Ok, there was nothing else on TV tonight, so I watched the Miss America thing. Over the years, there has been some controversy about it's not being relevant and it's generally deleterious view of women. So there was a lot of hype about it's new, edgy 21st re-imaging for the 2008 Pageant. After watching the cutting edge, re-done show, I can only say, it's time to retire this turkey. It looks like they gave it to the creators of American Idol and Survivor - there was not one shred of class, intelligence, compassion or humanity in this show. I think it's time is over.

I never watched such insipid programs to begin with, so if all Beauty Pageants and so called "Reality" TV shows just disappears tomorrow then I really wouldn't notice.

Now for something truly hilarious. Last night they had a Shop at Home program where they sold Erotica products. To hear them talk about these products is just so funny that I ahh I'm laughing now just thinking about it. I don't know why I find it so funny, I just do.

"You know what I think they should do with the Miss America pageant? I think they ought to make the losers keep coming back until they win. It'll probably get a little creepy after thirty years or so.

Fine. Sit down before you fall down. And pick up all these god damn batons!" -George Carlin

Classic! I knew I could count on you to post that before I did.

On a slightly more serious note (C#), if these pageants are truly about getting young women scholarships and other such advancements, what does any of that have to do with what they look like in swimsuits or gowns? Pageant organizers should be forced to admit that their contests are little more than a capitalistic attempt at suggesting eugenics or have them shut down.

i think the miss american pagent is at about the level it deserves to be now. a minor show on a tiny cable station.

it has some place in modern society since there are still women excited about the program. the prize money doesnt seem to have kept pace with the price of tuition these days though. the winner last night got a $50k scholarship. that doesnt go far in a private university especially at the postgrad level.

im just happy that miss america is no longer seen as the epitome of american womanhood. there are far more lucrative options available to women today than beauty pagents.

I agree completely. There's always that Victoria's Secret fashion show.

exactly.

there are women who look great when scantily clothed--the VS catalog

there are women who look great when all dressed up--the oscars

there are women with undiscovered singing talent--american idol

there are women who can dance--go to the freaking ballet

there are women who can twirl batons--but who the fuck cares?

do we really need a contest that features women who are "pretty good" at all those things? apparently so but at least not no one pretends that the winner is the best the female gender has to offer.

OK. Once we retire American Idol, Survivor, and all the other "reality" shows. Especially the ones that are just game shows.

Edit: Except Last Comic Standing. I love that show. Except the last season. Almost every comic with talent was kicked out in the first few episodes.

How did this edgy re-imagining change it, anyway?

they changed things up a little bit.

the contestants were introduced in other than state by state order.

sometimes they announced losers instead of winners.

they didnt have the creepy voiced lady doing commercials for hair care products.

there may have been more but i didnt watch the whole thing.
