actually been working for. I don't think I have ever been quite so thrown off-balance as I was when at 1am I get a codec call telling me to turn my game console off by this heretofor supporting character.

The most shocking event though I would probably give on reflection to the revelation of Raziel's identity as his own wraith blade in the finale of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2. It's come out of nowhere, and yet is clearly the result of a series of carefully orchestrated lures on the part of the now immensely-powerful Moebius, writing in stone Raziel's unavoidable destiny to get absorbed by the very thing he relies upon to change it. Brilliant bit of theatre there.

I kind of expected it really. Dog only ever runs off when there's something that needs procuring, or if there's something that needs destroying. We already had transport, so it was obvious that the latter was going to occur, with much grief in between before he saved the day.

Kinda reminds me of a time I was playing Swords and Serpents. the book said I needed at least one wizard to complete the game, so I made a team of 4. two fighters, one thief and one wizard. I played all weekend, non-stop.

Monday Morning... 12:00 a.m... final level... wondering why my wizard was dying so quickly and moving so slowly...

so I checked his stats...

from pretty decent stats at the start, he went down to
spd: 1
Att: 1
Def: 1

so basically, a level 1 monster would hit 3 times and kill my wizard before he even moved.

Well, not really shocking, but definitly surprising. My first time ever playing Halo online:
I step outside...and three seconds later, I get sniped in the head. It was just like "Cool graphics-" and then my SPARTEN goes flying with blood pouring out of his head. I was like WTF?

AERISDIESLOL would be in the top of the list, but then again, to people who played long enough to experience The Oregon Trail it's not too shocking. I mean, your American Pioneer era family died of dysentery,... if that's not too shocking for a 10 year old kid, I don't know what will. Resident Evil (the original) also introduced horror shocks to video gamers. (Phantasmagoria? The atmosphere didn't quite set)

Maybe so, but even then, Dog's playing was heralded by a swarm of camera bots, explosions, and Combine troopers. I mean, seriously, when Dog shows up, it's almost always as a harbinger of doom to come or doom just smashed.

Call of Duty 4, when the nuke goes off. How many other games have the balls to kill off the player's character like that? You are leaving the city by helecoptor, thinking you're safe. Suddenly, the nuke goes off and your chopper comes crashing down. Soon, you're crawling around the wreckage. 30-seconds later, you're dead.

Oh, yeah, that. That sucked. To me it felt like the programmers were showing how worthless all those missions were. 'Hey, remember all those times when you cowered behind a dumpster with enemies all around you and prayed for your health to recharge? Well, it doesn't matter, because you're dead. Oh, and everything you did in that city? That also doesn't matter, because it got blown up. Nyah-nyah!' I was expecting to play a mission later in the game where you woke up and had to escape from the ruined city.

I'm 3 scenes into F.E.A.R., so there's a share of moments right there...freaky-ass little girl.

The twist in KotOR was obvious as soon as you reached Dantooine. Master Vrook damn near tells you explicitly. Looking back I'm surprised I was fooled as long as I was (and it wasn't very long).

Most shocking? Hmm. Tough one. Being sent on that suicide mission in TIE Fighter is the only one that stands out right now. "Show us the superior maneuverability of the TIE Interceptor" my ass...

Me too, was kind of disappointed when you didn't. The game was pretty good overall, though. Popping the hostage-holder in the head and seeing "20G-Mile High Club" come up on the screen was very satisfying.

My most shocking moment was playing GTA: Vice City, and I was doing one of the missions you get from the phone calls, the one where you have to kill some mom or something.

It was while I was doing it that I kept hearing her voice screaming "Oh my god!" that I realized that I was murdering someone, and I backed away, quit the game, uninstalled and deleted it, and nearly formatted my harddrive.

I've never touched a GTA game since.

I think the number of people who've experienced this one is really really small, so gather 'round kiddies.

The Neo Geo game Aero Fighters II-two player mode, Steve and the Ninja. We where playing this game on free play in the lobby of the movie theater where I was a projectionist (time on my hands...). If you play through the game twice, something we just decided we were determined to do, you get a unique ending.

That ending? Steve rips his clothes off and professes his love and lust for the Ninja, who slices him in half.

Swear to fucking god. It took minutes to get our jaws off the floor. The only reason there wasn't a murmur about it I imagine is that we where among the few that even bothered finishing that game, much less in that combination.

My friends and I had a contest, sometimes when a prone zombie would grab your leg, the character would kick the fucker's head off. We awarded points for the most impressive/longest kick. I think the winner was one that rebounded off of a few walls down a narrow hallway.

Sorry sir, we attacked the city like you ordered but then they started shooting arrows at our helicopters, we couldn't evade in time and they blew up our entire squadron. That and the fact that Mao is a real jerk...

My choice for biggest surprise in a game is the moment you see a berserker for the first time in Gears of War, even if it isn't a hard boss.

3 words from Bioshock: Would You Kindly
WHO SAW THAT COMING!?!?

They did that so damned well that when you play the game you never even think about it, but when you replay it you actually notice just how many times he said it.

For those wondering what we're talking about:

throughout the game you're being guided by radio message from a "friend" who turns out to be one of the villians in the story. He often suggests you do things, prefacing as saying "would you kindly" do this, "would you kindly" do that. It is revealed at the end that your character actually has a hypnotic suggestion built in, and "would you kindly" is the trigger phrase to get you to do what you're told, and that every time your "friend" said "would you kindly" he was manipulating you
