What does your desktop look like?

Well, it's been a while since we had a screenshots thread, and the whole "Linux help" thread made curious of how people have their desktops set up. I'll get the ball rolling (click thumbnails for full size):

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/7021/skrmbildzm4.th.png (http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/7021/skrmbildzm4.png)

That's what it looks like clean: Ubuntu Gutsy (http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/desktopedition) with Compiz Fusion (http://www.compiz-fusion.org/) and Avant Window Navigator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avant_Window_Navigator) (the OS X like dock thingy at the bottom).

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/6039/skrmbild1rv8.th.png (http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/6039/skrmbild1rv8.png)

That's all my four virtual desktops and what they usually look like cluttered. I make heavy use of the Compiz Cube and the Expo mode you can see above to manage the mess (the Expo mode is not just pretty, it lets you manipulate and move the windows across desktops directly).

So, what does your desktop look like? Describe what you show us, please.

This is my desktop, it's Windows so it's fairly self-explanatory and not very fancy, but that's how I like it. The left side has fallen into a bit of disrepair though because I never use it. I never use any of the shortcuts except the game ones really, everything in the middle I open through Start or the quick launch icons on the task-bar.

I wanted it full-size, but it was too big and imageshack wouldn't let me :(

It's a Windows XP SP2 using the Zune desktop theme and with the Mac OS X (Leopard) background.
My work PC desktop is even more cluttered but I don't want to post that one.

EDIT - New background to replace dodgy one

Screenshot of my Mac OS X v.10.5 (Leopard):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v67/aedrais/Picture1.png (Apparently, I fail at posting thumbnails, so I'll just leave you with a link.)

I rarely have icons on my desktop, other than the Mac HD icon and my Pictures folder. When I was still using windows I had MSN, Limewire, and Firefox as desktop icons as well as my pictures folder and the recycle bin. Anything more than five icons and my desktop starts to feel too cluttered - I'm absolutely OCD about my desktop being "tidy".

As for backgrounds, they're almost always black-and-white photographs, usually street photography or scenes from some sort of European city. My favourite background is a photo of a Parisian street, but I needed a change.

Then why all the icons?

I don't really know, I guess because I hardly ever see or use my desktop I don't really care about deleting some of the icons it came with or that I left there when I first got it.

I just deleted a few (all three columns are contained in the sky now), but left the ones I usually get through the start bar just in case one day I remember to do it the quick way :)

It's Windows Vista, using the default Aero theme with a background from the Drowtales (http://www.drowtales.com) webcomic. I try to keep it uncluttered as all those icons that many people have pouring over their desktop tend to drive me mad. Only the programs that I use the most or that are usually buried within the Start menu get the desktop treatment.

Ok, so here are my screenshots.

The first would be Windows Vista on my Desktop.
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/9418/41600955mz1.th.png (http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=41600955mz1.png)
It is a dual head setup which is why it is so wide. I use the same image on both desktops as I really do not use it enough to spend the time finding a 2560x1024 image that can take the division well.

The next image is my laptop.
http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/1438/snapshot1ch4.th.png (http://img113.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snapshot1ch4.png)
It is a combination of Debian unstable and experimental running KDE4. It is a default installation, except I have turned KWin effects on. Its not bad for a x.0.0 release, but it is a x.0.0 release.

I have a Gnome Desktop too, but I am not going to post it. It is rather plain at the moment. It is off a fresh install, so I have yet to bother prettying it up.

My home desktop is the generic Windows background with a few sprase icons.

My work computer has the icons arranged to form my initials, with one of those 3d-rendered images in the background from one of those sites. I can't remember now.

Strangely enough, despite the odd arrangement of icons on my work desktop, I can find every single icon (and there are a lot of them) on command.

1. I could lick and hump that car.
2. You use the "thumbnail for forums" code Imageshack gives you, but replace the url bit of the BBCode with the "direct link" url - that way your thumbnail will link directly to the image instead of an Imageshack page with the image.

I'm hoping to do an exchange to Paris for a semester sometime in the next year or two, so I'll take a few (or a million) then.

Burger Rush... heh. Just a low-budget puzzle game where you match 3 ingredients in a row. It's like Diner Dash but for people who like Tetris knock-offs. I use the older Azureus before it became all bloated. I downloaded it fro, oldapps.com, a good place to find the older version of software. Plus uTorrent doesn't have the encryption options that Azureus has, which I use to avoid having my throughput fucked with because Rogers is run by inept fucktards who would limit my download capacity if it knew what packets were coming through.

When you upload an image via imageshack, it gives you a few outputs. Two are Hotlink for web forums (some forums are case sensitive, so they must include both upper and lower case code). What happens is imageshack both saves your image untouched and creates a thumbnail. The forum code displays the thumbnail while linking to the fullsize. You pretty much have to copy and paste the code it gives you as you will never be able to build the url -- parts are randomly generated.

