Would you emigrate to another country?

I'm unsure.

Positives for emigration (IMO):

- Greater feeling of freedom (however I suspect that this would diminish quite rapidly as time progressed)
- Better climate
- Lower cost of living
- Reduced cost for my favourite hobby
- Change of scenery and interesting differences in lifestyle

Negatives :

- Distance from family. I've tried being as emotionally independent as I can from my family but to be honest it just made me realise I quite like to be around them
- My girlfriend has a very close family and I don't think she could cope with the distance of seperation
- I love the landscape of my home area
- It's hard work
- It's stressful

(for this i'm assuming I would be moving a long way away)

Yes, yes I would. Specifically Canada. It's a lovely country and I have relatives there.

In my younger, more naive days, my answer would have been Japan. That was until I realised how xenophobic Japanese culture was. It would be very hard for me to emigrate and live there on a permanent basis.

Probably not, as if things got really bad here, I'd be interested in trying to set it right, by hook or by crook.

Yes, if there was a good enough reason to do so. Since my line of work should in theory be possible to do from home over the Internet I've been playing with the thought of moving to some really cheap country while still working for a western employer with western salary level. Then I could afford a small mansion for what an apartment in a central location costs here, doubt I'll actually do it though.

If the need for me to emigrate were to ever arise, for example, my optimum choices include a return to my ancestral homeland of Switzerland (Niwald or Schwyz Cantons), hit up Belize for the tropical weather, or a perceivable retirement to a pleasant stretch of Mediterranean or Aegean coastline, perhaps in Greece or Italy. Maybe even a Greek isle, a nice small one.

Edit: And New Zealand too, I could do New Zealand.

Most certainly not, seeing as how I positively love the United States of America. I do, however, plan to travel to foreign countries, but only to visit interesting places and learn of foreign cultures firsthand. Regardless where my international travels took me, I would always come back.

I would specifically like to visit England, Japan, the city of Hong Kong, and maybe France and Germany.

Well i've got the perfect solution for you, move to a country where they hate foreigners too, you'll get on in a house on fire, i mean like a house on fire.

Personally i'd like to move to another country, but i'm wondering yes it would be a change of scenery but it would be quite a lonely venture that would end up with me out of cash and probably out of luck, that and i'd miss my family. I mean sure Britian is relatively safe place and it's easy to get to know where things are and it's a nice landscape but it can be quite (erm how can i put it?) suffocatingly similar throughout the country.
So to conclude my brillaint analysis i have no idea.:).yes.no. erm don't know. maybe.yes. no maybe not. yes a great change. hmm i dunno.................

Have you ever been to another country?

Nope, but, at the risk of sounding arrogant, I can pretty much assure you I'd make my way back here, regardless where else I went.

My experience with foreign countries has, thus far, been speaking to persons living in those countreis, etc... Second-hand, but fairly effective. Notice that in my post, I expressed a desire to visit several countries.

If it makes you feel better, I will confess that, given pressing reason, I would maybe give consideration to leaving my home in the USA and settling permanently elsewhere, but it is not likely.

Bah...the Italian part is not really as attracting to immigrants as the French or German parts. It's not as economically important and doesn't really offer as many jobs, in reality. It's not anywhere near as common for immigrants to come to the Italian parts than the French and German parts. Honestly, I beleive the French parts have the most immigration...they are much more lax over there and "progressive" where as the German areas are muccchhh more conservative. Also, many immigrants speak French and not German, so they go there. It's not THAT common to see Blacks in the German cantons, but it is in Genf, for instance.

Seing as there are more sheep than people, they are statistically more likely to be getting around. Also, blame the Welsh immigrants for that one.

I've strongly considered:

Canada (short term, because I can hitch hike there if the US goes completely down the drain - gay marriage and a diverse population is also a perk, as is the fact I wouldn't have to learn another language)

Brazil (long term or permanently - because nobody hates Brazil, the men are sexy as hell, the language is beautiful, and it's probably the best compromise between comfortable, stable, economically developed and non-imperialist. at this point it doesn't seem to be getting fucked or be actively fucking over any other countries)

United Kingdom (again, they speak english, there's a shortage of social workers, a huge Indian population which bodes well for me as a vegetarian, pantheist, and somebody who wants to learn Hindi...and the history buff/snob in me could tour castles and do genealogical research to my heart's content)

Spain (short term - I plan to go after college, to polish my Spanish and to get experience teaching English as a Second Language, while getting a chance to see europe)

The girl that I presently have a crush on is in Japan, so I would consider moving there just to chase after her.
well that's a fool proof plan, nothing could go wrong with that.

