With all of this deep and complex political discussion going on in the NSG boards, and the fact that its nearing lunch time and I'm quite hungry, I've gotten to thinking about salads. This brought about the question for all of NSG, or at least thouse of you who will read the posts of a lurker who spends his time in II. What do you all like in your salads? Just leafy greens, or something more meaty? What about salad dressing/oil? What do you all think?

I love Radicchio, but you can't get that anywhere in Ireland :(

Other than that, my favourite combination is butterhead lettuce, cucumber, spring onion, baby tomatoes, red pepper, diced cheddar and sliced Wiener sausage.
With a really simple vinaigrette (just vinegar, sugar, salt, water and oil).

Now my favourite ice cream sunday is...oh hold on
Now my favourite Salad has to be one with lots of cucumber, leafy things and a few tomatos, not too many tomatos mind because they can taste quite orrible on their own. I also like mayonnaise on my salad with some well salad cream too, eggs go nicely with it. But i can't abide salad without some good soup to go with it and some cheese sandwiches too.
But here it's almost tea time, never mind lunch, i had some rather nice chicken and noodle soup, fired mushrooms and onion in cheese sandwiches.
Lovely. mmmmm salad.

I love salads that are just the leaves with ranch or french salad dressing, cheese, and bacon bits. Yeah, I know, it's unhealthy, but it tastes so good...

A small salad with ground beef, ketchup, and two large round soft croutons. Something like this. (http://www.photo-select.net/images/products/030401001-Hamburger5.jpg)

That's one hell of a salad, how do you make time to make it though?
I haven't heard of artichoke hearts, and what's a julienned carrot? What's pimiento?

Pics coming up, once photobucket cooperates. Will edit them in.

Artichoke hearts are the very tender insides of the artichoke -- it's usually a jar full of tiny ones that have had the outer tough leaves stripped, and are just the soft tasty bottom and the inner tender leaves, marinated.

Julienned carrots -- sliced into thin sticks or peels.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v260/Katganistan/juliennedcarrots.jpg?t=1201455592

Pimiento -- roasted sweet peppers. Manzanilla olives often come stuffed with them in the jar; you can also get them stuffed with garlic, jalapeno, or pearl onions.

It's really not much more than rinse, tear, slice, peel, and open bottles or tins; I generally do that for a sit-down dinner at holidays rather than as a "What shall I have for lunch today" thing.

Crispy lettuce, mushrooms, artichoke hearts, sometimes peppers, and always some sort of meat (usually turkey). I always go for the italian dressing, as well. The sort of salty sort of sweet really works well. All together, it makes a simple but delicious salad.

What do you do, have one piece of everything?

Personally, I go for something simple involving crumbly cheese, various leaves, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, all in pitta bread.

I'm most happy with leafy greens. Pretty much all kinds except arugula (rocket). Also not a big fan of radicchio. Cabra can have it all.

For accoutrements, I'd go with cucumbers, mushrooms, corn, feta cheese. Sometimes tuna or egg. Oh, and croûtons.

My favourite salad greens are lamb's lettuce (variably and mysteriously also translated as "corn salad", it seems). Feld-/Ackersalat for the Germans.
Best with my dad's special vinaigrette dressing (with curry and garlic), tiny pieces of roasted bacon and croûtons. Mmmhhh..... *wants*

I usually go with vinaigrette for dressing. Very rarely Thousand Island Dressing, kinda like a special treat.

Oh, and I love Caesar's Salad.

Now I want a salad. :(

I don't really like the lettuce but if it's there I'll eat it. I like olives and some kinds of peppers (I'm not sure which type, but if I saw a picture I could probably recognize it), cucumbers, croutons, bacon bits, cheese, and ham pieces. I don't like tomatoes. If I have dressing at all, I use Thousand Island.

MEAT!

I'm a big fan of diced meat salad (Fleischsalat). :D

Or - if it really has to be without meat - then please only green stuff, like field salad, iceberg lettuce, butterhead lettuce, cucumber with oil and/or lemon juice.

And what about potato or pasta salad?!?

Not all together! but some selction of those.... the traditional leafy greens I find dull, or often bitter (I hate rocket!), and don't like cucumber either, so it always takes a bit of effort :P

my salads are usually simple and can include any of the following.

Leafy Greens, spinach, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, radishes, cabbage, meat or seafood of some kind (bacon, ham, turkey, tuna, roast beef, etc), cheese (usually cheddar, american, mozzerella, parmasian or similar), Tofu, and/or sprouts,

Nice question. :)

As for me, much depends on the salad's place in the meal.

If the salad is the meal, then lots of stuff get's piled on. Depending on what's available. Assuming everythings available, a "meal" salad might have various lettuces and other assorted leafy "greens", black and green olives, raw onions, fried onions, carrots, cucumbers, baby corn, broccoli, several cheeses (Cheddar, Jack, Feta, Bleu, etc.), a couple of meats, some crunchy toppings, and a creamy dressing ceaser, ranch, blue cheese, etc.

Iceberg lettuce, spinach leaves, a teensy bit of cabbage, onions, bell peppers, diced eggs, cheddar cheese, topped with either ranch or french dressing.
Dalmatia Cisalpina
28-01-2008, 20:22
I'm pretty minimalist. I prefer spring lettuce blends, but if that's not available, I will go for Romaine. Other than that, tomatoes, low-fat part skim milk mozzerella cheese, and fat-free Italian dressing.
No other vegetables, not because I don't like vegetables, but because I have an arthritic jaw and raw vegetables are hard on it. (It's just not worth the pain, though I love cooked vegetables.)

In my salad goes lots of nice fresh juicy iceberg lettuce, some onions and celery, cucumbers, peppers of all colours (red green yellow I don't discriminate) and a generous dose of ranch dressing (or blue cheese or cucumber dressing if ranch isn't available), I don't like the green lettuce as much but I can deal with it, and spinach is to hard to chew and has a weird texture but a little piece here and there isn't bad

and I almost forgot, not meat on a salad ever for me, if I want meat I'll have it on the side, the exception being mcdonalds chicken salads which I almost never have because who goes to mcdonalds to have a salad (other than my parents)?

I know it's horrible and defeats the purpose of salad, but I like having crispy chicken and honey mustard mixed in with my greens.

I also like this weird noodle-related salad my mom makes. It's got a bunch of different greens, these tiny ring-shaped noodles, chicken, bacon, some bizarre cheese she gets from a Greek man at the deli, and several seasonings which she will not divulge, and which may or may not be people.