I am curious as to what you did with gnome-panel. I thought it was not possible to go without a panel with the current Gnome desktop.

It's autohidden at the top and I edited its Gconf settings to make its autohidden size 0 pixels, so it's not visible as that annoying strip. I didn't know it couldn't be removed completely, because I never tried removing it - I have it left for the systray alerts, but I use AWN's own notification daemon to pretty them up and have them display anywhere I want on the screen.

Plus uTorrent doesn't have the encryption options that Azureus has, which I use to avoid having my throughput fucked with because Rogers is run by inept fucktards who would limit my download capacity if it knew what packets were coming through.

I seem to recall µTorrent having an encryption option - you could set it to "enabled" and "forced". Azureus has something better?

Best way to learn a language is to immerse oneself in it, after all. Big Panels are a KDE tradition. I hate them, but certain things are still missing configuration dialouges. The panel is one of them. I'll check ~/.kde4 sometime to see if there is a text file to be hacked.

You are a genious.

Genius, even, but since you've buttered me up I'll tell you how it's done: In Gconf Editor, go to Apps -> Panel -> Toplevels -> top_panel_screen0 -> auto_hide_size. You can also change the values of "hide_delay" and "unhide_delay" to make the panel not have those annoying, well, delays before showing and hiding.

If Fass thinks I'm going to put my desktop up so he can psychoanalyze me, he has another think coming.

Geeky thread. Geeky creator.

You're just afraid to post your swastika background.

I do use them once in a while especially the one which controls power saving as I hiberate the laptop quite a bit.

I'm of the experience that all those are nothing but more obtrusive frontends to what Windows does on its own anyway.

Does quite a good job, I get about 2 hours on battery in power saving mode. Best the laptop can do is about 2.25 hours.

Doesn't sound like considerably more than Windows can accomplish on its own, really.

It's okay. I'm just bored, kept refreshing the page for any replies! :p Ikoner Ikoner... I try to keep it simple but I use so damn many of them so I just put the once I use the most on the desktop while still trying to keep it neat.

I hate icons. I use only the Start Menu to find programs, and I've created a hierachical tree within the Start Menu so no one menu has more than 9 entries (so I usually have to go at least 5 layers deep to find a given application).

It means everything I want is easily locatable using a simple naming convention. Stuff I access regularly I can find in about a second.

I find this much better than icons because Windows insists on rearranging icons whenever I chance my screen resolution (it wants all the icons to fit on the screen all the time), which means the icon I want isn't always in the same spot.

The menu never sorts itself, so I never have that problem.

Well, there's only so much an 6-cell battery can do.
I'd get a better battery but I can't.

It can do about 4 hours if I run it in maximum powersaving uberslow battery mode which I don't since running the Intel T5600 at 1Ghz is slow enough.

My desktop is usually completely covered in icons, but I got rid of some disused ones when I put this background on it so I could see the pic better.

I like everything to be accessible with one click. Hiding away things I use is adding extra work for nothing.

Which is unclean? Or scattered?
Unclean and cluttered! My physical desk would probably give you nightmares...

Not scattered at all, though. I know where everything (that's worth finding) in my mess is. *Other people* would be totally baffled. Which is the point.

Allow me to introduce you and others to a little tool/util I love and use frequently: Iconoid (http://www.sillysot.com/).

http://www.weaselhut.net/images/iconoid.png

It's a smart little programme that I have been using for a long time. If Windows ever tries to rearrange my desktop icons, I simply open this, and tell it to reset my icons to the original places where I put them.

Yeah, but that's huge even for KDE. So, the rumours I hear of 4.0 being not at all complete, but still released for some reason, are trueThe premature release was to get third party developers involved. They provide a suprisingly large portion of what most users expect to be there, so they need to be ready for when KDE4 is ready for inclusion by distributions. In case you where wondering, the default panel is 56 pixels tall.
Thanks.

I think this is more about beta (or alpha even) testing on as many users as possible. There was nothing stopping developers from checking out KDE4 before the release, but now a lot of regular people are doing it who otherwise wouldn't.

One minute they say you shouldn't use KDE 4.0 because it's not ready and the next they say that all the testers/users will help make KDE 4.1 a better product, practically admitting that they intended for this to happen, and that the naming issue was part of the plan. I think the KDE folks handled this extremely poorly.

You must be really bored, eh? Anyhow, because it's you..

I always use some sort of color for the desktop background with some sort of picture in the middle - the current color (vivid green) and the picture (umm.. a cat-like creature) are rather atypical and were installed at the spur of the moment when making a motivational poster for a friend.

The arrangement of the icons, however, is highly typical; I always have the standard Microsoft items (My Computer etc.) in the upper left-hand corner; my music folder(s) and the folder for miscellaneous, rarely-used stuff that would otherwise clutter the desktop below them; my document-y folders in the upper right-hand corner and the few choice documents I'm currently quick-accessing a lot arranged right under the picture.