Indeed.

Dubai.

Hmmm... It was my impression that Dubai really only wants cheap temp workers...

Switzerland I could do, as well as New Zealand, and Australia as well. Maybe after retirement. :)

Switzerland? If you are an educated American with money that brings something good to Switzerland, Swiss immigration policies favor you. :p

Just learn some Swiss-German

unless you speak French..in which case....meh French sucks. :p

That sounds good. :)

what about pork?

a japanese aquaintence of mine worked in saudi arabia for a while and the lack of booze and pork drove him crazy. he tried (unsucessfully) to smuggle both into the country whenever he had the chance.

Reminds me of a student (also Japanese, of course) who used to live in Iran and had the same trouble with booze.

how are women's rights there?
Fun fact: apparently Jews aren't allowed to come to Dubai.

It's in many ways a very backward place. The Arabs themselves live according to the usual strict rules. Rich foreigners are tolerated and largely left alone. Poor foreigners are basically seen as subhuman. The racism runs strong in that part of the world.

i live in the u.s. and i'd really like to. the problem is, one of them, i don't know if the country, kind of country i'd like to move to even exists, and if it does, well there probably isn't any good reason they'd let me in, plus i'm not worth a dam with languages, which kind of limits me to canada, nz, gb, and oz. parts of canada and parts of nz i know i'd like at least as much as where i am now, but i'm pretty much too old to be starting another life in this body in this lifetime.

there's other places that wouldbe couldbe shouldbe even closer to what i'd like, except they speak different languages, are even less likely to let me in, and its only a matter of time before some loonie in the u.s. has its army outside of their tents pissing in, unless some myrical happens first.

Negative. I love America to much to ever leave it for good.

I'm to use to all my Constitutional rights to give them up in any way. True, the system doesn't always work like it should and it has it's moments (more like decades in some cases) where things are/may be worse than they use to/should be, but it seems to balance out in the end.

Though I suppose if I was going to move to another country, it would be Panama. Beautiful country; beautiful women; beautiful climate (i love warm weather), and the cost of living is amazingly cheap.

Oh dang. That reminded me of something but I can't remember all of it. When I was quite young, some neighbors moved to Saudi. i remember they either couldn't bring a couple of major appliances (fridge and dishwasher IIRC) or had to remove the brand names because the company was Jewish owned - I think it was Sears, but I'm sure that's not correct.

He naver said anything about immigrants, more about why the whole world came to his country. Granted, the troops in Iraq are only from a handful of countries, but I think it might still seem overwhelmingly multicultural after the decade of total isolation...

I'm not sure why he thinks it's abhorrent (assuming the poster is a guy), but i can think of a few good reasons.
Boring dull and depressing weather.
Too many old people (i don't personally have anything against them, but there's something about when you see a group of them moving like the undead that strikes a little fear in me).
The negative attitudes of soo many people here is astonishing (i have to admit i'm guilty of that one too).
Limited places to go out and socialise (unless you own a car have lots of money available).
Overpopulation of cities.
We have the House of Lords, most of the MP's in the House of Commons move in upper class circles and are rich (not representative of the population).
A general low morale of people i've met on my travels, high house prices.
And an inability to get worked up about anything political (from the people i've met).
Alcohol is the main way to socialise, few other options.
But there is one good reason why Britain is good, i live in it, and anywhere i go it's already a better place.:)

No. I like the right, as a native and as someone who was born here and didn't get a choice in the matter, to complain like hell when the government does something stupid. Like introduce compulsory ID cards at the same time as losing a few million private and confidential records. Like claiming that those records would have been protected by some magic biometric secret sauce if we only had the ID cards up and running already. Like introducing a national identity database that reaches further than anything the STASI ever had, putting all of your data (not just your child tax credit data, or DVLA data, like has been lost so far) into one hackable resource, and anything else this collective bunch of bastards might like to think up next.
