After 31 days, my iPod breaks

How the f-ck did that happen? Does it randomly destroy itself in cold weather? Did it decide to off itself while in my pocket? Either way, I'm pissed that I have to use the warranty for the damn thing a month after I got the damn thing. So, NSG'ers with hatred for their iPods, enlighten me, how many ways can an iPod break? So I don't have to bike to the mall to fix the damn thing again.

If it's just a case of not turning on or freezing, hold down the centre button and then the down button together to reset it.

That is, you press the centre button first, then the down button while keeping the centre button held down as well.

I'm finding it hard to say this correctly :)

Well, let's see here.

The screen could break, making your songs audible but invisible.

The click wheel (if you don't have an iPod Touch) could break, trapping all of your data within the iPod with no way to access it without a computer.

The hard drive could spontaneously reformat itself every time you tried to copy on a song.

All of your songs could be deleted for no good reason except that Apple screwed up.

You could drop the thing from too high up, causing it to physically break into several pieces.

The little connection thingy on the base could break, preventing you from either recharging the battery or plugging it into your comp.

It could spontaneously combust or suffer sudden massive existence failure (SMEF).

Need I go on?

It's clearly a testament to your taste in music that it killed itself. *nod*

My last iPod broke. It was a hard drive one and I dropped it with considerable force on the ground and it died at once, unsuprisingly.

I now have an 8 gig 3g Nano that seems indestructible, since it has survived even more traumatic incidents.

Read somewhere that most ipod failures occur in the first month..so..:p

Mine had the LCD discolored due to heat after I kept it in cars in Florida summer :headbang:

And then I lost it in the plane.. <more of :headbang:>

I got one of those for Christmas. The thing's an absolute miracle compared to may last MP3 player, a 256mb dinosaur. Works like a charm, haven't had any problems yet.

My iPod Photo bit it last spring. My own fault actually, I fried the hard drive. Had it for well over a year, not a single problem. Just waiting for a larger capacity iPod Touch before I buy another.

I've had mine for 3 years, nearly. And its ink stained, scratched and the click wheel is a bit dicky, but still going strong. The only time I ever thought it was broken, the battery was so dead that it didn't display the battery dead message, or switch on when charged (for a while). Maybe that's your problem?

What sort of iPod was it? I wouldn't buy any MP3 player which uses a hard drive.

Solid states can go only upto 20 GB (IIRC). Until they find a way to pack more gigs, there is no choice but to go for a HDD based bigger memory.

I was smart and got a warranty that lasts a few years on mine, mostly because when your iPod breaks it has to be sent to California

not that this helps you but I do like to poke fun (though I do feel like a giant sheep and the only reason I got it was my PSP broke)

I now have an 8 gig 3g Nano that seems indestructible, since it has survived even more traumatic incidents.

I've always wondered why anyone would need to have 8 gigs worth of music (and if your particularly lame maybe movies), I can't even fill 4 gigs up :p

How the f-ck did that happen?

Put it into the iTrash and buy a cheaper non-i equivalent.

Im sure I read somewhere that iPods are designed to break down after about a year so you have to keep buying them, but that could be the paranoid ramblings of a cheesed-off iPod owner.....

sounds like a book title there to me...

Never got an Ipod. Got myself a Creative MuVo a couple years back... hasn't broken yet!

i had a Creative Zen which lasted about 5 years before i dropped it down the stairs... my heart falling with every loud *smack* as it bounced down every single step :(

the HDD died pretty bad after that. all the other MP3 players i've owned have lasted pretty well though :)

I've been using an 8Gb Nano for a while, and I actually find it a little annoying not being able to get more on it (it's at about 1600 songs atm).

Having such a vast range of music available is great, and I'd hate to have to go back to anything with less capacity. It means that you can almost always find music to fit your mood at any given time and, as a bonus, it also offers up a the chance of some truly freakish sequences of songs when you stick it on 'shuffle' during a train journey - Nina Simone segueing into Metallica and then into some early Rush is a playlist that I can't see anyone ever actually picking, but it sure made me giggle like a loon when it happened earlier today :p

8gb 3g iPod Nano. It suddenly died when I was walking home and now doesn't turn on/charge/anything.

Oh, and LG, you're one to talk about musical taste :p

I think Solid State Hard drives will replace mechanical ones. Toshiba have a working 32Gb SSD, and they are working on bigger ones.

Speaking as a Jewish underwear gnome, I claim full responsibility for this event.
I've had my iPod for a couple of months now, and it hasn't quit out on me, despite all the horror stories. My advice: stop throwing it at walls. That helps. (I assume, of course, that's what you're doing.

I have a video iPod. I've got a couple movies on it along with 5 days of continuous music and it hasn't filled a tenth of my 20gigs. ;)

Sweet.

My 20Gb Zen Touch (http://regmedia.co.uk/2004/10/28/zen_1.jpg) comes in real handy; especially as a great secondary storage device.

Cold weather=very short battery life.
