JAKARTA, Indonesia - Former dictator Suharto, an army general who crushed Indonesia's communist movement and pushed aside the country's founding father to usher in 32 years of tough rule that saw up to a million political opponents killed, died Sunday. He was 86.

Suharto, who led a regime widely regarded as one of the 20th century's most brutal and corrupt, has lived a reclusive life in a comfortable villa in downtown Jakarta for the past decade.

I'm curious of the names you gave with him. The only connections between them I can see is United States Support. Is there any other reason you put those names there.

Great man, great man indeed. How else could you escape prosecution and died without any convictions WHILE you lived in the same address.

Now, here's hoping to a more chaotic finger pointing events following Suharto's departure.

From what I hear, he oversaw the rise of Indonesia. It's sad that he died. Indonesia prospered under him and has now fallen.

Well that was sadly a mistake,... that "rise" they all say, were nothing more than a charade, a paper tiger, a husk, a facade. You want facts to prove that,... if it were true, the 1997 Asian economic crisis shouldn't have an effect that would almost cripple the local economy.

Prospered? I'd say SOME hand selected people prospered. Facts? Search for the Berkeley Mafia.

Why do I sound like I have foam in my mouth? *goes to gargle*

I am not wanting to support brutal dictatorships here but what if the Communist took over? Would there have been even more dead? Would the Communist left Indonesia in the same condition as it is today with a growing vibrant economy?

That's like saying the American falling economy shouldn't affect the prospering Canadians...or Europeans.

Hmmm, not really,... in contrast of other members of ASEAN (excluding the Philippines), Indonesia hasn't really recovered from that blow. Of course though, regional economics (and/or stability) has never been the same ever since that time.

Suffice to say, I wonder how your American analogy could fit in (or against) my comment?

PS : Oh yeah, might I add this little tidbit,... Suharto's regime lasted for 32 years from 1966-1998. The economic crash, or the "fall" happened in 1997. ;)

At the expense of democracy? He killed a very large sum of people. Do you know anything about East Timor.
Communism was only evil in the eyes of the US. The big bogey Russia was evil due to it being a dictatorship run by a nut job, not it's communism (which it really wasn't anyway). Good to see the US education system is still manage to teach it's loyal sheep.

Our definition doesn't always mean others definitions. If you were to look at before and after as a judge then I would say it is better.
