Satellite could plummet to Earth
A space satellite (image: Nasa)
No details of the satellite were given
A "large" US spy satellite has gone out of control and is expected to crash to Earth some time in late February or March, government sources say.

Officials speaking on condition of anonymity said the satellite had lost power and propulsion, and could contain hazardous materials.

The White House said it was monitoring the situation.

A spokesman said "numerous" satellites had come out of orbit and fallen back to Earth harmlessly over the years.

"We are looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite may cause," said Gordon Johndroe, who speaks for the US National Security Council.

Questioned by The Associated Press, he would not be drawn on whether the US would try to destroy the satellite, perhaps with a missile.

"We are looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite may cause," he said.

An unnamed official quoted by AP said the US government was keeping lawmakers and other countries abreast of the situation.

The agency notes that the largest uncontrolled re-entry by a US space agency (NASA) craft was Skylab, a 78-tonne abandoned space station that fell from orbit in 1979.

Its debris dropped harmlessly into the Indian Ocean and across a remote section of western Australia, the US news agency says.

In 2002, officials believe debris from a 7,000-pound (3,175-kg) science satellite hit the Earth's atmosphere and rained down over the Persian Gulf, a few thousand miles from where they first predicted it would crash.

So predict where the Satellite will fall. Will it be an ocean? In a remote area or a town\city?

I think wherever it's fall, the US Military and Government will be there shortly to recover it to make sure no one else get their hands on it.

Odds are excellent none of it will hit the ground. Our atmosphere is thick and satellites are fragile.

Recover what? Besides, anyone interested in recovering a "spy satellite" already knows what it is and how it works anyway. There are methods of gaining access to such information that are not nearly as conspicuous as sitting on a boat in the middle of the ocean hoping for a one in a zillion bullseye.

it's prolly going to land in water.

Buy a bigger, stronger, more attractive house...with VTOL capabilities.

Hmm. Hazardous materials, large satellite, and recovery teams to make sure nobody gets it when normally nobody gives a rats ass where it lands unless it's on their territory.

Possibly nuclear powered, not the first such satellite. Possible that the data inside is extremely valuable, but unlikely they would send a spy satellite up like that without an option to purge databanks in the likelihood of control failure.

Maybe a treaty violating weapons satellite?

Didn't a satelitte fall into the sea at the end of cloverfield?(camera flash from before the attack) Maybe it will awake the real cloverfield monster! (Which is shown Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXASlXuDEDg))

more likely that "hazardous materials" is just to keep people from approaching it. recovery will be needed because of [CENSORED] and [CENSORED] that we don't want [CENSORED] [CENSORED][CENSORED] [CENSORED][CENSORED] [CENSORED] to get their hands on. After all that could reveal [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED]
and [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED] that could prove desasterous to our [CENSORED] and [CENSORED].

This is where the alien bacteria comes from.

So do you think it'll be an invisible and microscopic killer like 'The Andromeda Strain', or do you think it'll be sme sort of macrocellular monster like 'The Blob'?

Pie Technologies to be researched;

Shaped Pie Charges, detonates the fillings in microseconds of impact, creating a conical jet of crust.

Airbursting Pie; fire for effect against massed victims.

File in Pie; for escaping prisons,... not as effective as the legendary file in cake though.

I may be missing something, but isn't this...

Pike also said it's not likely the threat from the satellite could be eliminated by shooting it down with a missile, because that would create debris that would then re-enter the atmosphere and burn up or hit the ground.

... the whole point?

I suspect that there is something in the satellite they don't want to burn up. Like radioactive isotopes. The US has been known to use plutonium as a power source from time to time. Because we care about our children's future. :)

Regarding the satellite, I wonder if we should consider asking China to blow it apart for us.

See, a bunch of little pieces will burn up faster than one big piece. Higher surface area, see.
