Okay, I feel like a really bad person.

I broke up with my boyfriend of a year and half this evening. I instigated the breakup, but it still sucks because I wish I could see a way to stay with him.

The therapy I'm off to try is a pint of Haagen-Dazs chocolate ice cream and comedies with a friend of mine who will let me cry on her shoulder. How do you guys cope when you're having a bad day?

Mainly I just either pet and talk to my cat, unload my problem on one of my best friends, or I just play Flight Sim X.

Go out and get him drunk any time you want the sex element, just stay mates for the rest of the time?

Usually it makes me get on with college work, so I just do that whilst listening to Interpol until I feel better.

Sorry to hear about your breakup. And no you are not a bad person. A bad person would dump someone and not think twice about it afterwards. If it was something that you knew you had to do, then you shouldn't kick yourself over it. I really hope you start feeling better soon.

To answer your question, talking to someone always helps me after a crappy day, and it looks like you already have that planned. Other than that, doing anything to get your mind off the problem works well, like ice cream and comedies. Finally, a good nights rest really helps. You wake up refreshed, knowing that it's a new day. If you have nothing you need to do tomorrow, then sleep in.

Again, I'm sorry you had such a shabby experience, and I hope it gets better. Until then, I offer you this Internet hug.

if you "wish [you] could see a way to stay with him" then it means you couldn't see a way to stay with him and still can't. without knowing the details, you probably tried to make the relationship work but it wasn't.

Talking it out with a friend is probably a good thing. the Haagen-Dazs... well, you might regret it in the end (yes, pun intended).

I can't offer any advice. but I too can listen if you want to TG me.

I tend to take a hot bath with smell good stuff and turn on some angsty music really loud and soak until I feel sleepy or have cried so much that I feel better....then I put on clean PJ's and sip hot tea while I wait for my sheets to dry......going to sleep clean, in clean PJ's on clean sheets after a good cry...it's awesome.

don't forget to wash your pillow and pillow case!

... can I add...

if you have a dryer... run your PJ's in the dryer so they're nice and toasty warm just before you put them on. ;)

I was on the other end about two and a half months ago.

Honestly? Music. Finding music that I could relate to and cry to really helped. I called my mom and my best friend daily, just to talk and cry some more. (I live in a different city than my best friend, and 18 hours away from my parents.) At first, I slept a lot just to get through days. Then I started... faking it until I felt it, I guess. I made myself go through the motions, and it got easier.

Bubble baths are always an excellent idea, as are good books if you can manage to focus. Even an old favourite will get your mind off of things for awhile.

I also second the PJs in the dryer thing. So toasty warm and wonderful. Clean sheets are nice, too.

Spend as much time as you can with friends. Watch movies, order pizza, go out for dinner... and then, make sure you have time at the end of the day to just be quiet and alone and cry for a bit, if you need to.

Online break-up sites can help, as you can share the experience with people who know exactly how you feel. Personally, I didn't go that route... but for some people, it might be worth looking.

Baking is also good. ;)

Could be highly entertaining. Most people who try to bake in my residence hall set the fire alarms off -- or at least they did last year. We had someone try to melt caramel on a plastic plate in a microwave, and someone else tried to broil a cake.
There'd be a lot of really annoyed people, but I'd be laughing ...

Masturbation.

But if that's not your thing, yeah, PJs in the dryer, and lots of home-baked chocolate cookies. If you can manage to get one, massages usually get rid of the tension nicely, as well.

Well it was common sense in the 1940s to smoke, nowadays smoking is generally considered bad for your health and unsociable.
So common sense isn't always a good thing.
By the way i don't do drugs either, i don't see the point, they'd be too expensive for me anyway, i don't want to die.

As far as i could possibly take that concept, it comes to having the ferrets crack the eggs (being ovaraptors and all). Also, they're really good at shredding things, so i'm sure that could be used with cheese or something. :p

Similar, though I'm more into Ben and Jerry's chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.

Usually a bad day meal consists of a bag of potato chips, a pint of Ben and Jerry's, maybe a Hershey bar or two and then nausea - that tends to take my mind off my other problems.

Two words: Led. Zeppelin. Those songs are just so awesome, my problems seem smaller and more manageable.

And if I'm really upset, there's Nintendo. A little Super Mario Bros. here and Yoshi's ISland there and I'm all better.

As for your problem, you'll get over it. You'll feel like a good person sooner or later.
