a monkey,

impresses his family.
Sorry to lie to you, there is no plot, just a race.
Only some interesting illusions and light displays.

I've thought of a better plot:
Guy makes cars,
Guy has history of violence,
Other guys who try to stop him are in his imagination,
He tries to fight them,
A monkey reveals the truth to him,
Guy gets help,
Monkey tells him this is a lie,
His family are only a part of a conspiracy,
Ends up in an alien space ship,
Fights aliens using amatur martial arts,
loses but impresses the aliens,
becomes an ally of the aliens,
the monkey tries to stop him,
the monkey almost wins,
but was stopped by another alien
guy wins,
aliens are scared off by monkey,
Guy walks into the sunset with some alien food.
End:)

I see they've fallen into the same trap as other comic/game adaption flops: That of attempting to make it look 'cartoony' and comic-like (ie. lots of bright primary colours, 1-Dimensional characters, cheesy dialogue, dreadful overacting). It never works. Have the makers of this not seen the brightly-coloured abortion that was Batman and Robin?

What's sad is that these are the same people who made the Matrix Trilogy as well as V for Vendetta.

The obvious (or so I thought...) difference is that Speed Racer seems to be both well crafted and not taking itself too seriously, unlike just about every other comic/game adaption ever made. I mean, how anyone (I know, not you DH) could compare it to The Fast and the Furious is beyond me, as that movie was nothing but poorly disguised car porn, trying hard and failing harder to be hardcore.

Also, it's the Wachowski brothers that are making this one, and they've proven in the past that they're capable of making good movies. I didn't like the Matrix sequels either, but no matter how bad Speed Racer will be it's still going to be a million times better than anything Uwe Boll or even Paul Anderson is capable of.

The trailer is giving me very different vibes than The Fast and the Furious did, which is one of the few movies I failed to watch all the way through. I really hate that movie.

Spy Kids 3D was basically a movie filmed completely in Green Screen mode (lots of actions, lots of special effects), but no real plot to speak of. It was Eye Candy and that was it.

I guess I will have to learn Korean or Hindi just so I can watch a good movie.
